Just got back. Really good result and all round decent performance. First half we were cruising and could easily have been 4 up and apart from a ten minute spell in the second half we were completely in control.

The atmosphere was an utter embarassment though. Too many "fans" just don't WANT to sing. It's that simple.

your right about the atmosphere, they only seem able to muster one on a european night and even they are going downhill aswell.

i cant get my head around people going and not getting behind the team, it in no way stops you watching the action, its a shame its come to this and a little embarrassing when you here people on TV talk about it then sample it as it is today and most match days.

:(

anyway on a more positive note well done to the lads today, portsmouth have proven to be a tough nut this year but as usual it wont be down to how well we played but how poor pompey where.

just checked the running order for motd, where on 2nd, arsenal 1st

Who made the run that led to our third goal?

Babel.

Who did Babel replace?

Benayoun.

There's your answer.

Just got up.... Have an absolute stinker of a hangover..... Had a little too much after we won last night! :buttrock

Thought we played really well. Babel looked good when he came on. I'm starting to come round to the idea of him partnering Torres in the long run. Man of the Match was Masch easily in my opinion. He had a blinder.

Feeling fabulous despite the hangover. :D

Well it's not overly surprising that it goes a bit quiet after a performance like that. We pick a sensible team, a sensible formation and prove that we're much better than Portsmouth. Possibly the reason why other matches, and the one previously in the season where we played the same opposition springs to mind seem to generate more comment, is that there are many more things to debate.

As people will remember, there we played a team which bore very little resemblance to the one which took the field today and were fortunate to escape with a point. St Michael has posted up in the rotation thread that back five apart, only one of the other six who played at Anfield played at Pompey.

That was the starting point for our "blip" during which we lost all momentum, losing two games in the Champions League into the process and necessetating the practical sacrifice of three points at Reading as we started with an odd team, and then took off our best players so they would be fit for Marseilles. We've kept EXACTLY the same team in our last three games (excepting the Carling Cup). Why, oh why didn't we resort to this tactic much earlier? It is the failure so to do that has cost us the chance of winning the Premiership this season in my view.

That said, I have been saying for a while that for me this should be the last season of "Rafa syle". We've had four goes at it now trying to prove it is possible, and if this season confirms that you can't challenge for the title by "Rafa-styling" and the manager refuses to change tack, we should look for somebody else. If however, we are going to start sticking to the same team in three matches running and generally getting more conventional, then that changes the whole equation for me. It'll be very interesting to see how the selection process goes from now on, I expect a couple of "restings", using a few "options" against Derby, but I'll be interested in seeing the team after that.
