Reds make move for lucas niel - Bid is made

It would be better for us if we don't spend the ridiculous amount Blackburn Rovers are asking for Neill, something like 4 million, and get him to buy out the remainder of his contract so that we can pay him the same amount in signing-on fees and save quite a bit. I'm sure the remaining 12 months of Neill's contract does not come close to the 4 milion Blackburn Rovers are holding out for.

I don't want Alves because he cannot defend. He's a wingback and if Rafa is going to deploy a formation and tactics which support wing backs, then I'd welcome Alves for £6million tops.

As we need a defender Lucas is a great player to have and is another option. He can play anywhere in defence and will give Finnan more pressure to do well, it's a good signing for Neill and us.

Operating in the bottom end of the market isnt a plus.  I know its not all about big names but a club the size of liverpool should be competing for the top talent.

Like we did when we signed Cisse? Maybe we can't afford to compete for the "top talents", has that thought ever crossed your mind? Who says Lucas isn't a top player? It's all about opinions after all is it not? Rafa seems to agree with me on this, so if a manager like Rafa agrees with me, then I'm correct.  :D

By that reckoning Josemi was a top player as Rafa signed him.  I know we cant afford to compete at the top end and thats whats annoying.  Alves to me was a player we wanted to sign and had to try get him on the cheap which is frustrating.  We couldnt get him so now are looking at some average player named Neil.

LIVERPOOL are ready to go back in with an improved offer to land Lucas Neill before the transfer window closes today.

A bid believed to be in the region of £2million has already been rejected by the Australian defender's club, Blackburn Rovers.

But Neill is keen on a move to Anfield despite the best efforts that Rovers will make today to persuade him to stay.

The Lancashire club have made a stuttering start to the season, with the draw against Everton last Wednesday being their only point in three Premiership games, and are reluctant to lose their influential defender.

But they anticipated Liverpool's interest by signing Dutch centre-half Andre Ooijer from PSV Eindhoven last week.

However, Blackburn manager Mark Hughes led his team to Europe last season on the back of a solid defensive unit so is keen to avoid Neill going the same way as Craig Bellamy did earlier in the summer, when the lure of Anfield proved too much to resist.

It is also understood that Rovers are not particularly anxious to cash in on Neill - who will be a free agent at the end of the season - before the end of the August deadline.

The 28-year-old, who first came to England 11 years ago to play for Millwall, can technically buy himself out of his current contract if he insists on making the move. But the negotiations that this would involve are unlikley to be completed before the end of today anyway.

Should Liverpool land their man, the right-sided defensive cover this will give

manager Rafael Benitez is likely to seal Jan Kromkamp's protracted move back to Holland and PSV Eindhoven.

Neill's trademark tough tackling is well known to Liverpool supporters after his reckless lunge at Jamie Carragher in September 2003 broke the Liverpool defender's leg and kept him out for most of that season.

He was shown the red card for the two-footed tackle in that game at Ewood Park and has already been dismissed once this season, on the opening day of the campaign against Portsmouth.

Although most of his time at Rovers has been spent at right-back, he can play in central defence, where he excelled in the World Cup for Australia.

His performances in helping the Aussies reach the knock-out stages have convinced Benitez that he has the quality to improve his options in the back four.

latest from the echo:

Neill on brink Aug 31 2006

By Chris Bascombe , Liverpool Echo

LUCAS NEILL today expected the go-ahead to complete his transfer to Liverpool - as Rafa Benitez considered whether to allow Stephen Warnock to move in the opposite direction.

Blackburn rejected Liverpool's first bid for the 28-year-old Aussie, but negotiations continued overnight with Mark Hughes demanding a fee plus Warnock.

Benitez instantly dismissed that proposal. Warnock is just 24 and a recent England international.

However, as talks progressed today, if a cash deal couldn't be agreed there was a possibility Liverpool would sanction a straight swop for Warnock.

Despite Rovers' reluctance to sell Neill, the mood at Anfield today was optimistic a deal would be thrashed out before midnight.

The Aussie defender has made it clear to his club he's desperate to move.

And despite Blackburn trying to claim as much as £4m for Neill's signature - way beyond Liverpool's valuation - they know they risk receiving nothing if the day passes without agreement.

Neill is entering the last year of his contract and is sure to leave on a Bosman next summer if his move to Liverpool is blocked.

Alternatively, having turned 28, Neill could activate a new FIFA ruling and leave by buying out the remainder of his Ewood Park contract at a cost of £1.2m.

Although that would be a lengthy process, from Blackburn's point of view the final outcome would be the same. They would lose the player for less than Liverpool are prepared to offer now.

Clearly another hectic days was in store for Benitez and chief executive Rick Parry as they tried to overcome the final hurdles.

The club managed to offload two youngsters as Florent Sinama-Pongolle and Neil Mellor joined Recreativo and Preston, respectively. Sinama moved on loan, Mellor signed a three-year-contract.

But there was a setback as Salif Diao's move to Spain collapsed because he couldn't agree personal terms.

Diao was handed a staggeringly lucrative contract when he joined Liverpool in 2002 and would rather earn his money on Merseyside than leave for regular football.

It's highly unlikely he'll move before the end of the day.

Jan Kromkamp, however, is leaving Liverpool to join PSV Eindhoven foraround £2m.

Niell for Warnock  No fookin' way am I happy about that. Yeah, Warnock may struggle for games this season but a straight swop for Niell just isn't good business in my eyes. If we're going to get Neill i wouldn't go above 2.5-3 million. As the echo report says, he can buy out his contract for 1.2m which means it'd work out cheaper for us to pay him that in signing on fees.

How could a knobhead like Diao, who was really a second-stringer at best then, be given such a good contract that he prefers to rot in the reserves and run down his contract? He can hardly be blamed for that because surely after this he would have to accept a stepdown in salary because of his own lack of quality, the blame has to go squarely to the previous management.

I know players only get one career but players like Diao and Bogarde with Chelsea the other season disgust me. They would rather sit on there @rse's doing nothing than leave and earn less money but actually play.
What kind of a half a@sed sh!tty attitude is that ?
Diao has hardly played in 3 years, you think he'd be desperate to play, but no he's happy to sit there counting his money. Diouf was a total c'nt, but he wouldnt of been happy sitting there doing f'ck all.

Diao and Diouf are two of the worst bits of business ever done by the club. 15 million pounds we wasted on these twits. 15 million!? It's fkn unbelievable.

Check this out, people! The Guardian reported that West Ham United, of all clubs, secured a double loan deal for Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano, 2 very highly rated Argentinians, with the option to buy them later. Here's the news:

Hammers nail Tevez and Mascherano

Pair on way to Upton Park after rejecting number of elite clubs

In one of the most surprising transfer deals ever sealed in English football, West Ham have signed coveted Argentina stars Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano - beating off competition from Manchester United, Arsenal, Bayern Munich and AC Milan. And Portsmouth.
The pair will join the Hammers from Brazilian club Corinthians on a season-long loan but it could become permanent if all parties are happy, though whether West Ham could afford them is unclear, since both carry price tags in excess of £15m.

Tevez broke the news of the transfer on his official website. "Carlitos Tevez - along with his former Corinthians team-mate, Javier Mascherano, has signed - a contract to play with West Ham United of England," read the statement.
The move is nothing short of sensational: never before have two world-class players yet to reach their prime - both are only 22 - rejected a host of elite clubs in order to join a middling one.

It is unquestionably a major coup for Pardew and gives last season's FA Cup runners-up one of the most impressive-looking squads in the Premiership.

With the addition of Tevez, a prolific striker who's capable of being both subtle and barnstorming, Upton Park is now home to one of the most fearsome strikeforces in England. The Argentinian will surely be an automatic first choice, leaving Pardew the luxury of choosing between between Dean Ashton - when he returns to fitness - Bobby Zamora, Marlon Harewood, Carlton Cole and Teddy Sheringham.

Their midfield will also be formidable, with Mascherano, who Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly rated as the world's most worthy recipient of the "new Roy Keane" tag, likely to slot in alongside Reo-Coker, Benayoun and Matthew Etherington.

All of a sudden West Ham look an excellent bet to win this season's Uefa Cup - and have been transformed into genuine contenders for a Champions League spot.

I wonder if this is for real. I had read that Corinthians, the Brazillian club where this pair played last season, got this deal which was financed by a London-based organisation called MSI or something and there were suspicions that Mr. Chelski, Roman Abramovich, is behind this with a view of eventually buying them for Chelski.
