Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I tend to agree with this perspective. Of course we could've cancelled the Mignolet deal when it became apparent that Valdes was going nowhere, which would have also made sense, but I think the chances of him moving next year are very good, so you can understand the club making this decision.

I am concerned with Mignolet's distribution, everything I've seen and heard suggests this isn't his strongpoint, whereas Reina is one of the best distributers of the ball I've seen. I'll miss that. But Reina hasn't been great of late, he is moving to spend a year with a manager and GK coach who know him and will get the best out of him - and he'll then hopefully move on to Barca playing at his peak - and I can't begrudge him that.

@tancredipalmeri: Liverpool have been asked by Napoli to raise their contribution to Reina's wages. So now Liverpool should pay not 800k €, but 1.6m €

So we will also be paying some of his wages !

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers rules out a loan move for Napoli target Pepe Reina

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has ruled out a loan move for Pepe Reina - claiming it's permanent or nothing.

The Spanish shot-stopper is heading for the Anfield exit door after the signing of Simon Mignolet from Sunderland  - with Napoli looking his most likely destination.

But The Kop boss had ruled out a loan move - and yesterday claimed Reina needs to be sold to get him off the wage bill.

"Nothing as of yet," Rodgers said when asked of the latest on Reina, reports the Metro.

"The latest was that there was an offer to take him on loan but that’s something that hasn’t been discussed any further."

Where does Rodgers claim that "Reina needs to be sold to get him off the wage bill"? I hope he didn't really say this and that the media is adding stuff as usual.

Over the weekend he said that Reina leaving was more a financial choice because of the wages Pepe was on we could afford to have him on the bench - which of course went again what he initally said about competition for places and having two strong GK's.

I don't have a link at the minute but he did say it.  He basically said his wages were a big issue.

Strong words by Brendan on the TAW podcast.   (Taken from RAWK)

"I was aware from his representatives that we were supposed to receive an offer for him in the summer"

"I've been stung before, so I wasn't going to sit back and be left short of a top quality GK and then scratch about for another GK. So we had to act and get one of the top GKs in the summer."

what a mess of a situation this is turning out to be.
im a bit disgusted that we are letting him go but if we are subsidising any of his wages then this is nothing but a farce. i cant say im surprised napoli are trying for it as we have a keeper that we dont want with no one else is showing interest and rodgers has pretty much said he wont be sitting on the bench with his wage.
its like playing hold em and turning your own cards over pre-flop.

Initially, it was never about competition or Pepe's wages. If Reina hadn't been flirting with Barcelona in the first place, we wouldn't be in this situation. But he did and he obviously wanted to leave, and as jacdaniel posted above, Rodgers had to act quickly. Since Barca pulled out, we have a world class high earner on the bench. We don't have many choices I guess.

Why does he have to be on the bench ? If both are at the club at the start of the season then play the best GK and that for me is Pepe

Reina is going to leave next season anyway, so what's the point? It'll just make Mignolet unhappy.

So what if it makes Mignolet unhappy - we play the best gk at the end of the day and it would be up to Mignolet to ensure he is better than Pepe.

This is a difficult situation and very unfortunate as Pepe has been a great servant to the club and it would be a shame if it ended in tears.

My opinion is that Reina wanted to join Barca this summer.  His reps told Liverpool to expect an offer.
The club probably looked at his form, age and wage and thought maybe its best to find a replacement and let him leave.
Then Valdez decided to stay at Barca.
Now we're in a situation were we have our new keeper and Reina.

Mignolet is the future for us now though.
I just hope we can find a deal that is beneficial to ourselves and Reina.
Clearly, whether any of us agree or not, Mignolet is going to be our No1 keeper and we can't afford to keep Reina on the bench.
