Erm, if all LBs were in "top form" I think I'd have to take Evra and probably one or two others over Aurelio - Warnock and Clichy to name two others immediately spring to mind

Don't get me wrong, when fit and playing well he was a good enough LB, but I'd say he's far from the best LB around and I doubt he'd make many (neutral) top fives

I can go along with Evra definately. But personally i would have a fit and firing Aurelio over Warnock by a mile and also just over Clichy who is a good player but doesnt score goals and i dont think his crossing is anywhere near the level of Fabios. Also Clichy looks like he is wearing a gumsghield which is annoying  :D

No he was free.

And i disagree, on form and fit he was a key player.
like andy said underrated.
It was just a shame that as soon as he appeared to be hitting form he got another injury.

he wasn't free, because he had already signed a bosman deal with another club before Rafa went to sign him from Valencia.

If my memory serves me right, we paid 3 million to the club he had signed a contract with. It might have been PSG.

even back then Rafa was making transfer gaffs.

Did the tooth fairy tell you that?

Aurelio was free - like it or lump it.

We may have technically got him on a Bosman, but only after we had paid 3 million for another club to tear up a contract they had already agreed with him.

FACT

Show me the evidence.

I stick by my decision. The main reason neutrals wouldn't pick him is because they hardly saw him play. Keep in mind the fact that we only ever really saw him in the aftermath of an injury - had he played a full season, I am confident peoples' opinions of him would be different.

Aurelio, injury free, was one of our best defenders. When he had a run of games he was consistent and offered a lot to the team. However it comes down to the injuries. We are losing too many talented players to bloody injuries, hopefully though new measures put in place will help us keep players like Gerrard and Torres on the pitch longer in more games.

It will be interesting to see how he gets on with another club and if he picks up injuries with them. Then we can get an idea if its the clubs training program or the players themself. Look at Kewell for instance.

The reality is, our players are amongst the fittest in the league. When your body is at its peak, it only takes a small problem to result in an injury.

They need to find the balance, which is where the Oz Dr comes in.

With that being said, how can you say he's the best left back in the league then?

it was public knowledge at the time when we signed him, because the club in question threatened to take us to court because they said they already had an agreement to sign him. I'm pretty sure it was Paris St German...

Anywho, its true, but i can't be bothered to look back so many years to find the report. The gaff was pushed to one side by the IN RAFA WE TRUST hysteria at the time…but we were forced to pay a club 3 million quid.

sad to see him go tbh.
at 31 he still has 2 or 3 good seasons left in him providing he stays injury free.
i can understand his reasons for not accepting a pay as you play deal as imo it would be a sad day for a pro to accept it and would surely send out signs that he's finished.either way, if fit he couldnt be guranteed he'd play regular enough.
i think the club could have given him a better deal with a clause that if his injurys persist and they are'nt happy they could terminate his contract with mutual consent and no penalty.
in light of the way things are being run at our club at the moment, i wouldnt be surprised if this is another bad decision and should he go on to shine for another club we will end up with egg on our faces.
i doubt he was looking for a lucrative contract and would have taken a 2 year deal with something like the above mentioned clause instead we offer him a deal showing absolutely no confidence in him.!!.

anyway the lad was a true red.
all the best FAB cos when fit that's exactly what you were!!
