Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Defoe would have been a good striking choice.

Even Anelka.

Both proven in the Prem.

So, let's say we sell Kuyt and Voronin.

Who replaces them? We need proven Prem strikers.

We've got Torres. We've got Crouch. Hell even Babel has bagged a few.

Well correct me if I'm wrong, which isn't likely, wasn't Morientes a "world class player" and what a signing he turned out to be eh? It's about time we did look at our youth or a lower league player because the ones we have aren't up to the task. Look at Crouch, we signed him from Southampton the year they went down, so in all fairness we signed him from a Championship side, and who do we all want playing? Crouch, the lad from a lower league, not some sh!t from abroad. Torres has proven he can cut it, fair enough, but the records show it's much easier to find a player who has come through the youth or from a lower league side.

3) FIRST WILL ALWAYS BE FIRST AND SECOND WILL ALWAYS BE NOTHING.
4) If Torres has scored 60 league goals for Liverpool by the start of the 2011/12 season, I'll say he's better than Owen.

Well at the start of the season I remember Kevin Doyle and Dave Kitson's names being mentioned, Kitson the top english goal scorer and Doyle can't do worse than what we have. Wouldn't cost a great deal and know how to play in England. Jones from Sunderland is another 1 in that brackett. I'd rather take a risky chance on a forward from a lesser Prem side for little money, than a huge buy from abroad who can't cut it. It makes sense.

You could take Guy Whittingham as an example. He played 23 games for Yeovil scoring 18 goals. He then joined Portsmouth who remember were in the lower divisions and played 160 games scoring 88 goals. Villa then thought wow hes good, 25 games and 5 goals later off he went. They may be good strikers in the lower leagues but it doesnt mean they will cut it at the top level.

It's still one in every 5, which for a lad who's just been brought up a couple of divisions isn't exactly bad, considering what "proven" internationals are doing in the league right now.

Still pretty poor though, another example is Andy Cole and how the manager and the style of each team varies. At Newcastle he was prolific, he scored goals. At United he didnt. Id like to bring up more players from the lower leagues but its down to whether or not they can adapt to not only the premiership but the club and the manager they sign for.

Well for everyone you bring up from lower leagues, there's Rush, Marcus Stewart and Kevin Phillips all of who have been top scorers in england's senior division, i'm not saying everyone will be a success but give them a go and they can't do worse than what we have, especially as just squad players.

A lot of players who used to play for liverpool were brought from lower league clubs but as the premiership was formed and the style started to change rush struggled. The others you mentioned were top scorers for there clubs. Which isnt hard considering those clubs they played for were pretty defensive with one striker up front.

Rush struggled because of his age. Also Stewart and Phillips were the top scorers in the league for Ipswich and Sunderland respectively.

Becuase I've supported Liverpool Football Club for nearly 40 years, but unlike you I have a knowledge of football as well, my love for Liverpool is first and formost, but I am also a football fan. Just because I follow English football closely, means I "bum off them"? Shows what a total idiot you are. Forget all this no slagging another fan off, because it's people like you, who quite clearly have no knowledge of Liverpool never mind football, why fans like myself get so wound up. You come on giving it the big I am when you clearly don't give a toss about Liverpool because you're happy coming 5th as that for some reason represents an improvement to you. Any geniune fan, not just Liverpool, who's had their club sewn into their hearts like me and many others I imagine, are not satisfied unless we win the league, you on the other hand, who no doubt started supporting us only on the back of the European Cup success in 2005 are happy with 5th.

It's generally easier to look abroad for players nowadays, it's invariably cheaper and you can find better quality for your money.

There aren't many players, if any at all in the Championship who would get into a top four team on a regular basis.

Crouch was a decent signing granted, but he'd scored fairly consistently at Southampton in the EPL before they went down. He wasn't really a Championship signing.

If the quality is there, they will be signed up by the top teams. It simply isn't there, and the bar has been raised.

He scored more with the Manc's than at any other club. He was joint top scorer in the league in 97/98.

Top teams don't see it, IMO. They think the talent is only from abroad. Take Cahill for example, Everton a team going nowhere when he signed and he's proven to be a great signing for them, Lescott the same.
