STEVEN GERRARD - Official Thread

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

i'll be the first to hold my hands up. i've been extremely critical of him this season and questioned his place in the side on form.

yesterday he was immense however. almost like the gerrard of old. he was almost alonsoesque the way he sprayed the ball around in the first half and the goal was vintage.

long may it continue.

One outstanding game doesn't mean anything, he needs to play like this on a regular basis to warrant continued selection.

This has to be seriously looked into.

Gerrard in central midfield is just not working. With our fullbacks pushed up high, the midfield 3 has to do work really hard.

But Gerrard isn't doing his part. He wants to play deep...but doesn't do the necessary defensive work.

Gerrard has never had the discipline for such a role. He has been allowed to run forward and do whatever he wants for years now. Thats when he is at his best.

The thing is ...everyone can see it. Gerrard just can't play in midfield anymore (especially in buck rodgers system). I am sure BR also knows it. Its too obvious. But does he have the "grapefruits" to move gerrard upfront ? BR can't even drop a Carra instead of a superior Coates. I just don't think he has it in him.

He deserves one because of his past exploits, not on his current abilities

Sentiment has no place in football. He is past his best and offers us only a small snippet of yester year, we cannot move forward playing with old relics.

I hope Rodgers will take a look at some videos of how Gerrard used to play and let him do that again.
I'd give Gerrard a new contract, but we should not do the same mistake we did with carragher. He should accept a pay cut on the next contract.

Gerrard is not the same player has was four or five years ago. The sooner he is replaced the better. We need someone younger who can come in and take over the mantle. Gerrard is 33 in less than six months time, it's time to replace him.

Well apparently Brendan Rodgers disagrees with you, when talking about extending Stevie's contract he says.
Rodgers said: "You look at his stats this season and he is right up there as one of the most influential midfielders in the Premier League. He's at the top in chances created, passing, possession; all the important things. I find it incredible he can have had any criticism at all. It is absolutely ridiculous. From seeing him every day working, and seeing him playing in the games, it's incredible.

"OK, he may not be getting the goals he did five or six years ago but that doesn't stop you influencing the game, and his influence for me – and especially once he was starting to understand what I'm looking for – has been absolutely top class. He has been an inspirational captain for us, he has been a huge figure in the development of this team. We are improving, we are growing, and he has influenced that."

For once I agree with Buck.

Yeah, showing just a fraction of his former form but that could be just about enough for us.
