LIVERPOOL VS REAL BETIS - CLOSED

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Sabre » Wed Nov 23, 2005 10:37 am

Come on Liverpool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You're the favourite but don't get confident. As Joaquin has said yesterday in the John Lennon airport, this is the most important match of the history of Betis.

Oliveira is out, so it is Dani, but they've recovered Edu, who's not fully fit, but can give us troubles. Capi, Assunçao and Joaquin, who are going to play today, are certainly guys to worry about, they are class, it's just that due to injueries they could not play together so far this season.

Here everybody talks about this is Joaquin's match to show Aragones that he must be in Germany, so we'd expect a motivated Joaquin.

Anyway, we are better, but come on Liverpool! we need a good liverpool today

Betis manager calls for character Nov 23 2005

By Paul Walker, Daily Post

REAL BETIS'S veteran manager Lorenzo Serra Ferrer claims his squad is down to the bare bones for the Champions League clash with Liverpool and he called on his players to show their character at Anfield if they want to survive in the tournament.

Defeat for the Seville side - who beat Chelsea last month - will end their hopes of qualifying for the last 16 and send current group G leaders Liverpool into the next stage.

Liverpool, who need only a point to progress, are facing La Liga's second-bottom club knowing their opponents have been stripped of their two top strikers through injury.

Brazilian Ricardo Oliveira is out for six months with a cruciate knee injury, midfielder Fernando Varela is suspended, while Dani Martin suffered an Achilles problem on Saturday in the explosive derby defeat at Seville which saw 14 yellow and two red cards.

Ferrer, 52, may have to partner Edu and Xisco Munoz up front, supported by winger Joaquin, the 24 year-old who insists he is a transfer window target for Liverpool despite manager Rafael Benitez's constant denials.

"I can send out my team with my thoughts and messages but it is up to them and their own character to impose themselves and our style onto the game," said Ferrer..

"We must continue the spirit we have shown in this competition and realise what a win at Anfield will give us.

"We have done well so far in the group, third place is almost certain, and we have to continue with that same mentality.

"Hopefully we can show the same energy and determination we have already produced in the competition for this match.

"It is in our own hands, if we win the last two games then we will be almost certain of qualifying. Will Liverpool win at Chelsea in their last match?

"We must continue to play the way we did against Chelsea. These games, as with Liverpool, are huge for us and very difficult in our first season in the competition, but we have shown we can win matches at this level."

Ferrer will wait anxiously for a fitness test on Edu's ankle injury, and said: "I accept it is more difficult because of the injuries we have. We will have to make big changes up front. First we have lost (Ricardo) Oliveira and now Dani has a knee injury after our defeat at Seville.

"We have no option but to look inside our own squad for alternative, we are down to the bare bones and hope that Edu is fit."

LOL, I love this man, and I do not use to like my countrymate coaches.

He's so balanced. Heh, I can see he's improving his english, but many details show that he still thinks in Spanish, once he learns to do that (tough) he'll speak like a scouser!

Highlights: I've already agreed before that being first or second it doesn't matter. In fact, it doesn't matter even to consider that, as he says, only this game is important right now. Superb answer about Crouch, honest, convincing and right

In Rafa I trust!

btw, what does gaffer mean?

It's an English  term for "Boss" or "Manager". Not exclusive to Liverpool, though.

I knew I should have refreshed the page before answering Sabre!!!!! :O

I think tonight's is going to be a very hard match. Betis have a lot to lose, and we have tended to come unstuck against teams with injury problems in the past.

I think it would be insane to drop Mori, especially for Crouch as the lads been scoring recently, and surely we want that to continue!?!

The team I'd like to see is this:

                                      Reina
Finnan                      JC                Sami                      Riise

                             Sissoko
                                             Alonso
Gerrard                                                                Kewell

                              Mori
                                         Cisse.

(Assuming Garcia isn't fit.)
The width in that team, together with the battling Sissoko and majestic Alonso should be enough to whack Betis, the only concern being the weakness of the left-hand-side (facing Jaoquin). It may be a better idea to swap Riise with Kewell, and slap Traore in at LB purely because he's quicker than Warnock.
Either way, I think it'll be a really tough match.

Not your fault that you are all kind enough to answer, Lando, thanks for that. I asked because there are words that are quite difficult to get, even with a dic. I learnt for instance that "Scouser" applies to all Liverpool citizens, and it used to be humble people, workers, now applied to everybody. Gaffer is according to my dic "Boss of electric machinery" :O, and well, Liverpool is quite electric but I thought it may have some second meaning. TA!!!!!
