STEVEN GERRARD - Official Thread

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Seems his infection came from a cut sustained in last Fridays training session. Seems odd that he could pick up an infection from a small cut?

The cast is standard procedure for infections that have been drained. It prevents movement and any aggregation that could cause further swelling. Next 48 hours could be crucial.

That said assuming he misses Swansea and the two internationals. Chelsea on the 20th is still realistic, I'd be very worried if infection is still an issue three weeks later

I know he is an icon but the club needs to protect itself when it comes to Gerrard and not give him any longer contracts or pay raises. It's not that he doesn't want to contribute but his body can't take it anymore.

When he does get back to fitness he REALLY needs to jib the England appearances. His body appears to be already telling him it's finding it harder to compete at the top level.

This maybe explains our continued interest in various central midfielders according to the press.

Glad your not my boss mate! Regardless of injuries he is one of the few players that actually deserves what he is paid and for that reason the club will continue to look after him.He has been an amazing player for LFC and it is more than a tad annoying when people like yourself are looking for ways to almost screw him over. Show a bit of respect please.

Actually I agree. Steven Gerrard will always be shown respect but I doubt very much he will be given any sort of long term contract extension or pay rise in the near future.

It makes no financial sense to throw money at a player who cannot contribute. Pay rises and contract renegotiations come from a position of power, Gerrard is in no position of power.

That said, he hasn't asked for a pay rise or a contract extension.  Gerrard will finish his career here no doubt.

Definitely... He needs to retire from England in order to prolong his career.

Infection from a cut? Does he have diabetes? Didn't he get infection from his groin surgery as well? Sounds worrying. Normally it's hard to get infection from a small cut if you wash the wound properly unless one is very negligent...

If that is all I would be thrilled with the outcome (of course I would have prefered him not to be injured but you get my drift). Given the recent rumours and all it is hard to believe that is all (though I realise you should not always give that much weight to such rumours).

It is a little worrying, but i'm sure he will be fine. I'll be happy if he retires from international football now. The other thing is (for the longer term now) that management need to start looking at playing systems that will work without Gerrard, don't get me wrong, he still has a few years to go and i'm grateful for that, but as he seems to be prone to injury and infections now, it is better to get an idea of all possible systems to play with the new signings. We done well up to now without him (Suarez et al), but we don't want to over rely on Gerrard as has been the case in recent times. Maybe a good time to start on his coaching badges.

On another note, infections from a cut, Bob Marley hurt a toe while playing football. The wound became infected and as a result turned cancerous......

Should the worst case scenario occur (God I hope it doesn't :( ) & Gerrard does not return to his best & continues to struggle with injuries, maybe he should retire from international football & focus on finishing his career with another trophy or two for his club!. Just imagine if a newly fit Gerrard went to play a worthless friendly for England & comes back injured, out for another 6 months.
