I'd be surprised if he wasn't John TBH. He came from Madrid where he will have been on a good contract, he is a proven international and my suspicion is that Liverpool probably wasn't his first choice destination.
His agent would have known that the likes of Gerrard were on 90k, Kewell 70k etc etc and I just think it's extremely unlikely that he would have come for much less. The amount of money swimming around really is obscene and if it is less than 60, it won't be by much that's for certain.
As a footnote there was an excellent interview with Joey Barton in one of the qualities this week where he talked of the misconception amongst the press of how salaries are made up in football. He was reputedly offered £29000 per week by Man City. He was at pains to point out that this wasn't the case. Apparantly he gets £20000 basic, £5000 if he actually plays and £3750 if they win. The £5000 and £3750 are paid to every member of a winning team. Still not bad if youa sk me lol.
Given that Joey Barton is able to earn £30k playing for Man City (FWIW I believe every word of what he says) then for sure Morientes would ask for considerably more to play for Liverpool.

Ciggy says 6.5 million over 4 years which is about 30-odd grand a week.  But I just wonder about the source, sometimes the way these things are written is confusing - that could have meant 'signed for 6.5 million (transfer fee) for 4 years'.

I hear what you're saying Mick, but I can't believe he'd be on anything near 60 a week to be honest.  He moved in January, and players don't normally move mid-season unless they're unhappy - which he undoubtedly was at Madrid.  I don't think he'd have been overly fussy about contracts, he just wanted out of there.  If I remember correctly the only other serious offers for him came from France and a lower table Spanish club, so I'm sure we would have been his first choice.

The Barton story there is interesting, just highlights that half the things you hear in the press regarding contracts are garbage.  The bonus breakdown is also interesting.  Makes you wonder if Morientes gets bonus payments for shooting directly at the keeper, he's certainly mastered it.

Well it's only a guess from me on the wages John so it could be anything. Despite the fact that wages are a contentious subject for fans, in truth whether he is on 60k a week or 30k doesn't make that much difference in the overall scheme of Liverpool football club. The turnover of a major club is such that it can absorb such anomilies, hence the cash that slushes around in bungs and backhanders.
I was talking to a fella this week who's son was a coach/asst manager at a football league club until recently. The manager got sacked so the coaching staff resigned, knowing there would be a bullet with their name on it around the corner. Consequently, the manager has a chat with Dodgy chairman and gets reinstated. Needless to say, coaching staff (in the case of this fellas son, ex team-mate) don't get taken back on. This particular pairing had been together for a couple of clubs. When the manager, (who was then a player with vast-experience) was on the books of a Championship team with the other lad in situ as a coach, he was on  a pay as you play contract. That is to say, if he played he got paid (2k per week if you're interested). Mind you, he played every week because the mgr was apparantly on a cut to make sure he took plart in some capacity or other in every game. Football is rife with it.
Needless to say the above has nothing to do with Liverpool or Fernando Morientes, I mention it for two reasons. Firstly because it is an illustration of the cashflow through football, and secondly because it's an intrigueing story.

sadly i think it's curtains for morientes, if he was going to come good in the premiership then surely we would've seen more by now, he's been here well over a year and apart from the very occasional touch of class he's still done bugger all. he just seems like he has no appetite for the game any more

as for what rafa thinks of him, well who knows. he obviously likes the guy but rafa isn't the kind of bloke to let friendship get in the way of the club's progress so it'll be interesting to see what approach he takes at the end of the season.

as for the salaries issue i'm half way through fowler's autobiography and he's just been talking about how most players are on nowhere near the daft salaries that the press harp on about, and coming from fowler i'm inclined to believe it

its all about the sponsorship as well now, plus lump sums when they are signed. There is so much dodgyness in football its unreal. No one is on what they say. Take Darren Bent. i bet his basic is a lot less than people think but with the goals bonus he is probably n a fair decent whack.

Will morientez go? i dunno. maybe he will stay on a pay as u play contract. He doesnt need the money and if he truly wants the chance then he has to earn it first. Perfect world situation eh?

Interesting stuff Mick.  It just seems strange to me that even the dogs on the street know that the financial side of the game is corrupt, yet nothing gets done about it.

It puzzled me that Hasselbaink's claims recently that Chelsea made illegal payments to players has now seemingly been brushed under the carpet.  He might be a moody git, but surely Hasselbaink wouldn't have made those claims if there wasn't something in it - because otherwise he'd get punished himself for making false claims.

As it happens, no action has been taken against Chelsea or Hasselbaink as far as I've heard (which I find bizarre).  If there had been a proper investigation then surely one of the two would have been punished?  It stinks of foul play.

Fernando Morientes has completed his £6.3m move to Liverpool after earlier passing a medical examination.

Nah I dont, I know this is going off topic a bit but I dont think its wrong a player gets paid more. For starters what happens when a player has to retire early or even retire during his mid 30's. Where does his income come from for the next 20 years or so. At least the manager has an income right up until he retires, maybe into his sixties.

Plus the manager isnt the one who has to keep in tip top shape, watch his weight . Also at the end of the day its the players more so than the manager who wins the games and cups.

Back to Nando, I know people say he has been here for long enough to settle down and show some decent form. For some players it can take a lot longer to settle down and get accustomed to the hustle and bustle with the premiership.
Especially a player like Nando who technicly is top notch but physically and maybe mentally hasnt been able to pickup the pace.
I think he has it in him to turn things around, but unfortunately I doubt if he has the time.

IMO i think we should offload him as he isn't scoring enough goals for us,  If we could get 4mill for him i think that would be good business. We will probably move for defoe in the summer and i can see him and crouch working well together in future games, so i can't see a starting place for nando!!!  I hate to say this as he has been one of the great spanish players, but he is not doing it for us and we cannot afford to keep strikers that are not scoring the goals for us.  BRING BACK OWEN!!!!!!
