Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Dundalk » Mon Dec 07, 2009 11:17 am

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is hoping negotiations over a new contract for goalkeeper Pepe Reina can be wrapped up over the coming months.

The Reds boss revealed over the weekend that the club had begun talks over a new contract for Javier Mascherano, with Benitez also keen to tie down the Spanish stopper.

"We are very happy with him," Benitez said. "He has been improving every single year and he will improve more because goalkeepers have more time in their career.

"He's always positive and he's one of the best in the training sessions because his attitude is always good.

"It depends on the agent and what the player wants but Pepe is very happy here in Liverpool so I don't see a big problem.

"The team-mates love him because he's a very good example."

Made up . well in Pepe lad

From LFC Weekly Magazine.

"I can see in the city - just walking in the streets and talking to people - that there is a passion which cannot be matched in other cities in this country and around the world.

"I realise just how lucky I am to represent this club. I couldn't be happier here. My family is well settled down and my children especially feel like Liverpool is home.

"On the football side, I am 27-years-old and have many games behind me. Mentally, I feel ready to take on anything because my experiences - especially at Liverpool - have made me a lot stronger person and professional. Right now, I am at one of the best moments of my career.

"I would like to stay here a long, long time - I am certain about that. I couldn't imagine playing for another club and pulling on another shirt. The club knows how I feel about this, so hopefully there will be some developments soon. I am ready to talk."

Pepe Reina, Shay Given ----> all other goal keepers. Fact!

Most people seem to forget the value of Reina also. The media always banging on about how we've only two world class players, but are they forgetting Pepe? How much is he worth in the transfer market now?

Since Pepe wants a new contract (even though he still has 2 years left to run on his present one)
I say we sign him up till he retires
I remember how frustrated I was when when David James would make a horrendous boo boo out of the blue
And now that we have one of the most charismatic and capable keeper between the sticks since good old Grobbelar,
We should offer him a contract that will ensure that he sees out his career with us
The only True Reds in england...........

totally agree yolz, reina is an amazing keeper, its not just how many clean sheets he gets, its how he interacts with the fans as well, how he celebrates when we score etc.

if it wasnt for reina this season, turning possible defeats into draws or draws into wins(although not many), we would be a lot lower than 7th thats for sure.

reina is without a doubt our player of the season.

Legend , him and johnson have been arguably our best players this season. Pepe's got an immense character and everybody just seems to like him . Best goal keeper in the prem and possibly top 3 in the world , even than i wouldn't swap him given a choice

Penalty specialist as well, I won't forget the time he won us the F.A cup in penalties and the time he took us to AC Milan final in athens when we beat Chelsea in penos as well.

Top player.

Great statements from Pepe there, well in lad.

Not only have we got one of the best keepers in the business, dont underestimate his influence in the dressing room.
You can see he is one of the majot characters, and every club needs people like him around.

Love the fella.

I think that Reina getting the contract of his life in this club is one of the very few consensus we could reach in newkit.

I would be made up if he eventually signs a new contract, and it would be a great relief if it was done now, in dark times for the club.

I'm a bit worried that he uses the expression I'm ready to talk. Normally  a player says that in two situations, when a player wants desperately to remain at the club and isn't sure about the interest being mutual, or when a player has let the club know his new improved contract conditions to remain at the club and the club hasn't answered.

For some reason it sounds as the latter, and that worries me.

Reina deserves a big jump in his pay..... He has been one of the best players at our club.

Can't say the same about the others who got a big-long term deal (Kuyt..the backroom staff......manager :p)
