Daniel Agger - Sorely missed ?

Here are up-coming fixtures in the league:

v Tottenham
v Everton
v Arsenal
v Blackburn

Now, Sami is still a great defender. Even with his extreme lack of pace, his positioning is superb and he's played well for the most part.

But the combination of Sami and Jamie in terms of possession is like giving the opposition an extra advantage. Perhaps it's a tad harsh, but the amount of times the pair of them hoof the focking ball or just lash it, is ridicilious.

Jamie is looking more and more uncomfortable when he moves forward, and Sami has improved somewhat in that area but non the less Agger is missed in that department.

One of the keys to us moving the ball and keeping possession, is Daniel Agger [the other being Xabi Alonso]. Agger is so comfortable with the ball and his surging runs have helped us build up attacking moves this season.

He's cool and calm on the ball, and we've focking miss that.

Combined with the fact that Xabi is gone as well, and we have had a serious problem of keeping possession in the last several games.

And I'm really worrying about how we're cope with that in our up coming league games.

Rafa's fault TBH. He should have signed a CB (when carra was injured)...

But think Arbeloa might make a decent pacy CB alongside carra (but not sure how is he in the air)....

I agree, Rafa did make a mistake by not buying a CB.

But in order for Arbeloa to be effective in this league as a CB, he needs to put on some serious muscle.

Well...we can always play gerrard as a CB if it really comes to it.

He can just about play anywhere in the pitch apart from a goalie..

I don't think either would be very well suited, mate.  On paper it seems plausible: a DM drops back into a CB berth and brings his defensive skills with him but there would be problems.  Momo, for instance, wouldn't be disciplined enough, IMO, because his instinct is to hunt the ball higher up the pitch.  He'd get dragged all over the shop, leaving huge gaps through the middle.  As for Masch, he's probably too short to play CB for a start and his very best defensive work is done when he's plugging passing lanes further up the pitch or tracking back to win balls from behind.  I have nightmares of him flying out of the back line to cut off a passing lane, only to mis-time it and leave a gap behind.  No problem, right, because he's tops at tracking back?  Well, I've no doubt he'd catch the man up but would probably go to ground trying to slide in and win the ball--a decent enough approach down the touchlines but in this case it would likely happen in the box and would result in a penalty more often than not (as he usually catches some of the player when he goes in for the ball).  Reina might relish the opportunity to enhance his spot kick reputation even further but we'd all be pulling our hair out!  :D

We have definately struggled moving the ball out from defence in Aggers absence. Hyypia seems to have been taking lessons from Riise and more and more balls are just cleared up field rather than to a red shirt. Alonso's absence has compounded this problem as he was the obvious outlet for the defence. Either one of Agger or Alonso missing is not that bad a problem, but both missing has made things much more difficult.

I think we can probably use Arbeloa in the CL midweek but for the league Sami's the man until Agger gets back.

We should have bought a CB as many including myself thought, but we missed out on G.Milito and Heinze, so I think Rafa knew it would be a gamble to start the season without adequate cover, but possibly he saw Hobbs coming through soon and hoped we could manage for this season.

Sami is still a great defender and its not often you see him really struggle due to his lack of pace, and his height and strength are still important assets in the league.

Not sure how good Hobbs is but I hope to see him start alongside Carra in some of the games, probably blend him in slowly during Carling Cup games. Hyypia is a legend but his lack of pace and slow turning can be easily exploited against fast strikers. That's when the LB gotto cover for him and the best candidate to do this would be Arbeloa, with Finnan at RB. I still do not have much confidence with Aurelio's defending. And Riise? Well, he's clumsy and is hopeless at LB - enough said.

I really wanna see Finnan back in action and not left on the Bench, he was #1 defender last season
