barnes was fantastic for 3 seasons but 3 seasons doesnt make you the best player in this clubs history, dalglish was great but he was 27 when he arrived here and he joined the best team in europe, that 77 side were the european champions, the english champions and a poxy winner in an F.A cup final away from doing the treble back in the days when doubles happened twice a century.
kenny was the type of player that needed other great players around him, he wasnt a one man army like gerrard.
i`ve never seen a better liverpool player than gerrard.

It's a debate that could go on and on and I don't think there will ever be a right answer - it will all be about people's own personal opinion. I grew up watching Kenny and Co then into Barnes and Co and I haven't seen anything beat them yet.

Gerrard has been wonderful for us - amazing player that can never be doubted.

But Barnes played for us for ten years ! And certainly had more than 3 good years. And Kennys achievements and ability should never be downgraded because he was a team player - a team player that helped the team to levels that no other team will ever match.

kenny was an absolutely brilliant player but i think a lot of the worship for him was from a fanbase on the rebound, i dont think the fans ever thought we`d replace keegan. in a way it took 3 players to replace keegan, people forget that 3 months after kenny signed another all time great in graeme souness joined the club and before that season was out alan hansen was in the side too.
by about 1980 i dont even think kenny was the best player in the liverpool team, graeme souness was.

Kenny was clearly the best player in the team - he was the fulcrum for the goals we scored and was the heartbeat of the partnership with Rush - Souness did the ball winning and the drive from the middle but Kenny was the cherry on top. If he was Brazilian he would be counted alongside Pele as one of the best ever

There was no rebound - we replaced Keegan and then a step up in Kenny.

The goal in the European Cup final just summed up everything about Kenny. Not many other players could have done that let alone attempt it in such an important game. For me no one will ever match him

Barnes never did it like Gerrard did for a decade or so. As Yakka said Barnes had three great seasons (a brilliant footballer no doubt) but in the later stages of his career he piled on the pounds and was not the same player he was in '89. Gerrard on the other hand has been here longer and shone from the outset, it's only the last couple of years where Gerrard has faded naturally. The side Gerrard was part of was nothing in comparison to the early teams where Barnes was in - Gerrard like Yakka said is probably the best player Liverpool have ever had.

the people who say kenny was the best player in our team from 1980 onwards in my experience tend to be the people who never went back then, it`s like this mythology over mcmahon and molby, it makes me smile the amount of worship molby gets when for half of his career he couldnt even get in the side!
if molby was around these days turning up way overweight and half fit the fans would be doing their nut, charlie adam was like daley thompson next to molby.
mcmahon was by far the better player, infact in that late 80`s team he was probably only behind john barnes as our best player but because he`s got a personality that grates he doesnt get his proper dues.
kenny was a great player but imo no one has put in a decade of quality performances for this club like gerrard has, maybe billy liddell would have something to say about that but i never saw him play.

I think it's clear that supporters will have their own favourites - I'm certainly not going to slate Molby because he played his part in a quality team - so did McMahon , they both had their roles and they both played it to the top of their ability. Molby was a more skillful player than McMahon - he had better ability on the ball - where as McMahon was a proper engine like a Rolls Royce , very close to what Souness was like and the same with Gerrard.

And when it comes to Kenny - he was rated so highly because he was that special , both as a player and as a person and yes I did watch him back then. He was my hero and always will be, he may have played in a very strong team but he stood out in the very strong team - that says how good he was.

when torres arrived here michael robinson did a program for spanish telly where torres and arbeloa had a dinner with dalglish, souness and sammy lee.
when torres asked sammy lee who was the best player he ever played with was he pointed straight to souness and said him, and dalglish was sitting next to lee.
kenny was brilliant but the whole side was, if you stuck kenny in the teams gerrard has played in he wouldnt have had the effect gerrard has, he just wasnt that one man army type of player.

Sorry but how do you know Kenny wouldn't have just been as effective? It's impossible to judge and Gerrard "one man army" stuff is extremely disrespectful to his teammates that have helped him - he hasn't done it all on his own - he has had some outstanding teammates along the way to help him out.

Just because Sammy Lee points to Souness that doesn't mean it's the correct answer. Again there is no right or wrong answer because its personal opinions and its impossible to judge players in different time periods. But please stop trying to downgrade the achievements and effect of Kenny - that's not the right way to go to prove a point.

For the record I'll have Cally. Just a very special player of his time. You didn't need to have a replacement for Cally. He'd have played with a broken leg. 18 years at Liverpool. Never moaned. Never a scrap of trouble.857 games. 1 booking (Sh*t Luis can you believe that  ) and a shedload of medals including 2 European Cups.
