Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has explained his decision to re-sign Fabio Aurelio.
Having previously failed to agree a pay-as-you-play contract, the defender left Anfield earlier this summer but has now penned a two-year deal and is understood to have taken a pay cut to return to his former employers.
Hodgson, who had considered a move for the left-back prior to leaving his post at Fulham, invited Aurelio back to Liverpool's Melwood training ground to be assessed by both his backroom staff and the club's medical team before offering the Brazilian, 30, a new deal.
He said: "I asked the club to find out whether Fabio had found a new club.
"When we ascertained that he hadn't, we invited him back to Melwood so both myself and my staff, and the medical team could properly assess the player.
"We were both very impressed and I am delighted we were able to re-sign Fabio."
