Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby god_bless_john_houlding » Wed Apr 23, 2008 12:38 am

like it or not, Hicks is here. for me, it'd be easier just to support the fella (want to or not, I personally don't) but why would he sell to DIC knowing that's what we as fans want, the same fans who have threatened him, abused him and god knows what else to him. Once he leaves the club (which he will one day thankfully) he won't care about us, so he won't give a toss who he sells to as long as he gets some bread outta it. So he could easily sell for a couple of million less just to spite the fans. I think it'd be easier to support him, hopefully this will force him into giving a decent amount of whack in the kitty for the transfers this summer and it might mean he's more leniant to provide what he's promised. I mean lets be honest, if 40,000 thousand people were telling you to :censored: off every other day would you then go and do what they want? No you'd do everything in your power to spite them. So for the benifit of the club I think Hicks needs to be supported. It's obvious that hate towards him isn't getting him out of the club. I'm not saying feel any affection towards him and you can still hate the :censored: for everything he is, but we might have to support him for the club to move forward.

by the way if you believe this, you'll believe anything
1) You'll Never Walk Alone
2) pass and move is the Liverpool groove
3) FIRST WILL ALWAYS BE FIRST AND SECOND WILL ALWAYS BE NOTHING.
4) If Torres has scored 60 league goals for Liverpool by the start of the 2011/12 season, I'll say he's better than Owen.

GBJH,   I know where you're coming from however... the fans have created a critical mass of rejection, bad will and negative publicity which is brought into perspective by Liverpool police advising the amercian owners not to attend the game. That is an unsustainable position, he is effectively beseiged by his customers! Whacky! Not by his employees, or a union but by his clients. Probably a world first !

What H&G completely misunderstood is the tribalism of football compared to american sports. US clubs provide entertainment for a paying audience similar to going to the cinema. Football culture here in the last 50 years has created a fanaticism where the manager and players are obliged to achieve the expectations of the fans or, as countless managers and players have found, the sack looms.

Liverpool have uniquely taken it to the next stage - we dont just expect the manager and players to perform to our expectations but we now want to decide who owns the club, their qualifying criteria and their actions and priorities. new stadium, transfer money on call, create the best possible team.

Moores due to long connection with the club didnt suffer this, but from Souness onwards, every manager did. Now we've moved up the ladder another rung and we want to choose the owners.

Inevitably, the next demand will be a european super league....  and so it goes on.

What Hicks tried to do with his arrogant attitude was remind the fans who the boss is. He failed because he didnt take into account the way scousers ignore authority. The same coppers could have told him that....

reg I'm not coming from anywhere mate hence the final comment about "if you'll believe this, you'll believe anything" obviously it hasn't went down as I intended it to.

I don't want anybody involved with Liverpool Football Club supporting Hicks. He's done everything possible to ruin this club, that we all love. He's promised us this, that and the other, and we've come up short on near enough everything. I know Hicks is here, and there doesn't look like he's gonna be off for some time :( and while he is here I will hope and pray that he delivers what he's promised but we know it isn't looking likely. So :censored: him, he doesn't deserve respect from fans, players, other members of the board and most importantly Rafa Benitez. He's brought nothing but bad press to this club. I hate him and I can't believe he has the nerve to attend matches nevermind "trying" to sing You'll Never Walk Alone. He's a :censored: who will get to do things that many a diehard fan of this club won't. He's getting to go to matches, sit in the executive boxes, have a say who is bought, have a say in the new stadium, get to talk to the past legends as well as the current ones, things that only we could only dream of. It sickens me when he tries to explain his actions, because there's only one answer I want from the :censored: :censored:...when the :censored: are you leaving this club I've loved since I was old enough to talk? He's ruining the club, and I fear the worst for the future of the club during and after his reign as "owner". I can honestly see him refusing to sell to DIC permanantely because he knows it's what the majority of fans want. He won't want the fans getting anything they want for the way they have RIGHTFULLY treated him. Everything in this thread or any other thing where his name has been mentioned has to be said because of what's gone on with the club, but it really makes me cringe speaking about him. So I'm gonna wrap up on him here.

Benitez set to mediate at peace summit with Liverpool's feuding owners
April 23, 2008  CBS News

LIVERPOOL, England (AP) -Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has a new job - peacemaker.

The Spaniard wants to end the internal strife at his club and help American co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr. resolve their standoff.

There is added urgency after Liverpool was held 1-1 by Chelsea on Tuesday in the first leg of the Champions League semifinals with Hicks at Anfield for the first time since December.

But the meeting is unlikely to happen before next Wednesday's second leg at Stamford Bridge.

Benitez wants the pair to end their public feuding as his players bid for a third European Cup final in four years.

"We must be positive," Benitez said.

Benitez, who earlier this season learned that Juergen Klinsmann was being courted as his possible replacement, met with Hicks at Liverpool's training ground before Tuesday's match and again Wednesday.

"We were talking about maybe having a meeting with the owners and bringing everyone together," Benitez said after Tuesday's meeting. "It think it will be positive if we are all together."

Hicks is feeling the wrath of fans after foiling a Dubai oil consortium from taking control of the club.

Before kickoff, fans flicked abusive hand signals at Hicks as he appeared to join in the five-time European champion's anthem "You'll Never Walk Alone" while his son Tom Hicks Jr. - a club director - waved a Liverpool scarf in the air. Chelsea fans bellowed taunts of "USA! USA!" during the early stages of the match.

Despite the result, the Hicks family emerged from Anfield in a congenial mood after emerging mostly unscathed.

Gillett had been planning to also attend the first leg, but he didn't travel to northern England on doctors' advice.

That didn't lessen the tension after the owner of the Montreal Canadiens ice hockey team invited officials from Dubai International Capital to sit in the director's area.

NOTE: Rafa needs to call this meeting because he needs to know his transfer budget, advise his plans to buy and sell players and whether he can count on Parry to be his negotiator.  Rafa´s stuck in the middle.

I wonder if George Gillett might just want to get out of this sports franchise lark.  First, a few death threats from Liverpool supporters and now a riot after his other team--the Montreal Canadiens--prevailed over the Boston Bruins in the first round of the NHL playoffs.  That would be like Liverpool supporters tearing the city centre apart 'in celebration' after getting out of the CL group stages.  Incidentally, Canadiens fans have rioted after Stanley Cup victories in the past--an absolutely ridiculous way to 'celebrate' your team's success. :no

It's a police car, Barry, and that's not the only one that got destroyed.  The police figure that they were targeted in a coordinated way, which I suppose is something you can do if you know that fellow fans will rampage in the streets after a victory.  They'll need to bring the army out if Montreal get through the second rpund.  Gillett must be so proud!  :glare:

Tom Hicks ignores takeover talk to concentrate on summer of rebuilding.

Tom Hicks, the controversial Liverpool co-owner, has held talks with Rafael Benítez about a possible summer transfer strategy as he battles to ride the storm that continues to rage around the club. The two met on Tuesday morning and again yesterday, with Hicks promising to support Benítez in his pursuit of potential reinforcements such as Gareth Barry, the Aston Villa captain.

Whether Hicks will continue to call the shots at Anfield beyond the end of the season remains unclear, with Dubai International Capital (DIC) still confident that it will effectively take control by buying George Gillett Jr's 50 per cent stake at the end of May. But Hicks, who maintains that DIC's ambitions will not be realised, continues to talk and act like a man who believes that he will be running the club for both the short and the long term.

Hicks made a rare appearance at Anfield on Tuesday night as Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw by Chelsea in their Champions League semi-final, first leg, having spoken to Benítez at Melwood, the training ground, earlier. The Texan and his son, Tom Jr, a fellow director, returned to Melwood yesterday morning, when they held further conversations with Benítez, listening to his well-documented frustrations and discussing potential transfer targets and how any such moves would be financed.

“We had a great meeting,” Hicks said before yesterday's second discussion. “We talked about a lot of things and it was very positive and encouraging. We have agreed to meet again and it is a very healthy situation. Rafa is happy and wants to talk about where he is taking the club.”

There were claims from some sources that Benítez had told Hicks that he was unwilling to discuss anything of significance unless Gillett, the Texan's estranged co-owner, and Rick Parry, the chief executive, were in attendance. But Hicks said: “I am surprised if anyone else is saying different. We plan to all get together and discuss the future and Rafa is happy with that.”

Those words hinted at a breakthrough of sorts, but there are no other signs that a peace summit is in prospect. Gillett remains determined to sell his 50 per cent stake to DIC in the belief that, despite Hicks's fierce objections, it will be able to buy at the end of May, at the expiry of a 90-day exclusivity period offering Hicks first option on his partner's shares. Hicks, who has also caused consternation by demanding the resignation of Parry, maintains that no such clause exists in the share document and that DIC - which sent Sameer al-Ansari, its chief executive, and Amanda Staveley, the chief negotiator, to Anfield on Tuesday - will not get a single share in the club.

Benítez, meanwhile, has a list of potential summer targets, including Barry, the England midfield player, whose arrival would cast serious doubts about the future of Xabi Alonso at Anfield. Other targets include a right back, at least one winger and several promising young players.

Villa are determined not to lose Barry, their most influential player, and are preparing to offer a significant improvement on his £42,000-a-week contract. “If players are doing really well and deserving of new contracts or renegotiated deals, I have not got a problem with that,” Martin O'Neill, the Villa manager, said yesterday.
