Tom Hicks plans for return of his son to Liverpool

• Fans' hate-figure part of bid to keep control of club
• No buyer imminent as owners seek profit on sale

Tom Hicks's last-ditch attempt to retain control of Liverpool is likely to be opposed even more vehemently than previously thought, as the American's proposals are understood to include a plan to restore his son, Tom Hicks Jr, to the Anfield operation. Hicks Jr resigned in January as a director of Liverpool and its parent company, Kop Holdings, after an abusive exchange with a supporter, to whom he retorted in an email: "Blow me :censored: face."

The news that Hicks Sr, co-owner of Liverpool with George Gillett, was in London discussing raising loans to replace Liverpool's £237m bank debts and thereby keep control already alarmed supporters this week. Liverpool's three directors besides Hicks and Gillett – the chairman, Martin Broughton, the managing director, Christian Purslow, and the commercial director, Ian Ayre – are expected to oppose any refinancing of the club's debts presented by Hicks Sr, on more onerous terms than the interest Liverpool currently pay. The revelation that Hicks is planning to bring back his son will further inflame the anger harboured by many Liverpool fans against their club's American owners.

Hicks Sr, whose representative would not confirm any details, was said to be in talks this week with GSO, a division of the private equity firm Blackstone which, according to its website, specialises in debt-based lending to "stressed and distressed securities".

Liverpool's loans, understood to be around £180m owed to the Royal Bank of Scotland and £57m to Wells Fargo, are due to be repaid next month, although later than 6 October, which has generally been understood to be deadline day. Broughton has been trying to sell the club, which would see the loans repaid in full, but his hoped-for target date of the end of August has passed and no deal is realistically on the horizon.

The sudden spectre of Hicks obtaining an offer of new finance from GSO or another lender, to replace the loans from RBS and Wells Fargo at more burdensome interest rates, is expected to be opposed by the board majority. The three directors are likely to argue it would place the club in a worse financial position, and therefore not be in its best interests. Broughton, Purslow and Ayre are understood to have blocked another proposed refinancing presented by Hicks in June, and obtained advice from the City law firm Slaughter and May that they had legal authority to do so. Observers of the process believe Hicks's discussions are an effort to retain control of Liverpool before RBS's loans expire, and are unlikely to deliver a better deal for the club.

Hicks and Gillett promised to usher Liverpool to a more prosperous future when they took over in February 2007, saying theirs was not a "Glazer-style" debt-laden deal, and they would build the club the long-planned new stadium on neighbouring Stanley Park. It soon became clear the £185m they borrowed to buy Liverpool was indeed being made the club's responsibility to repay, and the stadium project has not even been started. As Liverpool's cherished status in English football slides, Anfield supporters have become increasingly vociferous in their campaign for Hicks and Gillett to go.

Broughton is said to have been unable to find a buyer so far because Gillett and particularly Hicks are seeking a large profit personally on the £185m cost of buying the club. A new buyer will have to pay the £237m debts in full, so a major profit to Hicks and Gillett – the figure of $600m (£390m) has been cited – makes a purchase hugely expensive, with the stadium, possibly costing £450m, to build as well.

The difficulty of finding a buyer while Hicks and Gillett can set the price, and the likelihood that any refinancing will be blocked by the other three board members, means the spotlight is turning on what RBS will do if its loans are still outstanding at the October repayment deadline. The bank, which collapsed in the financial crisis and is 84% owned by the British taxpayer, has always stressed it does not want to take control of Liverpool. It may instead offer to renew the loans, but with conditions attached requiring Hicks and Gillett to sell above a certain defined price.

All of which, as Liverpool prepare for their momentous visit to face Manchester United at Old Trafford tomorrow, depicts a club a very long way from healthy.

How can this clown think he will ever get £600 million for the club? Refinancing (should he manage it) will no doubt add another £30-50 mill to the debt straight away, next years end of year profits will be horrendous compared to previous years dues to lack of Champ League, add another potential season out of the top 4 and the inevitable loss of our best players and we'll be in admin in two years if not less  :(

I just hope the media are as wide of the mark with this as they were with the (now seemingly) ridiculous idea that the club was actually gonna get sold.

Im hopeful. The press relish stories like these as it attracts more people to the websites and the like. All I have seen so far are opinions of journalists, nothing concrete.

Regarding hicks, what a miserable excuse for a human being. He absolutely does not care what he does to so many people as long as he gets his way. He is a kind of sadist who gets kicks out of making peoples lives miserable. What a horrible little man.

If he does pull it off I hope the dumb fat f..u..c..k isn't stupid enough to think he can go the game ever again.

I don't know what's being planned in terms of protests but hope it gets sorted pretty quick. Tomorrow's match really doesn't seem to matter at all anymore. I'm all for a protest from within the ground. It might not do any good but at least it would get this thing a few more column inches and show the :censored: he can't (even though he is) take the pi..s..s out of LFC the way he has the fans (of his various doomed franchises) in America. I got me ticket for Blackpool and am up for whatever protest might be planned.

For a start, how about the people decide whether boycotting the game or protesting during it would do more good (if either does) ?

Not sure either does any real good if he really is about to sew up this refinancing deal mate. More a case of not going down without a fight I guess. For me, a protest within the ground would have FAR more impact (from a media and impact) perspective than a boycott of the match. Let's be honest, a few thousand refusing to leave the ground at the end is far more noticeable than a few thousand staying away + you would also hope to entice others to follow the lead if a protest takes place from within the ground.

:nod  Totally agree with that..

Now take the dam.n kids with ya and tell them to be loud as fck in protesting.. What better than a loud anfield with supporters united in protest as an experience for the kids... They might also learn a new word or two  :lookaround

Lets not forget, they also own american sports franchise. Money talks. OK, not attending games will have a clear message for people like hicks, but I doubt it will bother him. Abandon  a couple of games, I get the impression he wont care, he will just up the price of tickets and give free tickets to potential investors  or shareholders.

Its not a question of waking up, its a question of faith in hoping to high heaven that those who can stop hicks, will do.

A protest in the ground is a better bet I think dude simply coz you will struggle to get the 'boycott the game message' to the out of town fans, then fans that don't use internet forums, the fans who are flying over from Europe and the fans who only attend once or twice a season and have had their ticket in the bag for a while. they will be going going the game no matter what. You make a bigger splash by doing something in the ground, at least initially anyway.

We should wait and see though before stressing ourselves out. All we have is press reports. And these I take with a pinch of salt. A lot is being done behind the scenes that we dont know about, unsung heroes representing us. Adopt the wait and see attitude. Its healthier.

These reports are coming from the likes of Chris Bascombe from the NOTW who told us in November 2007 that Benitez would definitely be sacked over his outburst just before the Newcastle game against the owners.
