MON on the BBC at Euro 2008 whining and complaining about it. Making repeated hysterical comments to the press. It's fine if he didn't want to sell, but the way he's acted, you'd think Rafa had made a bid for his first born child.

For all we know, Rafa himself has become frustrated with Villa's increasingly unreasonable demands and he's also agreed with the board and said "fook it, we can look elsewhere"

You could be right manhattan , but why make a statement on the offal ,totally going against what rafa had previously said , something along the lines of "it's not about the money" was what rafa said . The statement clearly suggests that it is about the money.

Well it could be that Rafa has said "why waste so much money on one particular player, when I may have an option elsewhere for cheaper, or perhaps the same amount of money, in a different position?"

He may have had an 18M budget.

It doesn't mean it was ALL meant for Barry.

Or it could be that G+H have said ,feck you rafa ,your not spending £18 million on a player ,who has no sell on value .We will buy someone else who is younger ,who we can flog in a few years time to make some of our (or should i say the banks) money back.

I don't think so.

If they said that, I doubt Rafa would be satisfied and would resign.

Its not that dramatic.

We signed Keane for 20 million - what will he be worth in 3 years when he's 31?  7 million max taking into account he will be nearing the end of his contract? Thats mighty fancy depreciation.

To sign Barry for 18 million, he'll be worth what in 3 years? Possibly 7 again?

Maybe its not the purchase price but the accululated depreciation?

DIC Back In The Frame
Reports from the Middle East indicate that Dubai International Capital (DIC) are ready to re-launch their Liverpool takeover bid, as tensions mount between manager Rafael Benitez and the club's current owners....

DIC attempted to take control of the Merseyside club in March, but their £400million bid was rebuffed despite the widening rift between co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

The Arab firm had planned to buy out Gillett's majority stake with the aim of then challenging Hicks for sole ownership by offering up cash for the club's new stadium, which the Americans have so far struggled to do.

But Hicks, the more prominent of the co-owners, vetoed that deal and relations have since improved between he and his business partner.

Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the pair's associations with Benitez.

The Spanish tactician has had to operate under strict sell-before-buy guidelines in the transfer market, and to his credit had been doing so with a minimum of fuss as he offloaded the likes of John Arne Riise and Peter Crouch before signing Andrea Dossena and Robbie Keane.

However, Benitez had been under the impression that he would be allowed to fork out the £18million required to sign Gareth Barry (pictured) from Aston Villa without selling Xabi Alonso, whose proposed move to Juventus collapsed earlier in the summer.

Either the owners have renegged on their promise or a massive miscommunication has occurred, because Hicks and Gillett have told the manager that Barry is not needed while Alonso is still in the squad.

It is not the first time during the Americans' short reign at the club that Benitez has been told certain targets are off-limits, and this latest case will only further infuriate both he and the fans - who, despite their backing of Alonso, have been equally supportive of Rafa's designs for the team's progress.

Hence, a DIC takeover would be widely welcomed, and Dubai newspaper The National claims that the firm are set to refresh their bid.

A source close to the DIC directors said: "Just because it is has been a quiet summer does not mean DIC have lost interest. They are happy that things have now become low key, and they are awaiting developments."

As much as i'd like DIC to take over their timing is just typical, what was wrong with May or June? I new it was to quiet, a couple of days away from our first competitive game and the papers are full with yet more LFC  ownership strife storys, i sometimes think that the only reason Rafa hasnt resigned is because he's hoping every day will be their last.

to be fair, if the owners are preventing rafa from signing barry, they are quite right. why do we need him when we have alonso, gerrard, plessis, lucas, mash and other youngsters who can play there? its a waste of money which should be spent on a real winger on the left or right. also, pacheco has so much potential i feel he should at least be on the bench. thing with liverpool these days is that they dont seem to give potential stars a chance. fowler, macca, owen, carra, etc you get my point? i guess the owners are asking themselves if barry is needed. and what sort of improvement is he on what we already have? look at madrid (of all teams) spending under 10mil for a younger player in van der vaart and we miss out on him? for this instance, im not backing rafa. this offer and want for barry is making no sense.

it's not about whether or not barry is a suitable target for us it's about whether or not the owners should be interfering in a manager's job in the first place...

I dont buy into this one, its a wind up thats printed every time Rafa doesnt get his way.

I´ve looked at the news networks and cant find the story anywhere so it looks like a wind up.  (awaiting an avalanche of replies with links... !)

DIC said they are out and we have to accept thats the case until proven otherwise, ie a firm offer is made, hopefully by that dishy blonde. Until then, lets get on with life.
