Right i'm going to get slated i know but this is my opinion. I think that Rafa is going to look a bit off a fool when this is all over. If he does not think we need another striker there is something wrong. Souness for all his faults has called our bluff. I'm sick and tired of Rafa telling us that we need cover for the Centre backs and a right sided midfielder. Personally i think we should talk about cover when we have a backbone of a team in place. At the moment the back bone is Carra, Hyypia at the back Gerrard, Alonso in the middle but we have nobody i believe we can rely on up front. f*ck cover, last night showed we don't have cover. We need a decent 1st team before you start looking at cover.

If Rafa dosent want him, then thats the end of it surely, and does anyone think if moores uses his own money or forces Rafa to  buy him, that will do us any good.Rafa would feel undermined and very realistically think "i,m out of here".Would the board risk losing Rafa, over Micheal Owen........i say not

thats how Rafa sees it.  He won't blow the rest of his tansfer kitty on a 15+ million transfer for Owen and i don't blame him.  We need a central defender (unless you want Josomi as cover   ) We need a right winger, badly too!it's rumoured Newcastle have offered 18 million for Owen.....thats way too much in my opinion.

About the CB , I prefer not to buy in that area .... I think Zak Whitbread can do the job. Let put all the money to buy Cicinho... He 's good ...

cover for the right side?  we don't have ANYONE to play on the rightside of midfield, and there is no way Hypia and Cara are going to play all season and not get injured.  Do you want us to spend all our money on Owen...only for hypia to get injured and play the likes of Josomi at CB??

From Sky sports

Newcastle United have agreed a club record fee with Real Madrid for England striker Michael Owen.

The Magpies are determined to bring the former Liverpool forward to St James' Park even though he has expressed a preference for returning to Anfield.

Owen has indicated he would only join Newcastle on loan but The Magpies have agreed terms with Real, a club they are used to doing business with after selling Jonathan Woodgate to the Spanish giants.

The striker seems certain to move on from the Bernabeu this summer, following crunch talks with Real president Florentino Perez on Tuesday, and he admitted it would likely be a straight fight between Liverpool and Newcastle for his signature.

The England forward suggested his preferred choice was to head to Liverpool, adding he would only consider a loan move to St James' Park in what is a World Cup year.

However, these comments have not deterred Newcastle who have announced they have agreed a club-record fee with Real for the striker.

"Newcastle United have met Real Madrid's asking price and conditions," a statement on the club's website read.

"The agreed fee will be a record transfer fee for Newcastle United.

"It is now up to the player and his advisor."

Much will now depend on whether Magpies chief Graeme Souness can persuade the 25-year-old to pledge his future to Newcastle.

Owen's prowess in front of goal would give Newcastle a huge fillip, as they have yet to replace departed pair Craig Bellamy and Patrick Kluivert and are reliant on Alan Shearer, who is the current club-record signing at £15 million, ploughing a lone furrow in attack.

However, he has indicated that he is not keen on making a permanent switch to the North East and the offer from Tyneside could flush out other interested parties - with Arsenal, Manchester United and Everton all linked with the speedy forward

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This would suggest a fee in excess of £15million   :sniffle

I don't think theres anyway that Owen will sign a contract with Newcastle. I mean he leaves liverpool to win more medals with madrid and a year later goes to Newcastle. Maybe he'll go on loan but he wouldn't want to be contracted to them.
