Anybody think that babel could have been a different player if it was Wenger that had signed him .

Liverpool star's re-emergence gives Rafa a transfer dilemma of sorts
Football FanCast columnist Jerome Johnstone wonders if the performances of Ryan Babel are giving Rafa plenty of food for thought.

Another pre-season, another goal for Ryan Babel and suddenly he is giving Rafa Benitez a transfer dilemma of sorts as to what to do with the Flying Dutchman.

Babel is a player that I was certain was heading for the exit door this summer after two stop start seasons where he was used sparingly and whose only role at Liverpool seem to be that of an impact substitute. Rafa hinted the other day that he has been impressed with the application and effort shown by Babel in training, which has also been replicated in his performance in the friendlies, and is perhaps reconsidering any thoughts to cash in on him this summer. Music to my ears and no doubt many others.

There isn't a Liverpool fan I know that doesn't have faith in Ryan Babel and felt that maybe he wasn't getting the opportunities that he perhaps deserved, especially in Torres' absence. He certainly has the attributes to his game, therefore the decision to overlook him, firstly by buying Riera for the left hand side and then play the inexperienced Ngog instead of him upfront seem to suggest that Rafa was washing his hands of him and would happy sell to the highest bidder. It appears that Babel has responded to his manager's past criticisms and rather than sulk about it has rolled up his sleeves and decided to prove that he has a future.

Rafa was quite honest and open with his verdict on Babel and suggested that until such time that he adapted his game tactically to fit in with our style of play and upped his concentration levels then he will be used as an impact substitute. It was well documented at the time that Babel took exception to it and had the likes of Van Bastern fighting his corner and suggesting that he should move on, but whatever happened to Babel over the summer break has clearly redirected his focus and determination to prove himself at Anfield. It is certainly been welcomed and the upturn in his form and attitude will no doubt be giving Rafa food for thought

BTW way it wasn't a Cruff turn (& whose Cruff anyway) it was the Maradonna 1 :p

Re-emergence? You mean playing in a preseason friendly?

Lets wait until he get two goals a game against Ure, Arsenal and Chelsea before stating Rafa has a dilemma. Until then he's still cr@p.

He needs to buckle up, this is last season here so i would think that he would possibly give his all. Only if he could sort out his descion making he would be a class act.

Nail on the head.

As someone said earlier id love to eat humble pie in seeing Babel force his way into the 1st team but based on what we have seen that seems a long shot.

There is something in Ryan Babel that needs to be matured. He has all the attributes to be a good striker he just needs to nail down and show us the player he can be.It's all about his personality and he needs to really go for it.This will surely be his last season with us if he doesn't show what he can do.I would love it if he proved us wrong as i'm sure he can.

I really don't know what to say about this lad any more. He was bad today but then again so was the whole team. I know it's only the first game of the season but he doesn't look like he has improved at all on last season.

The thing is he can't cut it as a LW in the premier league....end of story.

He might do something in holland...might even have a odd good international game in that position. But in the premier league where we have pacy fullbacks, he can't do anything.

So if we want to keep babel...just put him on the right or bring him on as a sub to torres.

And then get rid of him. Cisse is twice the player babel is...and we got rid of cisse...

Year after year people say about how much potential he has and how we should hold on to him, yet he seems to have gotten worse.

If this guy had the intelligence of Benayoun and could read play he would be world class but lets face it, he isnt the brightest chip in the pan.

We should make whatever money we can out of him as soon as possible.

I can't see any potential at all in this guy. What he has some pace about him? Whoopdidoo so do most footballers. He has zero game intelligence and awareness. Im starting to think his goal against Derby a few years ago was a fluke.
