Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby tubby » Wed Aug 24, 2005 10:26 am

Michael Owen has confirmed that talks to bring him home to Anfield are at an advanced stage - but he also says that a move to Newcastle has been agreed should Liverpool not get the deal finalised by the end of the transfer window.

Id say were still in with a good chance,

I have a funny feeling something is going to happend in the next 48 hours.

he hasn't signed yet!!!

Baros signed for Villa for 2mill less than Lyon offered!

Just cus they offer, doesn't mean he's going!

Yeah and RM can turn around to Owen and say "We're no accepting LFC's offer", Owen wants football, whats he going to do?

I wouldn't read to much into this. As Poolboy said, RM and Newcastle can agree all the fee's they want, the fact is if Mikey wants to come back here that's all that matter. He's quoted as saying himself he'll only go to Newcastle on a years loan so I wouldn't despair just yet. If RM want rid of him and he only wants to go to Liverpool then we'll get him far cheaper than what Newcastle have offered

Newcastle United have agreed a club record fee with Real Madrid for England striker Michael Owen.

The Magpies are determined to bring the former Liverpool forward to St James' Park even though he has expressed a preference for returning to Anfield.

Owen has indicated he would only join Newcastle on loan but The Magpies have agreed terms with Real, a club they are used to doing business with after selling Jonathan Woodgate to the Spanish giants.

The striker seems certain to move on from the Bernabeu this summer, following crunch talks with Real president Florentino Perez on Tuesday, and he admitted it would likely be a straight fight between Liverpool and Newcastle for his signature.

The England forward suggested his preferred choice was to head to Liverpool, adding he would only consider a loan move to St James' Park in what is a World Cup year.

However, these comments have not deterred Newcastle who have announced they have agreed a club-record fee with Real for the striker.

"Newcastle United have met Real Madrid's asking price and conditions," a statement on the club's website read.

"The agreed fee will be a record transfer fee for Newcastle United.

"It is now up to the player and his advisor."

Much will now depend on whether Magpies chief Graeme Souness can persuade the 25-year-old to pledge his future to Newcastle.

Owen's prowess in front of goal would give Newcastle a huge fillip, as they have yet to replace departed pair Craig Bellamy and Patrick Kluivert and are reliant on Alan Shearer, who is the current club-record signing at £15 million, ploughing a lone furrow in attack.

However, he has indicated that he is not keen on making a permanent switch to the North East and the offer from Tyneside could flush out other interested parties - with Arsenal, Manchester United and Everton all linked with the speedy forward.

First option doesn't mean anything, it can still be refused

i'm not willing to believe that just because Newcastle have offered what seems like > £15m that RM will sell him to them - like the N/c website says it is now up to the player and his advisor.

a year ago we didn't get what we wanted, £8m + Nunez was not the envisaged deal - there may well have been other clubs in for MO then but he wanted RM or nothing else so with 1 year left on his contract we had no option.

this time round if he does not want to go to N/c permanently no one can force him - lets face it why commit now for 4-5 years knowing someone else would have to bid > £15m to resuce you in the future when the club wins nothing and Souness has run it in to the ground?

think this saga is far from over. You also have to question why N/c have bid now, they have had all summer - think they must be worried that Rafa's sniffing round and in with a better chance than they are of paying for MO's ticket back home

I'm still not that keen on an Owen return to be honest, but for those of you who want him back, I still think there's a good chance of it happening.

Newcastle can agree a big fee with Real all they want, but Owen's preferred option is Anfield, even if we offer less money than Newcastle agreed he could still end up here.  Just look at the Baros-Villa-Lyon situation.  People have short memories...

Despite all Rafa's talk, he has still not said directly that he won't sign Owen, which he surely would have by now if he didn't want him.

I would be very surprised if he isn't a Newcastle player in the very near future. Rafa won't go anywhere near the sort of price Newcastle are willing to pay and (as much as i want him back at the club) i wouldn't want us to spend that sort of money (even if we had it.)

The only way i could see him back is on a year long loan deal but Madrid will hold out for the Newcastle money leaving Mikey with no choice but to take the deal or face a season on the bench in World Cup year.

This is why Madrid signed Owen. They spotted a superstar on the cheap with the intention of selling at a profit a year later. It won't kill me to see Owen in a Newcastle shirt, it will hurt but not nearly as bad as seeing him turn out for the mancs, bitters, :censored: or chelski. I still don't think he will save Souness from the chop.
