Is anyone really surprised?  I just dont buy all this 'bring back the glory days' talk.  These people dont know about Liverpool FC and they are looking to buy LFC on the cheap and turn a profit.  Simple as that. I dont expect a new stadium either.

Questions for RedSoxfan:

1. Do you like these guys?
2. Have they put significant investment into your club?
3. Have they increased the debt on your club?
4. How visible are they on a day to day basis?
5. Do you think they are there for the long-term?

Cheers.

1. I LOVE them. I'm 47, and they are by far the best owners/managers we've had in my lifetime.

2. Yes, lots of investment. We can count on them to be #2, 3 or 4 in payroll among the 30 MLB teams. And they generally make prudent and calculated decisions. They are not afraid to go after superstars, but they set a certain value level and do not go past it. For example, they have lost out to the NY Yankees for two premier players in recent years because they refused to spend a dime more than the huge offers they had already made -- and then the Yankees took advantage and spent the extra from their bottomless pit of money. On the other hand, they completely outmaneuvered NY for a Japanese star in a unique bidding system the Japanese have. And they are extremely good at finding decent low-cost talent to shore up the back end of a team, and they are among the 2 or 3 best at finding and teaching young talent.

3. Honestly, it's a bit hard to lose money these days in MLB due to the current rules, unless you are a complete idiot (and Hicks had to just sell off his Texas club -- case in point). That said, they have made Boston a money-making machine. They are the #2 valued club in the league, though Boston is only about the 10th biggest market these days. They have sponsors for everything, the stadium is covered in ads done (somewhat) tastefully. and their NESN sports channel is very profitable.

4. They are visible enough, but not meddlesome. The owners do not badger the manager Terry Francona to do certain tactics, etc. But they tend to be at most of the games and often give press releases. They are considered good citizens in the community.

5. They will likely own the Red Sox for decades. My completely uninformed guess is that they are planning to own Liverpool for 10+ years too. They are building this NESV piece by piece, and my projection is that they will add another team or two to the fold (NBA? NFL? F1?...) when the price is right, and they will also be teams with long histories too. I think they are aiming for a massive global marketing/moneymaking machine. In other words, they will say to Honda someday "We own the world's top football club, top baseball club, top racing team, and top NBA team. We can deliver 2 billion fans to you. Give us all your global ad money, and we'll bring the Reds and Red Sox to Japan on tours."

I know that I sound like a cheerleader, but Henry and his group are really a great fit for you. The key is who they pick to head the football operation in Liverpool, since the Americans don't know the game. If they stumble with that pick, you fans will get more angry. But they are very smart, and have a good heart. So short-term you can be guaranteed that they will find a way to make money, spend money and improve your fan experience (stadium, media coverage, etc.). Expect them to be in the top 5-6 in spending in the PL, lagging behind the insane spenders but above everyone else. And eventually, once they learn what they're doing, they will fine-tune the football management to become among the savviest in the world at it.

You will be hard-pressed to find better. So you should start praying that this deal happens.

Following up on my last post about the ways NESV makes money, is innovative, and cares about the fans/players...

They put a hockey rink inside Fenway this winter, letting companies rent the ice to host parties, then hosted the NHL Winter Classic game and a few college and high school games. This is a cool time-lapse video showing the process: http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/console?catid=0&id=54660

And this is the process of setting up Fenway for this summer's football game between Sporting and Celtic (they had to alter the field in the MIDDLE of baseball season, then tear it up again for the Red Sox immediately after): http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=10287413

And on the last weekend of the season, they held a ceremony to retire Mike Lowell, a good player for them for 2 years but not very effective in these last two due to hobbling injuries. He was the 2007 World Series MVP, a class person, and the team wanted to give the fans a chance to cheer him on in a special way. http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=12746599

I'd expect they'll do these types of things for your club too.

Dear Sirs,

According to reports in The Sunday Times, it is claimed that US Hedge Fund Mill Financial - an arm of Springfield Financial Company, has joined forces with Tom Hicks to try and prevent the sale of Liverpool Football Club to New England Sports Ventures, by attempting to raise cash to repay the owners debts to the Royal Bank of Scotland by the 15th of October deadline.

We write to inform you that if your company assists Tom Hicks in retaining his share in Liverpool Football Club, then the only return that you will see on your investment is bad publicity and a severe backlash from Liverpool supporters worldwide, as Michael Whitman the Senior Managing Director at the Blackstone Group will testify.

http://online.wsj.com/article....84.html

You are facing an energized, well-informed mass of Liverpool fans from around the world. We are tapped into a constant stream of information on the ownership situation. Every day, dozens of web forums buzz with the latest news. Protest marches, newspaper advertisements, boycotts and billboards are organized. Every move Hicks makes is scrutinized. And every associate of his is warned.

Refinancing is our nightmare scenario. Anybody who helps Tom Hicks refinance will become our primary target.

Yours sincerely,
HE WHO BETRAYS WILL ALWAYS WALK ALONE

I dont think NESV will be our new owners the preditors are stalking us out if we go into admin, we could get taken over by anyone.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

Kenny Dalglish 1/2/2011
