He isn't anyone's first choice to replace Torres (neither is N'gog), but we've got no-one else so it make sense for Roy to talk him up and give him a bit of confidence. And if he takes chances like he did the other day, maybe, just maybe he'll be the player we thought we were getting all those years ago?!

Grasping at straws?

Oh well...

grasping at straws is exactly what you're doing :p

I'm so skeptical to him in general.  He just hasn't proved in the games he has played that he can do anything.  He scored in the Europa league, after his 3rd good opportunity as well as 6 bad passes in a row before that and a triple hand ball.  It's the Europa league and he's not good enough there, he will need to really improve to get anywhere near where he wants to be or where we want him to be.

So Roy is right to talk him up and give his confidence a boost.

And no doubt in a year's time Roy will be right to sell him and buy someone of real quality.

But in the meantime, I'll keep grasping at straws (the straws are what keep me getting up in the middle of the night to watch the Europa League!)

Haha.

Exactly. If we play Babel and get somewhat decent performances out of him, we may be able to sell him for a bit more or trade him for a good player/+cash

why sell a player when he is finally putting in some decent performances as you have hypothetically mentioned?

We should be looking at playing 4-3-3 this season for me.
This would suit Babel and Kuyt i think.
We dont have any actual wingers for me. The likes of Cole, Jovanovic, Kuyt and Babel are all attacking players but more suited to being either side of a 3 man attack.
It's what Babel and Kuyt are used to with the dutch national side anyway.
If i had to pick a team to start a must win match it would be this :-

                             Reina

Johnson       Carra          Agger         Aurelio (if fit)Konchesky otherwise

                   Poulsen  Meireles

                          Gerrard

            Kuyt                         Cole

                            Torres

That would leave the likes of jovanovic and Babel as subs for the wide attacking roles.

The opposition will rape us from the wings. You don't play 433 with 2 defensive midfield positions...

Chelsea use the same formation against every team and rape almost everyone. But then they have the right personnel to do the job.

No mate, there is an inherent flaw with that formation... i.e. it is too narrow and the middle is too crowded. With 2 midfielders as DM's the formation doesn't allow us any advantage breaking through the middle as well. The strong point with a 4-5-1 or 4-2-3-1 is that it has width and it is also strong in the middle. You need to have a strong CF who can lead the line alone though, which we have with Torres. That's why the 4-5-1 was so popular in the WC especially used affectively by Germany. Their attacking players the '3' in 4-2-3-1 are very dynamic, Muller, Podolski and Oesil. Among the '2' Schweinsteiger has good passing range a la Alonso. And their lone striker Klose can lead the line because he is good in the air and carries a goal threat. With the above formation we will be demolished by those who's playing 4-5-1, even 4-4-2.

Chelsea use this 'flawed' formation you just mentioned against every team and rape almost everyone. But then they have the right personnel to do the job.
