It cannot be any clearer than that.

I don't think so, because it sends a message to all other clubs that Liverpool can be held to ransom for a player who's value may be grossly inflated.

No it doesn't, it sends a message to the manager 'you're in charge of the footballing side of the club'. HERE IS YOUR MONEY, ALLOCATE IT HOW YOU SEE FIT.

It's a financial control called a budget.

It's financial control also in the sense of not blowing the entire transfer budget on an overvalued player. While their previous management decisions have been :censored: poor, on this one, they've made the correct one.

If the signing of Barry for £18m could be considered an absolute wreckless use of funds, I may agree. As it is - it cannot be justified, especially by a pair who've demonstrated a palpable lack of understanding about the game.

If they haven't faith in his ability to recuit players who will improve us, sack him.

It's as simple as that.

If targetting Barry is so absolutely f*cking outrageous, and unjustifiable, get rid him.

Otherwise, allow him to use funds allocated to him as he sees fit.

Who is best placed to judge the needs of the team?

Rafa, the bloke who works day-in-day-out with the squad, who analyses our performances, who trains the players; the bloke employed to look after the footballing side of the club...

or two Americans, rarely in the U.K., and who have demonstrated exactly how NOT to run a football club?

There's no contest; Rafa is best placed to decide the needs of the squad, and if he is operating within a budget that permits him to spend £18m on Barry, let him have him. If the signing falls outside of the budget, they have every right to reject the deal on financial grounds.

I am not saying this is the case, I am arguing in principle.

Rafa may be best placed to decide the needs of the squad.

It doesn't mean the club management MUST sign any player he demanded.

If he demanded Lionel Messi and thought he would be a good signing, if management said "no", it doesn't mean Rafa should necessarily be fired, or that management are wrong.

Yes, criticise Hicks and Gillett for bad decisions, but I give them credit (no pun intended) for making good business decisions, such as not allowing Liverpool to pay over the reasonable valuation of a player.

The worrying part of this story is not the 'we will not pay £18 million for Barry' part, it's the 'let's buy you Silva instead'. Owners getting involved in player purchases ALWAYS results in problems. Let us not forget, G&H (and Parry) know nothing of football, if you trust the manager, back him, if you don't, hire somebody else. This is very, very worrying.

Ok, well I think that opinion is a load of sh!te and I can't make it any clearer than I already have. I've never said that the board MUST ratify the signing of any player the manager desires, I am saying they must support the manager and be REASONABLE in doing so, or sack him.

I'm with Shankly, Paisley, Ferguson, and a whole host of managers in thinking that directors and chairmen should exist merely to provide a basic framework for the manager to work within.

I think if the board ever tried to force a signing on Rafa he would walk as he did with Valencia. They should know though that should Rafa leave 1 or 2 players are bound to follow.

I think they have been reasonable by pulling out of the process to sign Barry when they think that Villa have placed an unreasonable price on him.

I'd agree, if Shankly, Paisley or Ferguson were currently managing us with a proven record of success in this league.

So far, Rafa has not demonstrated that he's anyway near those those guys in terms of league success. Nor do I think Barry is the man to get us any closer to Arsenal, Chelsea and Man U.
