The main single reason he has to go is because he is in serious danger of undoing what he has done. Players want success and the longer the level of success is not increasing, the greater the risk of them leaving. Take out the likes of Owen and Gerrard and we are in serious sh1t. This is essentially the same team that finished second on 80 points with two notable additions - Kewell and Finnan. With that in mind we should not be struggling to make the final CL place.

That we have signed so many players and still our best XI contains players who have not been signed in the last two seasons SHOULD have every Liverpool fan screaming for Houllier's head. Just look at arguably our best XI

Dudek/Kirkland
Carragher
Hyypia
Henchoz
Finnan - new addition
Kewell - new addition
Gerrard
Hamann
Murphy
Owen
Baros

And how highly do we rate the likes of Biscan, Cheyrou, Diao and Diouf? Any idiot can identify Kewell and Finnan as good players, the team has barely made any progress in the last couple of seasons. If anything the squad is getting weaker, highlighted by a lack of competition for some places

you hit the nail on the head there owzat. that's the most disappointing thing. it's lack of PROGRESS. the team is better but has played worse this season. injuries have been bad i know, but since the new year we've had everyone back and still not improved. the main problem for me is motivation. houllier just can't motivate the players to perform for him. he's just fortunate that when he DESPERATELY needs a result he gets one.

He's fortunate in as much as the people that count - the board - haven't sacked him when they should have. We average 9 defeats a season under Houllier, the least is six in one season. How can that mean we're going to win the Premiership? We're at best a good cup side and we haven't shown that this season. I don't care who we get in anymore just as long as the manager isn't Houllier

the fact is can we really see anything changing?

Arsenal - in stupendous form, still unbeaten in the league, have some of the best players in the world committed to the club (Henry, Viera, Pires, etc), new stadium on the way, recent experience of winning top trophies, already strengthening squad with more young talent.

Man Utd - most financially powerful club in the world, player pulling power second only to Real Madrid, has a squad rife with talent (Scholes, Ferdinand, Van Nistleroy, Ronaldo, etc.), recent experience of winning top trophies, due to spend big in the summer.

Chelsea - Richest owner in the world prepared to put (endless?) money into the club, player pulling power through stupid wages for greedy footballers (Becks & Ronaldo...), prepared to spend big in the summer, current squad full of ridculous talent (Duff, Crespo, Cole, Parker etc. etc. etc.)

On this basis, and on Houllier's record over the last 5 years, does anybody honestly expect him to be able to get even remotely close to the Premiership title?

All things considered, surely it's time for him to go, regardless of 4th place, Old Trafford victory, etc. As he hasn't been able to compete throughout the season with these teams in the past, the future hardly looks promising. New players coming in will most likely need a season to find their feet anyway.

The sad thing is that we have the potential, everyone knows this
Id like to see Houllier resign, not be fred, because hes been a good ambasador for us but its time to move forward. I think everyone would agree that wed wish him well when he left and then we can move on to new and better things

The harsh reality is...unless GH either resigns or moves upstairs then LFC are going nowhere! we cannot progress with this man in charge, he will take us even further away from our aim to bring the title back to anfield. He will waste valuble funds on unproven, and overated players who only he sees as players with "potential" We need a complete clear out and that may include the likes of thommo, and sammy Lee.I have already heard that GH is interested in joey barton!! for christ sake!!...joey bloody barton? if this is GHs idea of bringing in a proven player with the intention of helping gerrard in midfield then god help us!! (here we go again GH knows best eh?) who are we to question..we are only the supporters!!. ???

COme on Ice-MAn! this has got to be the silliest post ever! and i only joined the site 1/2 hour ago! having watched all the Liverpool home games this season from the centeneray stand. I can honestly say that Win or Gain the sacred 4th spot, then Houllier should get the boot anyway. He can make any excuse he likes..............Injuries, blah blah! the basic facts are: if we did get  4th spot and got into champions league, unless we strenghten substantially, we will get murdered in the champions league!! And we are a million miles off winning the league too!
this guy , does not have a clue what hes doing...Ie; playing heskey before Baros, Playing Cheyrou up front with Owen!, Heskey on the wing, NOt singing Anelka, Selling Fowler, MAtteo and Berger!!, Breaking unbeivable LFc records (LOst 1st home game of season at Anfield since 1923,losing six home games...worst run for 50 years, last season, worst league run without a win since 1953, etc etc!) this is the worst liverpool team ever!
If parry cant sack him, he should bugger off too!

I hope he goes but I think we will be stuck with him for at least next season. shame, I'am bored shitless as it is.To give him £30 million to would be a crime. The only hope is for Moores to resign then he will go. It would take not finnishing in the top four, but would it be worth it? not sure! ???

I don't want GH involved with Liverpool FC in any capacity.  He has to go.  Though I am happy with the win at Old Trafford, the performance was cr*p.

Liverpool FC have fired just ONE manager in their history and I hope they don't repeat it with GH ..... I am one of only 2 people who voted "undecided" in the poll. The reason being that if LFC have not done their homework and already have someone lined up to replace him then I fear it would be a bad decision to fire him at this time........ In the 90's I think we were guilty as a club of rushing into appointments that felt right rather than recognizing how the game was changing and we have suffered as a result ever since ......

We've only sacked one manager cos we've only ever NEEDED to sack one. GH needs to go and I hope for his sake he walks before he is pushed so he can leave with his dignity intact.
