Yeung shows bold intent with £8m bid for Babel

Birmingham City yesterday kicked off the January transfer sales with an £8m bid for Liverpool's Dutch winger Ryan Babel in the first indication that new owner Carson Yeung is ready to back his manager, Alex McLeish, with significant funds. Babel, 23, has been open about his disillusionment at Liverpool and is willing to move this month although the clubs are still some way off in their valuation of the player. Liverpool rate Babel at around £12m, having bought him from Ajax for £11.7m, and are unlikely to accept Birmingham's first bid.

Rafael Benitez, the Liverpool manager, said on Friday that he was not planning to sell Babel although he will have to raise money if he is to buy players in this transfer window. Babel has never made the progress that was hoped for when Benitez took a gamble signing him in 2007. Babel is regarded as the most saleable asset that Liverpool can afford to let leave. While Benitez is not blessed with great depth in his squad, he does have cover in the left-sided positions. He desperately needs to sign a striker, possibly Roman Pavlyuchenko from Spurs, but in order to do so he will need to earn money from sales.

The offer for Babel demonstrates how serious the Birmingham ownership are about backing McLeish, whose team are eighth in the table after a run of seven wins and four draws in their last 11 league games. McLeish would like to strengthen the entire team but a left-sided player is one of his priorities.

bite. hand. off. If we can get more then great, but I'd take £8m for Babel.

So would I.

It would be losing money compared to what he costed, but provided what he has done these years, I'd say that's a lucky offer we should accept.

With that money bring a couple of useful players, if you don't like the Spanish cheapos like Riera or Arbeloa, then someone competent from England.

This reminds me of the Alonso/Barry saga.

Player with talent not wanted, graft player coveted.

Babel not wanted, Lucas and Kuyt gets games.

Babel may have talent but the problem is he doesnt show it enough on the pitch and he has had plenty of chances to show it

Hopefully it's true it will give us some money.

If he goes to a different club and start performing and showing his class, It's going to speak volumes about Benitez

This reminds you of the Barry Saga? What?

See, the difference was, was that Alonso was a class player, a real value to the team, and actually had a work rate on the pitch. Babel on the otherhand was given his chances to prove his worth, but instead spent more time with sh*tty rap songs, his Twitter page, and generally b*tching to the press. He looks as if he could be a good player, but unfortunately for us and the manager, he's a lazy b*stard and deserves to be sold. That's the difference. He's been quiet happy sitting there on the bench getting his thousands handed to him, so f*ck him, and I hope he goes to Birmignham and then gets benched there.

And why mention Lucas and Kuyt for? They've absolutely f*ck all in common, unless Babel played in CM, and RW? I don't think so. I'd take those two any day of the week, because the reality is, those two actually look as if they want to play for the shirt, whereas that 50 Cent wannabe gimp doesn't. I gave Babel the benifet, but no more. Out the f*ck, I say. If we get 8 million for him, that's roughly what Celtic are after for McGeady. Him and Maxi on both wings would boost our team immensly.

unfortunately babel sees himself as some kind of superstar so i'd be very doubtful that he'd accept a move to birmingham. he'll be sitting at home covered in bling making up some shyte rap and waiting for the phone to ring with offers from barca, real madrid and ac milan.

8 million would be a great price for him but i think the player himself - along with his agent - is going to have the last word in any transfer dealings involving him.

I think Babel would do very well at Birmingham. He is suited to playing for a club lower down the league. At Birmingham opposition teams will play a high line and leave plenty of space in behind and with Babel being the focal point of their attack he will get plenty of goals. Babel, Keane, Cisse, Bent, all good players for mid table teams but not good enough for a champions league team in a top league.

Babel is finished at LFC and has been for a while. A lazy, apathetic, childish and cowardly player who has got ideas above his station.
I would take three ollies, two gobstoppers and a frog for him because he is costing us too much to keep him at the club

Here here. It is clear that his time at LFC is up and I would rip Brum's arm off to get £8m for him.

I think there is more to come from Babel but not at LFC (at least not under Rafa) and can see him developing into a v.good player after a fresh start/under a new manager.

But........sell him for £8m Rafa

If we can get 8 million for him that is great business.

Classic youtube player, you could make a compilation of his best bits and he would look world class.
Watch for 90 minutes and he will show 1 or 2 glimpses of talent but the rest is poor attitude, poor determination and one of the worst players i have seen at decision making in key areas.

I would take about 6 if i am honest and be well happy.

I would too Ben.

But - if true - it's this sentance that worries me...

I know things like this are published to try and get a good price through negotiations, which is all I hope it is, but it worries me if we really do try and hold on for double figures, it could put all interested clubs off

i'd accept 8 million in a shot and then try and get a % of his next sale.

However, 8 million for a rubbish player would be an excellent deal. He wasn't worth 11 million.
