At least make him understand he isn't world class anymore and try to convince him that we can't pay him like he is 27 anymore.
70-80 k is still alot but at least the wages has to go down.
Just seem archaic that once players gets paid 100 k/week, they can never lower that wage no matter how old they get.
Gerrard is at best 70% of the player he once was at his peak so why must the club pay him the same wage 25 years or 35 years?

It doesn't really work that way though - it might seem sound in theory but not great in practical

The problem is, while it may make some sense in theory, how could you ever present someone with a new contract for less money.
Especially after years of service and loyalty for the most part.

In any sort of employment, you just can't really decrease someone's salary and expect them to feel wanted.

He can earn his money by being a leader to the younger players and helping them improve both their play and value. It could be money well spent.

Who's Gerrard's agent? He's got one of the best players in the world on his hands, yet doesn't ever make that much money from as he's never traded, and is happy with low wages compared to others of his stature.  Poor guy  :rasp

He is the captain and arguably still our best player. He is worthy of pay that is up there with the likes of Suarez ect no matter what his age. He played more league games last season than he has for years and still looks the business when he is on it.

Steven Gerrard has warned that Liverpool will continue to struggle to attract high-quality players if they fail to qualify for the Champions League.

Striker Luis Suarez is keen to leave Anfield to play in Europe's top club competition, while the Reds also failed with a bid for Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Gerrard is doing his best to persuade Suarez to stay at Liverpool, but he concedes the situation will continue to arise if they fail to secure a top-four finish.

"I think the only person who knows what's happening is Luis himself," said the England captain. "He has a huge decision to make and, as his team-mate, I have to show him respect and give him space to make whatever decision he wants to make.

"But I think everyone knows how highly I rate him and how much I want him to stay, and what we can achieve this season basically depends on whether he stays or goes, I believe.

"While I've still got a couple of years left - and maybe a few more who knows - I have to make the most of it. And that is about adding more medals to what I already have and to leave this club in the Champions League. That is the challenge for me personally.

"It is not the same club I joined because we are not in the Champions League, so it becomes an awful lot more difficult to attract the top players.

"But I think the club's history and size - we've just been on a tour which has seen us play in front of nearly a quarter of a million people in 10 days - means the pull is still here.

"We need to break back into the top four to get back the pull we had four or five years ago when we were comfortably in the Champions League year in, year out and challenging to win it.

"Players who come and get the club back into the Champions League will experience some of the biggest nights of their career, because playing European football in front of this crowd is different to any other."

That said, happy testimonial this weekend.  :buttrock  :bowdown  :buttrock

Reported to have said he had the chance to join Bayern Munich last summer but stayed (of course)

Words for Suarez essentially but chalk and cheese really, but fingers crossed.

Sure it will be a terrific day at Anfield tomorrow.

Blimey that's a debate that goes on forever

I have him just behind Kenny and Barnes in my list.

I think he beats Barnes and Kenny. Barnes because Gerrard is much more influential all over the pitch. As for Kenny, well, probably the same reason. For me Gerrard is like the last of the very best. The new crop are raised on money, not passion. Evolution in motion.

Yes, he's done it for much longer than Barnes did so that's why I'd have him above Barnes, Kenny though is debatable.

That little incident with Chelsea just leaves a tiny mark for me and the whole Rafa/Hodgson episode with Gerrard having too much influence in regards Hodgson coming in. In terms of just playing the Souness could possibly be above him as well.

Barnes has been the player with the most ability we have ever had I think and Kenny - well he was Kenny, nobody I think will get near him
