The fact of the matter is he never failed to score goals for Liverpool regardless who he was partnered with, who says Crouch or Cisse can't fill the role that Heskey played??

If you don't like him thats fine but to make it seem like he was a bad striker just makes you look like you know f.uck all

Read the post. He is not a bad striker, he ia one dimensional striker. He's not in the league of the Henry's. A top striker in the modern game is not the Ian Rush type goal poacher, but has more dimensions.

Henry scores a lot of goals and creates even more. He also holds the ball, carries between the lines, involved in build up play and absorbs pressure. He is a modern striker.

Owen was a great player for us, but he's no Henry, Ronaldo or Schevchenko. And the modern game needs a modern striker. Owen scores goals, but the biggest criticism of him at Madrid is that he doesnt get involved in build up play and hold the ball to get midfielders involved. He just wants to play off the shoulder of defenders. We did that for years at Anfield under Houllier, and how did we go against top teams? Still makes me sick thinking about how outmatched we were against the Arsenals and mancs even in our home league. And in Europe, we were getting knocked out by :censored: teams from Switzerland.

In Rafa's eyes, even Crouch is a better option upfront than Owen because he can at least hold the ball and relieve midfield pressure when we're playing away from home.

I dont like the way Owen left and it wouldnt bother me one bit if he didnt come back.

I disagree with your post to a certain extent because i dont doubt his ability.
The one ability you do need as a striker is to put the ball in the back of the net ,if nothing else.

That is Owens best ability sniffing out goals and thats what you want from a striker.

I agree Strikers are all different, if Owen scores 25 goals all tap ins - who cares the fact of the matter is that he's scored them. Ronaldo, shevchenko, etc are good strikers but different strikers. We've commented before on how the premiership is not a technical and flair orientated league, may have one off players but never will be La Liga. If you want to watch La Liga strikers support Madrid or Barca.

I personally like Owens style of play, yeah he has downsides - which striker doesn't. But you can't tell me moments like watching Michael skin the Arsenal defence alive in an FA Cup final isn't entertaining, no flair just route one.

Liverpools lack of league success under Houllier wasn't Michael Owens fault, it was houlliers.

Completely agree! We've both changed in the last year and he's going to be coming back to a new attacking Liverpool going places. We need to show we can compete with anyone.

yeah we all know owen is no henry, ronaldo or shevchenko, but tell me tel, where would we find a comparable player for less than 50 mil. thats like saying luis garcia isnt good enough because he is not as good as ronaldinho. we all know his game has drawbacks but a strikers task is to.. guess what... strike. vulgar as the spanish press seem to see it

Liverpool may launch a shock move to bring former striker Michael Owen back to Anfield after he admitted interest from Premiership clubs.
Owen may leave Real Madrid in an £11m deal after the Spanish giants signed Robinho and Julio Baptista.
Liverpool had been eliminated from the race for the 25-year-old after paying £7m to sign Southampton's Peter Crouch.
But BBC Sport understands the Reds have not ruled out a deal that would see Owen return after a year in Spain.
It had been thought boss Rafael Benitez had been reluctant to bring Owen back to Anfield, only 12 months after he left in an £8m transfer before playing a competitive game for the Spaniard.
And it is believed several pieces of the Benitez jigsaw would still have to fall into place before the possibility of a dramatic Owen return could become reality.
Benitez's current top priority is a central defender, with Birmingham's Matthew Upson and Deportivo La Coruna's Jorge Andrade on his hit-list.
And Liverpool would then need the cash to finance any Owen deal - with much depending on raking in £7m for Milan Baros and how much they would have to pay for their top defensive target.
But Liverpool are confident of getting their asking price for the 23-year-old Czech striker, who is surplus to requirements.
Everton have not come back to Liverpool with a bid after making an initial inquiry, while Aston Villa have so far refused to go above £6m.
But BBC Sport can reveal Monaco have now entered the race for Baros, and former boss Gerard Houllier retains an interest in taking him to Lyon.
Owen has been linked with Manchester United and Newcastle, with Liverpool very much regarded as the outsiders.
But United have cooled and Owen will show no interest in Newcastle after they were knocked out of the Intertoto Cup by Deportivo La Coruna.
It is understood Owen would jump at the chance to play for Liverpool again, and while it is still regarded as a long shot inside Anfield, the Merseysiders have not - despite suggestions to the contrary - ruled it out.

I would be really disappointed if Rafa turned out to be a big fool signing Owen and going into the season with only two central defenders and without a decent right winger. That is the issue.

We are in desperate need of players in certain positions. We do not need a striker. Case closed.

We need a defender this is true, BUT we also need Michael Owens goals!

Anyway, I can see Zak Whitbred breaking into the first team this year and also Big Djimme can also cover at CB.

Owen will score zillions of goals in the new look LFC.  He scored loads under Houllier who, as I have said before, does not know the meaning of attacking football..
Our job is simple, to support the club, not just parts of the club that are easy to support, but every one who plays a part, that includes ALL players.  We are stronger when we are all walking in the same direction. Walk On

Agree with Banana, we need a centre back and a right midfielder first, we cant hope to compete without cover at the back. We struggled defensively last year, and although there are some options at right mid, we need an ACTUAL right midfielder/winger, someone who will provide width, decent crosses and cover Finnan if he overlaps.
Still i would love Owen back and would hope given some clever work in the transfer market, that we could somehow bring all 3 in.

Well i would love owen to come back and its a possibility that rafa will have an interest in bringing owen back, if we get rid of baros that leaves us with only 3 top strikers, one who is our most important which is cisse, one who is playing very poorly at the moment, morientes and one who is unproven here, crouch os maybe rafa would want to bring owen back if he gets his CB and RM and sells baros then still has the money to get owen

I would like Owen back, but it ain't gonna happen.

How many times does Rafa have to say he's not interested in strikers?  It's not even as if he always plays them in twos.  I'll bet many games this season see a 4-4-1-1, with Luis Garcia/Kewell/others in the hole and only one recognised striker on the pitch.

where did i read that? well i did state BBC sport at the top of my post, its the top story on there.

i think anybody who doesnt want owen are fools, hes guaranteed to score many goals a season, we havent got a goal poacher at the club, no one who will be there to stick them in, real madrid are fools, they stick the striker who had the best goals per game ratio out of all their forwards behind ronaldo, raul who isnt performing and 2 strikers who are top class but arent proven at the top level yet. it sjopws that owen will score many goals  no matter were he is and we would be lucky to get him and we should get him
