We signed Cisse from Auxerre, I'd hardly call that top end business !

You obviously don't know what sarcasm is.

I'm mostly joking here, of course, but does anyone else wonder if Rafa's interest in signing Lucas "Leg Breaker" Neill has anything to do with Chelsea's recent signing of Khalid "The Cannibal" Bhoulerouz?  :D

Personally, I can't wait for Khalid the Cannibal and the whingy-winker Ronaldo to get reaquainted in the Premiership this season.  I bet Ronaldo's thigh still has Bhoulerouz's stud marks imbedded in it!  :D

Yeah probably.

I have a feeling that Ronaldo will steer well clear of Khalid when they meet.

In all seriousness, I must admit that I'm warming to the idea of us signing Neill.  Sure, he suffers from the occasional rush of blood but he seems to work hard and gets stuck in good and proper.  He strikes me as the kind of player that'll get his head down, accept that he lies rather outside the first choice starting 11, work hard in training and in the reserve side and wait for his chance.

His versatility is the real selling point, though.  He'd be sound cover for Finnan at RB and could do a job at CB should bad luck befall Hyypia, Carragher and Agger (Paletta will need some time, IMO).

He's not a world beater but, with the right coaching, he could do a job for us.  I think it would be a shrewd bit of business for 2 mil or so.

Hello Lucas,

how are you? I know you want to follow Craig and come and play for the mighty reds, but registering on the forum is a bit too far mate.

Anyways hope you sign and play well, Carra is gonna get ya though.

Yours faithfully,

Rafadodd

I don't think anybody was watching the world cup on this forum, he was unbelievable, Guus Hiddink said that he was incredible to coach, very professional ... he has had a falling out with the manager over at blackburn as one of my Blackburn supporter friends has advised me from one of their forums.  He is not as good as Finnan and Carra but would offer plenty under Rafael's reign

I've heard that Neil can 'buy-out' the remainder of his contract because he is in the last year and he is over 28.
If that's the case, this move will go through no matter what. If he does 'buy out' his contract, all Liverpool have to do is match that sum as a signing-on fee.

I was thinking exactly the same TBH. He can also play at left back aswell that is another bonus. He's never going to be first choice ahead of finnan. He won't displace carra and sami and he probably won't diplace riise and aurelio but if there was an injury or suspension to any one of our back 4. He could step up. He is a good squad player. I think neil is a better player than Kromkamp but Neil has a reputation of receiving quite a few red cards because of his overly physical approach. He is a good player and I think he would improve our squad.

I hate Lucas Niell. But if Rafa thinks that he's the man for the job (a job that may not exist) then I hope he lands him. If it'll stop him breaking Liverpool players' legs (I think it was him) then let's have him.

Here is a report from Down Under, it suggests that Diao, Kromkamp and more importantly Kewell have been linked to clubs elsewhere.

Check it:

Neill, Kewell link doubtful
From staff writers
August 31, 2006 BLACKBURN Rovers have rejected a Liverpool bid for Australia defender Lucas Neill.

And Socceroo teammate Harry Kewell is one of three players reportedly set to be shipped out of Anfield.

The Reds made an offer this week for Neill, 28, who can play anywhere in the back four, but it has been rejected.

It is understood Blackburn manager Mark Hughes is determined to hold onto the Aussie, who joined Rovers from Millwall in 2001.

Liverpool's move is a surprise given the versatile defender's past record against the Reds.

Neill was involved when Jamie Carragher broke a leg leg three years ago, an incident which led to a furious war of words between former managers Gerard Houllier and Graeme Souness.

"Jamie Carragher was injured at ten past three on Saturday and the apology came 48 hours later - it was absolutely pathetic," Houllier said at the time.

"Maybe Neill is a good footballer but he behaves like a bad gentleman."

Neill was sent off for his challenge in that league match in September 2003, and he was again red-carded against the same opposition in a Cup game a month later.

His signing could coincide with the departure of Kewell who, with Salif Diao and Jan Kromkamp, has been linked with moves elsewhere.

Newly-promoted La Liga club Recreativo Huelva has French striker Florent Sinama-Pongolle from Liverpool overnight.

Simana-Pongolle, 21, signed a one-year deal with an option for another year.

The former youth international joined Liverpool in 2001 but found himself out of favour with manager Rafael Benitez and was loaned to Blackburn for half of last season.
