Some dutch guy was just on SSN talking about how Kuyt would prefer Liverpool over Newcastle because of its history and that the fee was around £5 million. That seems a bit cheap compared to the other numbers that have been talked about.

On some other thread....i read that liverpool's start of last season is what cost them the title.... befor the chelsea game we lost (4-1) we had 7 points while chelsea had 21  ! after that game, we went on to collect 75 points while chelsea only manager 67 ! that was the time where Crouch couldnt manage to get on the scoresheet ! if we get a good striker.. start him and he melds well with the squad we got.... can see us mounting a serious title challenge !
High hopes on Kuyt...hope he can liveup to all the hype !
Personally, i thought he was a player that we'd sign and play him for some time before getting the best of him ! not quite what we need at the moment but still looks a good signing in a vital time ! if he signs that is....hope he does !

Rafa didnt help Crouch at the start of his Liverpool career, playing him mostly on his own up front.
I hope the same mistakes are not made the beginning of this campaign and we start with both Bellamy and Crouch.

Reds close in on KuytAug 16 2006

By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

DIRK KUYT'S future will be resolved over the next 24 hours, as Liverpool edge closer to an agreement with Feyenoord.

Kuyt is on international duty with Holland, but negotiations have intensified behind the scenes with further talks today crucial if the transfer is to go ahead.

Feyenoord have continuously stood by their valuation of £10m, having so far rejected a player-plus-cash offer.

The Reds have made a bid in the region of £8m for the striker, and are also prepared to offer Jan Kromkamp as part of the deal.

Dutchman Kromkamp was left out of the Liverpool squad which travelled to Cardiff at the weekend, but has been pencilled in to play for the reserves in Lincoln tonight.

Having been informed by Kuyt he wants to move to Anfield, Feyenoord have become increasingly resigned to losing the striker.

If the Kromkamp swap remains a no-go, the key to the conclusion of the deal is whether Liverpool are prepared to makea straight £10m offer for Kuyt, or whether payments can be structured in a manner the Reds can afford.

However, it'snow clear Benitez is tantalisinglyclose to securing the signature of a player he's chased for two seasons.

The Dutchman is likely to be a Liverpool player in time to join the squad for the Premiership opener with Sheffield United on Saturday.

I thought so--one of the Echo articles (Bascombe or Doyle's) suggested that the "I lurve Newcastle" quotes from Kuyt were old quotes made many, many months ago before we showed any really serious interest.  Paper talk, just as I thought.

Tw@ts, just like the Owen saga all over again, they will probably bid 60 million for him now. But some dutch reporter on SSN has been saying Kuyt will choose Liverpool over Newcastle. Lets wait and see if he wants money or honours.

Newcastle United's top brass Freddy Shepherd and Glenn Roeder flew to Dublin today on a double mission.

The United pair are going to Lansdowne Road to watch Feyenoord striker Dirk Kuyt in Holland's friendly with the Republic of Ireland.

And United have chartered their own 10-seater plane so that they can bring Irish pair Stephen Carr and Alan O'Brien straight back to Tyneside after the game.

United are hoping the first part of their mission is not in vain, as they wait to see whether Dutch coach Marco van Basten plays Kuyt in his starting line-up.

Before leaving Newcastle airport at 9am this morning Shepherd told me: "Originally we had four players - Shay Given, Stephen Carr, Damien Duff and Alan O'Brien - in Dublin tonight and we made arrangements to take our own plane across and bring them home which, in the current situation, seems to be the best thing to do.

"And while Shay and Damien are back at our training ground for treatment, we have gone ahead with our original plan so that Stephen and Alan will be with the first-team squad tomorrow."

Both Shepherd and Roeder have admitted how hard they are finding it to bring in the quality player they want at St James' Park.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

Get him signed and then we can move on, this saga seems to have gone on almost all summer. I just hope there are no more twists and turns now and no last minute bids from Newcastle.

There are quite a few quotes about today from different sources of Kuyt saying that his first choice is Newcastle but he is willing to listen to offers from us. I'd :censored: hate to see him having to settle for second best

Dunno bout the tabloid quotes being that old.... in the SSN article below it said that the Daily Star quotes kuyt talking about both clubs

From SSN

(Glen Roaders comments)
"As for Kuyt, he is certainly not the quickest striker I've ever seen but he's a very hard worker and is always fully committed to the team effort.

"There are lots of plusses to the way he plays. We are in there working hard on that, but we're not the only Premiership club interested in him."

Liverpool are also in the frame for Kuyt, but the striker is eager to head to Newcastle.

"I would consider a move to Liverpool, but my first choice is Newcastle," Kuyt is quoted as saying in the Daily Star.

A lot of these "quotes" are a load of baloney if you ask me.

The fact a load of journo's have copied fake quotes from Kuyt and put it in their papers show the state journalism in this country is in.

You're probably right. There's a certain desperation about the way Newcastle do their tranfer business. Roeder can't resist talking about his targets in public and it's very likely they are willing to pay more for the player because it's the only way they can get him. I don't think we will see any movement on this transfer untill the club have secured qualification to the group stages of the Champions League. If money is as tight as we're led to believe then there's no way it will happen untill the TV money is in the bag.
