I've got nothing against Hargreaves, to be honest. I just don't think he played the role he was given to it's full effect. I don't blame the lad for bombing forward and trying to create something, but that's not what your holding midfielder is supposed to do. It's a very specialised role. Stevie G was knackered, true, but I think that's because he was forced to play box-to-box by Hargreaves' forward runs. I lost count of the amount of times that Stevie had to come and collect the ball from Ferdinand and Terry, because Hargreaves was further forward than he should have been. I wouldn't have been too aggrieved if Sven had dropped Lamptard and played Gerrard and Hargreaves together with two up front, but I just think Carrick's a better bet at holding midfielder because of his greater passing range.
Yeah, he may be praised in the Sunday tabloids, but I don't really give a freeze-dried f**k about their opinions. And when you start to judge a player's worth by a couple of decent World Cup games, you end up signing some spastic like El-Hadji Diouf.
Hargreaves was OK, nothing more. I honestly think that Lamptard has been the weak link in the England chain for this World Cup campaign. He's achieved nothing more than ballooning every promising chance he's had into the stands, and he's taking up a shirt that could be worn by someone with the ability to make a difference to the game. Lamptard has been nothing but a wasteful, unobservant, unmotivated, selfish passenger.
