I thought it was a good game. I'm disappointed we didn't win but that what happens when you don't get shots on goal. Disappointed but not upset because that was good football just missing out on a clinical finish. We need a young Diego Forlan to slot them in and complement Suarez.

A few observations: Carra is finished, there's no way he could have coped with that tempo, good to see the likes of Kelley and Coates on the bench. Similarly with Allen being superb once again, Sterling playing out of his socks and Shelvey looking more composed month by month, either StevieG gets himself fit and fits into this formation or he'll find himself surplus to requirements by christmas. There's no room in the middle of the park for a passenger as Wee Jay found out. Enrique needs to gain 3 yards as well and adapt - quick. Similarly Pepe seems to have lost the spark, not because of the second goal but the smile has gone, the obvious enthusiasm, he looks like he's doing a job, playing for LFC is no longer the centre of his universe.

But its defo upwards and upwards, I don't give a fig we have 1 point after 3 games, we're clearly a far better team than 6 months ago, there's a clear gameplan, style and objective. Its going to take a few months to adjust but we'll get there. Downing... an odd sod if there was one, he played left back last week yet was standing in the box by himself in the last 15 minutes... what to do with that lad?

Meanwhile BR has 4 months to identify the striker who's going to slot away these great chances we're creating. And it isn't, or wasn't, Dempsey.

Since this is the Rodgers thread I'll focus less on the game and more on the man. I have to say I was excited about his appointment. He's a guy who likes to play possession football and his system is largely based on having 3 in the middle who are very good in possession (with one of the trio playing higher up and driving into the box; Sigurdson scored 7 goals), and 3 upfront who can make things happen. The first part, he got right imo. He inherited a very good crop of central midfielders including Lucas & Gerrard, and managed to improve it by adding Sahin and Allen. Further up is where he fell short imo.

As far as transfers go, I think we saw the opposite of what Kenny did. While Kenny spent a ton of money bringing in players who couldnt do the job for us, Rodgers came in and got rid (without replacing) of a bunch of players who DID do the job for us. Maxi, Kuyt, Bellamy and Carroll were all allowed to leave and in return he brought in.... Borini. So far if we are honest, he hasnt done that well in the market despite bringing in Allen.

Now for the silver lining you seem to be talking about, the primary cause for optimism is that promise of what COULD be. On paper, we have the foundation of what COULD potentially be a top4 side with the right additions. Swansea relied on 2 wide forwards who had pace, dribbling and energy and were capable of chipping in with the odd goal here and there (Sinclair had 8 and Dyer 6). Their center forward was nothing special and his main job was to stay close to the box and pounce on whatever chances that came his way.He managed 14 goals. The creativity came largely from the trio of Sigurdsson, Dyer, and Sinclair.

What we have atm is this: Downing, Sterling, Borini, J.Cole, Assaidi, and Gerrard responsible for the creative with Suarez playing further up. The problem the way i see it is that Gerrard is the only one out of the creative 3 who is good enough to start for us regularly in this setup. Suarez further up isnt a natural goalscorer and sitting in the box waiting for chances to come his way never was and never will be his game. In a way, we are 2 good players short of having an attacking quartet that are capable of both creating and scoring goals, and more importantly making the system work for Rodgers. Ideally, we'd bring in a top goalscorer to play the Graham role and a good pacey winger to play the Dyer role. That would allow Suarez to drift to the flank and Gerrard to continue in the central role. Again though, its all fantasy and until the transfers are made, we'll have to do with what we've got. And unfortunately, what we've got is a side that is ill equipped to regularly play this system with the personnel at hand. You said we are a better side and that we have a gameplan..etc Im not too sure about that. We might have a gameplan but we are struggling to successfully implement it. We struggle to create chances and we struggle to put away the little we create. Ultimately, it's all about results and unfortunately we dont have a few months worth of poor results to "get it right". Like Rodgers said, we have to make do with what we've got and try to stay competitive until the window opens again.

Which is why for me, Rodgers needs to be a bit more flexible for now until we can get our targets sorted. Being down to Arsenal at home, he persisted with the setup instead of changing it. We were struggling to create chances  and what we needed at the time was a bit more direct play to really have a go at Arsenal. We needed a plan B and it wasnt coming. I thought Borini should have been pushed upfront to support Gerrard and Suarez with Sahin making way for Downing. As it turned out, we had the wrong players (Downing, Sahin, Allen) getting the ball in the box late on rather than our forwards. Little things that we get wrong that could prove the difference between success and failure.

Exactly... adjustments will be made and fine tunings will be done. Our players will be more comfortable with the system, our defenders will know how to play without being so exposed to the counter attack. A balance will be struck and a new King shall return...

aCe, your analysis is probably quite correct and I 100% agree we have terrible striker issue up front and only when we fill that will we really see how both this formation and team can play as a unit. Its a sad endictment of where we are though as a business that BR was unable to bring even a 6 million striker in .... just how much more did T&T steal to leave us as paralysed as we are? However thats a fact and that where we are. There's too much pressure on Suarez who as you say isn't a natural goalscorer. Sterling like Suarez is all jiggery-pokery and not a goal scorer either. I can't see us getting out of this particular hole whether playing the new or the old style until the january window and splashing out on someone good (but why would they be leaving if they're Liverpool quality 'good'?) and probably we need two strikers as again you say.

Yes we're in a pickle up front but otherwise we looked pretty impressive yesterday.

Fk off should he. If he knew we wernt gonna stump up the cash for Dempsey do you think he would have let Carroll go?

I place the blame fully at FSG's feet. Time to get the SOS shouting about this again. Won't be long before fans start calling these lot yanks in the same manner as the last lot! I'm not exaggerating either. :help

Absolute rubbish. Such fans should go support Chelsea.

I don't think many of you are aware of how lucky we are to have FSG when we could have been in a much worse situation without them. They showed last season that they were willing to spend, even if it meant spending 35m on an unproven player when that price bracket should be reserved for world class players.

How we sort this mess out is simple, we force FSG out of the club. They're not here to restore us a top club in England and Europe, they're here to profiteer from the club and guess what? Without investment there can be no real way of profiteering because we don't have Champions League football and to get that we need investment in better players. It's a catch 22 for FSG and in the mean-time we fans will have to suffer.

And you know this how?   :no

You wont be saying that if the likes of Suarez or whoever ask to leave end of season after potentially a disastrous campaign.

Whether the fans are backing the manager or not, this is a results business, and the pressure will ultimately keep mounting if results don't go our way, and our league position. That's why kenny got the boot wasn't it?

Always has been, always will.

If we are not in at least the top seven come Christmas time, we won't be finishing in the top 4!

And If we do finish below 7th, FSG will terminate Mr. Rodgers Employment I'm sure. Just like KK

He won't get 2/3 seasons like Rafa did. Rafa won CL in first season. Under Rafa, we were always a top 4 side therabouts.

rafa won the CL in his first season (and got to the league cup final), won the F.A cup in his second season and got us to another CL final in his 3rd season.
rafa had the ability to work with the cards he was dealt, he didnt try to introduce new pie in sky total football philosophies overnight.
first thing he did was make us hard to beat and then developed the side from there.
rodgers has one system or way of playing and then gets players in to fit that system, that`s all well and good but it could take years to find the right players to fit the system and along the way some very good players are moved on simply because they dont suit the managers philosophy (i dont think carroll will be the only player jettisoned, i think there will be a few surprises along the way, even suarez looks like a square peg trying to fit into a round hole at the moment).
the transfer system is such a lottery that you cant afford to discard good players, discarding carroll without even trying to fit him into his side just shows what a dreamer rodgers is, carroll for all his faults is a very effective player that can give even the best defences trouble, at the top level players who can unsettle the best defences dont grow on tree`s, most experienced managers would love to have that weapon in their armoury because they know from their years in the game how hard it is to rattle good teams, rodgers the dreamer who has only been managing for 4 years discards carroll because he doesnt fit in with his 180 page theories on the game. i dont think he`s living in the real world, you can see him sitting there clueless when we are losing because he doesnt know what to do when his theories start to unravel.
i think if you gave rafa a squad with the likes of suarez, carroll, sterling, sahin, gerrard, lucas, allen, agger, skrtel, johnson etc he`d not only get us in the top 4 we`d be having a good crack at winning the CL the following year and i`m being serious. especially if he had owners that backed him and gave him a few quid.
i think rodgers is being too ambitious, he seems a bit of an idealist to me oblivious to the harsh realities of the game, swansea was probably the worst place for an idealist like him to go because he recieved high praise even when they lost, up at the top of the game one thing counts and thats results.
look at the headlines in the papers today - rodgers bodgers, rodgered etc, the bookies have even made him second favourite to get the sack after southamptons nigel atkins, it`s tough at the top and i`m not sure the top of the game is a place for dreamers and idealists, i think it`s a place for hard bitten pragmatists.
could you have seen that farce that happened during the transfer window occur with rafa in charge?
rodgers is a very likable fella and an inspiring speaker, most of the time he`s been here he has been talking waffle and contradicting himself all the time but it`s actually inspiring to listen to! i think there`s a great manager in there but i think we have brought him in 5 years too early, i think he`s still got some lessons to learn about football management.

Liverpool FC Analysis: Transfer trouble are striking the wrong chord at Anfield

WE know all about striking transfer squabbles here on Merseyside.

The difference is they usually take place across the park.

The most successful manager in Everton’s history once quit because his board wouldn’t hand him funds for Dion Dublin.
Another iconic centre-forward was sold behind Walter Smith’s back because his board had let him spend money the club didn’t have.

While Joe Royle became another managerial casualty when his board refused to add a makeweight by the name of Claus Eftevaag to a bid for Tore Andre Flo.

But Anfield?

Home of a club which spent £57m on strikers in the January transfer window?

A club whose cloth-cutting exercises are proudly conducted behind closed doors?

This was uncharted territory for the Reds. At least it was until Friday night.

Because this time a Liverpool manager appears to have been bowled a googly by his boardroom.

Brendan Rodgers chose his words carefully – and diplomatically – yesterday in the wake of the Reds’ failure to land Clint Dempsey after allowing Andy Carroll to leave on-loan.

He insisted he most definitely had not been “misled” by Liverpool’s owners. He hinted that “operational” procedures simply needed ironing out in the wake of Liverpool’s failure to land Clint Dempsey.

And he suggested that the whole situation was part of a “learning process” for boardroom and boss.

But in amongst his diplomacy, the articulate replies and the placatory manner, the most telling answers came in two one word answers.

Asked would he have let Andy Carroll go if he knew he wouldn’t get a replacement, he replied: “No.”

Asked how confident he was that he had a deal for a replacement sewn up, he added: “Very.”

Clearly something was lost in transatlantic translation on Friday night, and Rodgers has been left to pick up the pieces.

It wasn’t pretty.

Liverpool mustered just eight shots on target yesterday, most of them after Arsenal had already taken a 2-0 lead.

One of the two senior strikers Rodgers was left with was so ineffective he was hauled off with 37 minutes to go.
And all around there was the sound of silence.

That was the most depressing aspect of a thoroughly miserable afternoon.

It was only a few weeks ago that Rodgers proudly declared: “Now we have one of the most passionate sets of supporters in the world. So my experiences here are passion and support and those are the things that stick out. These are educated supporters and they understand football.”

Those educated fans were grimly silent for most of the afternoon, and as a board heralding four minutes of time added on was held aloft great swathes of empty seats could be seen all around the ground.

The lack of penetration, the lack of clinical finishing was glaring.

It wasn’t until Stewart Downing – a breath of fresh air when he came on as a right winger – and Jonjo Shelvey, another impressive substitute, were introduced that Liverpool mounted any kind of meaningful pressure.

But they were the only forward options left available to Rodgers on a substitutes’ bench largely populated by defenders.

Prior to their arrival the responsibility for firing shots at Vito Mannone’s goal fell once again on the shoulders of Luis Suarez – and the little Uruguayan clearly needs support.

Just nine days before the transfer window closed Rodgers declared: “I need a minimum of three strikers. Once the window shuts, that is it until January. I have got Luis Suarez, Fabio Borini and Andy.

“I would need to be a nutcase to even consider at this moment to let Carroll go out, unless there are other solutions for that. At the moment there isn’t.”

The Reds boss is clearly no nutcase.

Yet he still let Andy Carroll go, which suggests another solution had presented itself.

That solution clearly wasn’t to leave himself with only two senior strikers to negotiate three competitions for the next four months – a minimum of 25 matches and a maximum of 27 according to Rodgers yesterday.

So we have to assume the Reds boss believed he would be recruiting a new forward to his squad, notably one who had scored 17 league goals last season and at 29 was in the prime of his career.

Clint Dempsey even wanted to come.

But it seems that the enthusiasm of the player and the manager wasn’t matched by the men who sign the cheques – and the legacy of that decision was all around Anfield yesterday. We can only hope that both parties have learned from the experience.

Across the park striking transfer squabbles always ended with one party or the other exiting the club.

This time the impasse has come early enough in Rodgers’ reign for both parties to move on from the problem.

But it could be a long four months between now and when the club can do something about addressing the situation.

FFS Where do people get this from regarding Carroll?  Do you honestly think that BR's has to play him in the team before he can judge his ability and whether he can fit into his system?

If that is the case then shouldnt he have to play every other single fringe player?  Why are you not complaining on how Adam wasnt given a chance in the team?  What about Spearing?  Why was he let go without getting a run in the team?

This is top level management.  BR's and his coaching staff will have watched Carroll in training every single day and will have assessed Carroll down to a tee in pre-season just like they did with spearing and Adam!  After this they decided that these 3 were not a good fit.

You dont need to put players in the team before deciding to sell them.  Thats totally unrealistic and a very simplistic view of management!

Seriously what do you think BR and the coaching staff do on the training field??

he was talking about carroll moving on before carroll was even back of holiday so i dont know how you can say he assessed him in training, his mind was already made up.
that reeks of an inexperienced dogmatic manager who doesnt live in the real world.
a good manager in my eyes takes a bit of time to see what he has got at the club and to assess his options, rodgers has tried to change to things too quickly and now here we are with the double whammy of our worst start to a league campaign in 50 years and a farcical end to the transfer window that has made him and the club a laughing stock throughout football.
we as liverpool fans may be saying the owners stitched him up but i had the radio on before and the panel of experts to a man were all saying rodgers had all summer to sort out his squad and what happened on friday is just rank bad management.
anyway looking at us pumping high balls into a five foot seven CF on sunday i do wonder what is going on at our training ground.

It's an impression that I've been getting all summer long. Who appoints a manager and then doesn't back him in the transfer market? Who tells him he has to sell-to-buy? Who doesn't sanction money for Rodgers to sign players and then sacks Ian Ayre for failing to bring in Clint Dempsey and then writes a half-hearted letter to us supporters pulling yet more wool over our eyes? Fenway Sports Group that's who. In fact this reminds me of our previous owners, who lied, who promised what they couldn't deliver, who blamed the Chief Executive, the manager, the kit man and the tea ladies. FSG's words have not matched their actions and until this changes, I will not view them in a very positive light.

Those educated fans were grimly silent for most of the afternoon, and as a board heralding four minutes of time added on was held aloft great swathes of empty seats could be seen all around the ground.

I believe the 'grimly silence' of fans had an affect on the teams performance against Arsenal. Personally, I thought it was atrocious the way our fans sat in silence and watched the team they supported huff and puff all afternoon. The only noise that did come from the crowd were sighs when a pass was misplaced. Liverpool would have had more support playing at Goodison that afternoon, such was the absent support around the terraces at Anfield.

That was bad IMO, the last thing this young new team needed was 40,000 people turning up with an anxious attitude because of something the board failed to deliver in the transfer window. Regardless of the incompetencies of the board the last thing our team needed was a cold and miserable crowd who couldn't take their minds off of this saga and support the lads who are here and now playing for the red shirt. Sorry, but I thought it was a disgrace and only supported Arsenal's want in getting 3 points.

YNWA - my arse. That side on Sunday DID walk alone...
Champions of England 2020.
