Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

redsoxfan wrote:Hello everyone, I've been a Boston Red Sox fan my whole life and I thought I might give you some insight about John Henry. :)

Overall, he is a fabulous owner. The Red Sox have the #2 payroll in baseball. He is not afraid to spend money...but he doesn't spend money like a drunk sailor. His General Manager Theo Epstein is always trying to get the most value for the money. Since Henry's group has taken over, the Red Sox have become a powerhouse and won 2 World Series (2004 and 2007) after not winning one since 1918. They are usually in the baseball postseason playoffs, and only missed by a bit this year because the team was decimated by injuries.

The stadium is Fenway Park, the oldest in baseball, built in 1912.  There was a lot of talk about building a new park, but they decided to revitalize Fenway. Lots of new concessions, bathrooms, etc. The Red Sox currently have the longest sellout streak in history at over 500 games in a row.

Henry's a very good man, a little quirky, but nice. He apparently is quite rich - a self-made made who is an expert at stock trading. Not only does his group own the Red Sox, but they have the very profitable regional cable New England Sports Network (NESN) and own a stake in one of America's top Nascar racing companies (very popular in the southern US, not so much here in Boston).

Speaking honestly, I think you'll be happy with him if these rumors are true. Your only reservations should be 1) who will run the football operation, as I don't think he's a football expert, 2) the Red Sox have the highest ticket prices in Major League Baseball - will the same be true at Liverpool, and 3) does he have enough money to match the insane owners that are in the Premier League?

Overall though, he's a good businessman, very smart. His co-owner is Tom Werner who made his money in television (owned the Cosby Show, Roseanne and others). The President is Larry Lucchino, a very savvy baseball man. And the rest of their management team is great too. They are considered to be in the top echelon of owners in baseball.

If you want to investigate, here are some good links:

The Fenway Group: http://www.fenwaysportsgroup.com/

And here's a long interview with him in 2004 which can introduce you to him: http://www.charlierose.com/view/interview/1113

I confess to only knowing a little about football. I follow the Premier League a bit but am a child in terms of knowledge. But I am aware of your frustration with your current owners. I just wanted to reassure you all that Henry and his group would certainly seem to be an improvement. They are liked by 95% of the fans here, which isn't easy, as the Red Sox are rabidly followed and critiqued, arguably as much as their famous and more historically successful rival the New York Yankees.

Good luck. I'll drop by again soon.  :)

thankyou sir

Squad.

Right now putting a new stadium before squad investment would be akin to "putting lipstick on a pig"

Yes we do, but you can't blame others for being skeptical about the new ones mate, I'm staying skeptical on this one, if they clear the debts and start building a new stadium while improving the team, I think everyone would be happy.

But, anything better than the sh!t we had!

From what I understand, should they take over, then the clubs debts will be cleared and H & G walk away with sod all. For me, thats a start, and im all for it. I dont want us to turn into another man city and blow 100 million on players.

Clearing the debts and getting us stable surely is the priority.

Can't compete with no money. We'll end up mid table if we dont at least have some significant funds to spend, so I'm a bit wary of these taking over.

im pretty sure if what ive been reading is correct, there is very minimal profit for the previous owners as most of what is being offered would be used to clear the debts?

and since Red Sox have the highest tix prices in the MLB, and should the apply the same format to LFC, would having a bigger stadium seen redundant as it will not be filled anyway (depending on the tix prices IF there is a change).

i might be a little short sighted here but i rather see the investment being thrown into the first team as it would be appealing to a potentially new manager should we get one next season. the stadium can wait.

DIC where 5 minutes away from owning us 3 years ago, lets hope this one goes the same way and someone richer comes in.

good call.

i am not that happy about them, what i was told sometime ago is that they only have the money to be a 3rd party, now you got to ask where the rest of the money has come from to buy us, are they going to justr by the club and take over the loan.

anyway looks like Hicks could still take it to court to block the sale.

But thats where we are now. What profit we are making is being spent on the loans. At least with no debt the profit would go into the team. Like I say, its much better than what we currently have. At this minute in time the saying "beggars cant be choosers" applies to us. We are a mess.

Liverpool fans may be wary of another American owner, but in John W Henry they have a very different breed to Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

The quiet, reserved 61-year-old made his fortune in hedge funds, but has used it to indulge his sporting interests, most famously with the Boston Red Sox baseball team, but also in the NASCAR motorsport series.

The self-made multi-millionaire does not have the serious money of the Premier League's wealthiest owners, with his fortune rated at US dollars 860 million (£540m) before dipping in the credit crunch but he does have an excellent track record of success with his teams.

the article goes on, but call me greedy or what ever, but he just doesn't have enough money to buy the club, clear the debt and build a stadium!

Well, he isn't the only one, its a firm that is going to own us, not Henry, surely the firm has more than 800 million dollars?

I just want the debts, that we were saddled with by the crooks G & H, cleared then it would be more honourable to rebuild using the finances generated by the club and it's achievements...we made a profit last year dispite the poor showing on the field....It's our world wide appeal that helps to finance our club and with a little initial investment for players and a commitement to either build a new stadium or redevelop Anfield itself to house more fans, I'm convinced we can move forward with our chins held high....I don't want to be seen as a copy of the Man City blueprint or Chelsea for that matter...

I do hope that the new owners look to Christian Purslow as a possible man for the job of over-seeing Liverpool's rise from the Gillette and Hicks debacle.

all being played out in the press is just further embarassment to us.

The board releasing statements that the owners are trying to get rid of 2 of them.
the owners releasing statements saying no offers made are acceptable to them.
the board releasing a statement saying offer has been accepted subject to legal battle with owners.

They are both throwing punches to each other via the world wide media Im really embarressed and ashamed by it all.

What does this Redsox owner want with us anyway?
I have zero trust in him already we have already heard the dreaded words of FRANCHISE once again  :no

What an anti-climax this has turned out to be.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

i think that was when there was a bigger price tag on the club though surely? - so right now they need less money to buy us than they did 6 months ago. I dont know if the premier league would sanction another takeover where they just take over the loan - they'd have to significantly reduce it i think for the take over to go through
