“They will get a good contract coming here but if they want to argue over money, and other things that go around it, I don’t want them here,” said Rodgers. “In my experience those players will eventually let you down anyway. So, for us, it is about getting players in who are hungry to succeed and to pull on the shirt.
In some ways he is right, but its the top clubs like liverpool that have turned football into a game of who offers more money. We should not complain about a situation we helped create. If we are serious about getting back to the top we just have to accept that it costs a lot of money in player wages, and yes players should have a right to negotiate for their wages just as any other employee. The only other solution would be to radically change the financial aspect of the premier league and make it more about the sport again. I dont see that happening as the big clubs like liverpool would resist any change that would make the gap between the big and smaller clubs smaller.
you make a good point mate, we often forget that during our halcyon days we often spent big and blew everyone else out of the water. we are one of the clubs that helped shape this modern game where greed rules.
we often broke the british transfer record (sending transfer fee`s higher and higher), we were the first british club to have advertising on our shirts and along with spurs and everton we were one of the main clubs pushing for the formation of a breakaway premier league back in the late 80`s.
the formation of the premier league was really the end of english football as a sport, the formation of the prem was really the top 20 clubs saying to all the other clubs throughout the land`f##k you we are keeping all the money for ourselves`.
it was thatcherism meets football and the end game is being played out now - we have exorbitant ticket prices (which have by and large drove out the working class), kick off times dictated by t.v companies, stadiums that resemble shopping malls, stadiums with no atmosphere, players who`s only thought is `whats in it for me?`, parasitical agents who earn millions, billionaire owners who can turn also rans into the richest club in the world with a swipe of a pen and clubs not giving a sh1.te about the man in the street but fawning over corporate clients.
the one big positive to come out of the modern game is health and safety
