cue the "what about Rafa" numbheads...
I like Rodgers but I think if Redknapp was available he would have gotten the job and rightfully so. My biggest worry when it comes to Rodgers is his lack of experience at the top level. He made a few mistakes already in the transfer market and his interactions with the media (especially regarding the Carroll issue) have been at times embarrassing. Tactically, he has a vision of where he wants the club to be but until we have the players to implement that system we need him to show a bit of flexibility. To be honest, i find his lack of a backup plan a bit worrying and perhaps yet another sign of a manager facing a rather steep learning curve.
Unlike many, I'm sure that he will -sooner rather than later- compromise on his preferred 4-3-3 to try and play to the players' strengths rather than his own. Eventually, we'll hopefully have the right personnel to allow him to do what he does best which is COACH the players to play a possession based 4-3-3.
i think people are so overawed by all this `we`ll play the same way as barcelona` line that they cant see the wood for the tree`s.
even if rodgers is the real deal in graham hunters book about barcelona he said it took the catalan giants 16 years, a huge amount of money (spent on big signings), an incredible scouting system and a brilliant academy full of visionary coaches to be where they are today, and that is a club that no player turns down.
how long is it going to take here with a novice manager, financially prudent owners and a club that is struggling to attract the top players?
it`s not just a question of playing that system it`s perfecting it, even barcelona took some right hammerings along the way.
i`ve no doubt rodgers will have us eventually playing some cod version of barca`s style somewhere along the way but i think we`ll end up a paper tiger like swansea, all style no substance.
rodgers has had 4 jobs, he was sacked at reading and at watford he managed to get to 13th in the league after spending half the season in the bottom 3.
even at swansea, he took over a team that finished 7th the year before and took them up via the play off`s, neil warnocks QPR won the division and lamberts norwich finished second. he didnt improve them that much and even the much vaunted playing style was already there, it was martinez who brought that to swansea.
this isnt ancient history this is the last 4 years.
he`s a likable fella and he wants to play footy the right way but managing liverpool is no job for a novice manager, he`s made a lot of mistakes imo, i think he went about the carroll situation the wrong way, he gave mixed messages out regarding the future of some of our star players like agger and skrtel, he came out with that overly negative statement about it taking us 4 years to get into the CL, he had all summer to sort out our squad and the goalscoring problem (we are actually worse off! takes some doing that) and in a few of the early games he looks like a rabbit in the headlights when we are losing, he looks like he hasnt got a clue what to do when plan A isnt working. now he`s now got the press on his back.
he`s got a hell of a job on his hands.
