im afraid the Media and the web of intrigue and over-expectation it generates, are as significant a part of the modern game as never before. everybody wants a 'peep' under the microscope for the merest shred of controversy. licking their pallid lips in anticipation of a 'GREAT STORY' - (to infamously quote one unfortunate individual, who's very breath on these matters is infact in jeopardy of being silenced, quite painfully, and quite inevitably, should he find himself within the wrong back-alley some day, not overdue!)
There is of course large scope for the masses to be satisfied fully nowadays, with nothing sacrosanct from the tireless, critical glare of the lens or the postulated, 'soap-box' scribings of internet Forums/Blogs and written Lavatoria that pass off as information someone declares essential for the public domain. Desire for 'gossiping ammunition' is as rife as ever. the will to use it offensively has never been greater.
Rafa Benitez himself is no fugitive from this circus of 'bullsh1t', some would say neither should he be.
he's representing our own hopes, dreams or anxieties when he stands there infront of that MDF partition, festooned with the logos and corporate sponsored symbols of organisations that demand he wouldnt be stood giving his explanation of events anywhere else after a game, because they've paid through the nose for the right to have their name associated with the priveleged inquest, or 'live' execution depending on the results... they are damn well going to expect a response. now the crux of that is, whether the words Rafa (or any other member of staff) chooses to divuldge infront of the 'eye of Horus' is going to be nothing but the truth, the whole truth and nothing else.... therein lies a modicom of control for the accused. i wouldnt expect him (or most other managers tbh) to go all-out guns blazing and ridicule anybody from his own camp in front of the drooling, snipers world of the Sports News industry or its offshoots..thats never going to happen. quite right too!
but maybe, rafa, who quite obviously speaks relatively good english now, should take a detour on occasion from the company 'line' and add his own 'spin' on the events, you say? ... what happens then? he gets slaughtered by them AND us. funny thing is, when he has produced a concept that appears to the media as bizarrely 'thinking outside the box' - he invariably proves the doubters quite wrong...frequently after its opened its own critical mouth beforehand and ended up with egg on its face. and a size 11 boot to swallow. but to this day he will get little credit for any genius. thats too boring. they want cynicism and tales of revenge - they are no friends to our club - why should they be courted with the respect that affords.
you are never going to hear what you think you deserve to, or want to hear during any pre/post match interview on the telly - forget it. (not the juicy bits anyway) if at all anything of real substance. the Media simply isnt as forgiving or tolerant as it were in the days of Shanks etc.. -they want blood, gore and any other part of you they can rip-off now. for the valiant cause of...sales. and because of that, im glad our gaffer does his real business work inside the walls of Melwood and Anfields dressing room. (where it matters most)
quite frankly, other than for the purpose, perversely described as 'squirming' for those people who sit on their backsides for 2 hours infront of the box. i see little point in any manager having to come out of the workplace and pander to the camera's cold calculating black-hole of a stare. regardless if theyve won lost or controversially seen anybody going into the wrong room at the wrong time....for example.
as long as where it matters, the worthwhile speaking is being done in house, you'd hope.
but then again, more than half the world is pre-occupied with people who see fit to find the failings of other folk entertaining. you just have to pick up the Radio Times and scan through the programming schedule to confirm that.
nonetheless, its also equally true to say, that without the blessed Media at all - the great majority of us, would get to see little football in the first place .....it doesnt however suggest you take their doctrines on board as masquerading in place of 'the truth'. nor will it leave you with a feeling that you have cause to come in here and spread you own brand of 'evil' just to claim yourself superior to any other working man/woman because Andy Gray is your idol. and he must be right, coz he's on sky? also its laughable at best, to assume you could hold any real authority over anyone with an opinion that you dont like by the spitefully intended, narrow-minded use of the pixelated text of a microsoft keyboard!
still, there will be thread after threads ruined in due course because of the fact people are simply, free to actually speak.
at the end of the day, Rafa Benitez is no more turning into the mumbling- bumble headed rich, frenchman than iam. its just he is obligated to say - something, anything even. for the purpose at least of the appearance of 'unity' and 'morale' he's saying the right things. it remains our only remit to comment on whether that translates itself effectively enough on the pitch, before obtaining the right to put phrases in the managers mouth, both for the sake of it and just for the satisfaction of being right on an internet forum. words? nah! give me actions anyday. and we know he IS a man of them.
