Hammers nail Tevez and Mascherano

Pair on way to Upton Park after rejecting number of elite clubs

In one of the most surprising transfer deals ever sealed in English football, West Ham have signed coveted Argentina stars Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano - beating off competition from Manchester United, Arsenal, Bayern Munich and AC Milan. And Portsmouth.
The pair will join the Hammers from Brazilian club Corinthians on a season-long loan but it could become permanent if all parties are happy, though whether West Ham could afford them is unclear, since both carry price tags in excess of £15m.

Tevez broke the news of the transfer on his official website. "Carlitos Tevez - along with his former Corinthians team-mate, Javier Mascherano, has signed - a contract to play with West Ham United of England," read the statement.
The move is nothing short of sensational: never before have two world-class players yet to reach their prime - both are only 22 - rejected a host of elite clubs in order to join a middling one.

It is unquestionably a major coup for Pardew and gives last season's FA Cup runners-up one of the most impressive-looking squads in the Premiership.

With the addition of Tevez, a prolific striker who's capable of being both subtle and barnstorming, Upton Park is now home to one of the most fearsome strikeforces in England. The Argentinian will surely be an automatic first choice, leaving Pardew the luxury of choosing between between Dean Ashton - when he returns to fitness - Bobby Zamora, Marlon Harewood, Carlton Cole and Teddy Sheringham.

Their midfield will also be formidable, with Mascherano, who Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly rated as the world's most worthy recipient of the "new Roy Keane" tag, likely to slot in alongside Reo-Coker, Benayoun and Matthew Etherington.

All of a sudden West Ham look an excellent bet to win this season's Uefa Cup - and have been transformed into genuine contenders for a Champions League spot.

I wonder if this is for real. I had read that Corinthians, the Brazillian club where this pair played last season, got this deal which was financed by a London-based organisation called MSI or something and there were suspicions that Mr. Chelski, Roman Abramovich, is behind this with a view of eventually buying them for Chelski.

This is actually quite good for us since neither Arsenal or Man United will be able to get their hands on those players.

Roman is ofcourse behind this but it will still be fun to enjoy these players in the EPL. Congrats to the hammers.

They just said on SSN that a dutch newspaper has said that PSV are close to signing Kromkamp. This means we surely have a replacement lined up.

I think if a player signs a 5 year contract he has every right to see out that contract or the club can buy out his contract.  If a player doesn’t have that right then whats the point of contracts?  Bogarde was on very good money at Chelsea.  He didn’t ask not to be played, Chelsea made that decision.  Yet he had a contract and was well within his right to see out that contract.  I wouldn’t call it leeching as the clubs give the players the contracts.

I agree, however it would be nice to see more players wanting to play football rather than wanting the money, Diao as much as he is well within his right to run down his contract with Lievrpool has basically sent out a message that he's in football for money.

Yeah true.  :D

he really does need to use his brain, only Houllier is stupid enough to pay him silly amounts of money. No doubt Diao is raking it in and no doubt he's spending it just as fast as well. However if the fool stopped and realised that by staying at Liverpool inorder to collect his money, it will no doubt harm his future prospects when he does eventually leave on a free transfer.

In retrospect, we never really heard Diao comment on being very content without first team football? Did we?

No, but he's happy to reject a decent opportunity to play first team football and earn his money. The fact he's not kicked up a fuss about not getting first team football for three years speaks volumes for me. How anyone who truly loves to play football is happy to be left out the squad week in, week out is beyond me.
