as far as rodgers and ayre were concerned reina was off, they`d heard it from the horses mouth (or at least his agents) and lets face it the only reason reina didnt go was because valdes`s situation changed down the line.
rodgers couldnt afford to wait and see what barcelona were going to do, if barca bid for reina with a week or even a few days left in the window we could have been going into next season with jones as our number 1 keeper.
imo it`s about time the club started being pro active and dictating situations instead of scrambling around trying to pick up the pieces after barca and real madrid.

As for the loan, I think it's somewhat logical.
About a month ago, Reina was ready to leave for Barcelona. We had to act quickly and sign a suitable replacement while it was still available, so we bought Mignolet before we could sell Reina. However, Valdes decided to stay with Barcelona for another season so Reina had no choice but to stay with us (at least until Barca came looking for him again next summer). So now, we're stuck with two world class goalies, but Reina is going to leave next season anyway, so we might as well start using Mignolet as our number one keeper starting with this season. We can't keep a goalie like Reina on the bench though, even if it's just for one season, so a loan to another club is the most reasonable thing to do. Considering the whole situation, I think it would be best for everyone if we loaned him, as long as we don't pay for his wages.

If it was an outright sale that saved us the wages and gave us a good return it would't be so bad but for the loss of our best keeper, one of our most experienced players and a character in the dressing room, we save probably a few million quid in wages. It also means a loss of competition for Mignolet and the chance for him to learn from one of the best in the business. Not the best situation. 

I'm not nexessarily going to blame the club, though. If you don't have an acceptable offer to buy, you don't sell, and if a CL club managed by a former manager held in high regard by the player under offer comes in for him, albeit on loan, you have to think about whether it's in our interests to be denying him that opportunity.

do what they did with suarez's agent, tell him to go and find interested clubs to pay what we want and then we will consider it. his agent told us to expect a bid weeks ago and we havent replaced him yet.
reinas wages were his problem and thats why mignolet was signed. the club knows he would not sit on the bench for us and they were so desperate to get rid that they let him go on loan.
he has left now with over 4 weeks to go in the window so thats more than enough time to get a replacement and id bet mignolet would have still been at sunderland.

reina has wanted out for a few years mate, he said in his book he wanted to sign for arsenal but the move broke down at the last minute and now it`s barcelona, i think the club (especially when they were told by reina`s agent that barca were going to bid for him before the summer was out and reina wanted to go) did the right thing, we brought in a keeper that really wants to be here.
last season was reina`s first decent season in 3 years and even then he made plenty of howlers early on (like the one against hearts).

we have been hearing stories since christmas that we would save 3.5mil alone on wages if reina left in the summer and that was the main motivation in any deal. maybe he would have jumped ship if barca did come as many would but they never did or even enquired. yes mignolet is a good signing but we would have been stronger with both and i thought that was the idea of strenghtening us.
no wonder mignolet was so confident in being no 1 this season

realistically there was no way either reina or mingolet were going to be prepared to sit on the bench for at least half a season, especially in a world cup year.
and lets face it if the two of them were here for next season rodgers would have to be a right divvy not to play mingolet in the vast majority of the games knowing that reina would just be basically killing time here until valdes`s contract runs out at barca.
thats all pepe is doing at napoli, just killing time until he can get his dream move back to the club where it all started for him.
both mingolet and pepe are excellent keepers but the nuts and bolts of it is in their heart of hearts one wants to be at LFC and the other wants to be somewhere else, we are going with the one that wants to be here.

Not sure what to make of this loan arrangement...I don't know why he wouldn't be sold and we get £7m - £10m for him!!!

Is Rafa trying to help us out by taking Reina off the wage bill (or majority of his wages)?
Does this show Rafa's position at Napoli will be judged on this season only and for that reason he has only signed his 'friend' Reina on loan rather than commit him longer term only for Rafa to be given the bullet after one season (if it's not a success)?

Reina wants to be number one at Barca. He can't be that this season.

Reina wants to be number one here. Because we signed a replacement there is no guarantee of that which could scupper his dream move this time next year.

The club do not want to pay top wages for a number two. We already have a suitable number 2 who is content.

Best solution. Season long loan. The players wages are paid. He gets first team football and the chance to go to Barca next year. Playing first team football will keep his value up so we won't miss out.

For me sensible business. Although I will miss him and see him as our best keeper since Grob, maybe even clemance.

Called it as soon as we bought Mignolet. Anyone believing we would stump up 9 million on a keeper to up the competition with Reina was seriously deluded.
The big problem was that we bought Mignolet 1st meaing everyone would know that we really wanted to get rid of Reina. That wage sitting on the bench was just not an option
which meant any club out the could lowball us like no tomorrow.

Same thing would happen if like for example we bought Higuain tomorrow for 35 million. Even if it isn't exacly the same thing every club out the would we are looking to sell Suarez as I don't believe for a second the club would spend that money
and not looking to balance the books with the owners we currently have.

Napoli saw their chance and credit to them for getting an excellent keeper for a season. We get nothing in return but save a few million in wages and getting at most 5 million next season.
