One question which I would like to know the answer to......... has Torres got a powerful shot? I haven't seen him really HIT a ball yet. Is he like Owen, or does he have a Shearer type shot in his armoury?

I recall him scoring in the world cup with a pretty powerful, and incredibly accurate strike. He appears to be more cunning, and delicate with his finishing on the whole, but I think he possess the 'Shearer factor' for sure. All in all, I think the guy has the lot.

Still not convinced.......... if that was the goal in question Accuracy top notch, power wise still not so sure.

IMHO his long shot is not hindered by a lack of power, for instance Aldo rarely shot outside of the box because he didn't have power. It's not Torres's case, in Torres case he lacks maybe the technical gesture of Gerrard's body when he shoots while running. Often he sends it to the clouds because he leans back too much or he eats the ball for leaning too much frontwards.

With the right gesture of the body he'd be able to score from inside and in the border of the box as he does often, AND from range, which he doesn't often.

That's my 5 cents on the issue. But then, just as he has started this season to score naturally AND regularly, he might start to surprise me aswell in the range shots! So far Torres has surprised me all the season. Not for the quality, which always was there, but the consistency in deliverig this quality.

So you were expecting more Newcastle games?  I think when you know that you can beat people and are good at scoring from close, there isn't a huge need to be able to send rockets into the top corner.  Plus we got Stevie for that anyway (and Riise used to be), and he is the one that is normally in the positions for those kinds of shots.

I was just interested to know if he had power in his locker. Lack of power hasn't stopped Owen from scoring regularly, but it does effect in what areas he presents the greater danger.

Think this debate was touched on in another thread s@int.

I think it was StMike who was saying Torres reminded him of Henry the way he glided past players.  I reckon he is similar to Henry in that respect but I pointed out he has yet to threaten scoring from outside the box - something that Henry was also very good at.  As a side note Torres is on the other hand a real aerial threat unlike Henry.

But going back to your point about power, Torres is a big six foot plus athletic player who is strong on the ball.  This added to his undoubted technique makes it hard for me to believe that he couldn't rifle the odd one in from outside the box.

I think the simple fact is that at the moment he doesn't need to shoot from long range.  He just prefers to take the man on or pass and move when in those positions.

It's a surprise that he hasn't had an opportunity for long shots when you consider that Birmingham were the only team we've played all season who defend deep :p :D

I still remember the pro's one after another coming on here to justify that remark after the Brum game. Like I said at the time, the manager was taking the p!ss out of the press, and yet we got the "no you can see what he's saying. Voronin on the other hand, he works well between the lines, and Kuyt does the channels blah blah." Come on lads, admit it, he did you all there, sold you one and you called it wrong.

What about us pros that also figured that Rafa was talking out of his ring-piece on that occasion...do we have to come clean too?  :p  :D

I have no problems to admit when I'm wrong, I'm human.

For instance, I'm receiving each of the goals of Torres happily. I feared he'd be yet another striker not scoring enough goals under Rafa (that is, like every of his strikers so far) with the bonus problem of him being expensive. So far no continuous Newcastle failing days, and so far no "I'm in holidays this match" kind of game.

I got that wrong, and I got wrong how he'd adapt to the more blunt, strong and honest English CB.

There, I admit it.

I admit I don't know if Rafa sold us one or was serious when he told us the playing between lines one. I admit I bought that one, I still buy it for that matter.

In fact, I think and I must warn that Rafa will cause dismay again. He will rest Torres again at some point. He will rotate him. Less than to other players, but he will. I don't think he'll make newkit happy by playing him every single game available. I'm afraid he will give winds to the antirotation ship again. He's stubborn, you know.
