I’d imagine Benitez bought Pennant off because Pennant was getting hot headed on the pitch, which could have led to a rash lunge and a second yellow card. Is this another post designed to have a sly criticism of Benitez? I felt Benitez set the team up accordingly and the team came out of the blocks well, the problem was not taking chances.

Kuyt and Alonso had fabulous chances to put the game beyond all doubt; both were squandered as per usual. There is no reason to criticise Benitez today, because his tactics and team selection was very good, very capable of collecting the three points.

nothing wrong with criticising rafa...

i'm a rafa fan and i will keep him for at least 6 years before i think about sacking him if i owned liverpool... but pennant was torturing cole again... plus babel looks better playing on right... plus riise wasn't doing too well... so i would have replaced riise with babel... instead of replacing pennant... and if you intend to bring on crouch... it makes even more sense to keep a winger who can cross... other than that rafa did a good job...

You make me sick lad and people like you! FU.CK OFF!

Riise had a great game today especially in the first half he was id say the difference apart from Gerrard...go and watch a game ya tool!

Players need time and minutes on the pitch..its really only worth making mass changes if we are getting duffed and that never happened today ,not from Chelsea..only folk like you!

Just read this on RAOTL:

The most animated I've ever seen Andy Gray afterwards. Absolutely slated Styles for the pen AND for not sending off Essien.

When Gray is sticking up for us you know something is not right. He said that the decision for the pen was "Farcical" He also went on to say he NEVER uses that word AND that Styles is basically a liar for saying he didn't book Essien again.

I then needed to be picked up from the floor.

He also said that we were ROBBED of 2 points!

What if the scum win the league by 1?Hypothetical question i know but what if?

Referees should be treated as players and punished when they have bad games and ruin football matches!

Its fair to say that a decision from a bad ref can have more influence on any game than a yellow card fowl!

SORT IT OUT FA WAN>KSTAINS!!

I think that was THE worst refereeing performance I have ever seen.  Yes, the penalty was a disgrace, but he called loads of the little stuff wrong too...giving numerous corners as goal kicks and vice versa...

All I hope is that we don't miss out on the championship by 2 points at the end of the season...when this game will be long forgotten by most people.

He should never referee a prem game again IMO.

As Jamie Redknapp said, we should be believing that we can challenge this season as we were the better team, and they were gifted the draw.

Bottom line though, if we had taken one or two of our chances it wouldn't have mattered.  We can't keep dominating games without killing them off.

Overall, a pleasing day, which showed we are in the race though.

Biggest tragedy of the day was the fact that Fergie will be sitting right now with a smug grin on his face getting tore into a bottle of whiskey, no doubt toasting that sad excuse for a c*nt Rob Styles. He's seen his team beaten, and potentially in bad shape if one of his biggest rivals were to gain 3 points from this game. A draw was the best he could have wished for. Plus the Gunners blew it at Blackburn.

But there are nothing but possitives from what I've seen from us, pre season and the season proper so far. We look really strong and can only improve more. Redknapp said the same thing I did when watching the United game earlier. he looked at their bench as I did, and noted just how poor it was in comparison to ours. I feel we now have the stronest squad in the Premiership, and the likes of Babel and Torres showed today that they will be well worth the money spent, in contrast to the Nani's and Anderson's of this world. So who was fretting when United made these sigings again? Unstoppable, eh? I said it once, I'll say it again: catch yourselves on.

Babel looks like a real crackerjack of a player. It's been said he's a player very much of the Henry mould, and I can certainly see why it's being touted as so. Today, when he unleashed that bullet (and the simulatainious sound of a few thousand Chelsea fans sh*tting their cacks as they thought it hit the back of the net) it showed that he is giving us a real menace of pure unpridictable and powerful striking from outside the area that any defender and keeper would be afraid of throwing themselves in front of. I can see his score a few stunners in the coming months. Quality buy.

Had to wait a while before posting or i'd just have ended up saying profanities like a lot of people here....

A couple of things about this game.

I believe we played very well, we showed that we CAN challenge properly for the title this season, we outclassed Cheatski in every area, we made them look like a middle table team.

It bodes well for the rest of the season IMO and if it wasnt for THE most ridiculous decisions every to grace a football field by a ref we would have come away with the 3 deserved points.

Man of the match was Gerrard by a country mile, was also very impressed with Torres, looks like we may have what we need finally up front, also agree with the comments that Riise should have been replaced by Babbel.

A decent game spoilt by a tremendously large anus, oh and i wish someone would just kill John Terry, not fit to be England captain, who the feckig hell does he think he is?, shame really as he is a great player, the attitude destroys him (which Mourinio has built into every single cheatski player)

Body checked out of a challenge that showed you had balls!

It cools down ..for a second ..the player who challenged you looks up with a wry smile! Its all OK ..ITS Football....

Unfortunately behind him there is a cartoon man flashing cards,(split second)hes giving me a free kick....yeah Pepe will take it............Its in OUR box!

I forgot the cartoon is Rob Styles not a biased ref to anyone just really really bad at his job!

Its a penalty to them...our efforts and passion are put to bed by one bad decision...HE SCORES>>but there is no dignity in the goal....its businesslike and efficient(Frank allover)........

Beaten weakened looking Chelsea had a lifeline and took it...LFC are deflated by no means beaten! The match finishes with 1 goal each!
We shake hands and respect eachother ,we are players from the same mould!

I look at the ref with a feeling from somewhere near hatred and pity!I want to spit in his face but im bigger than that.....Let him walk on by and into his room and into his life where only a mute would realise that they were good at their job!

Only a mute would take charge of a big game knowing they are foolish and incompetent but Mr Styles will again ....It may be us ,it may be Fulham ....anyone, this ref is not good enough and costs teams points!!
