Use social media to rail against U.S. ownership

It's a new era of protest in the socialistic realm of club soccer.

Although fans have never been shy about unfurling banners, singing antagonizing songs and organizing marches and ticket boycotts, the Internet has provided an entirely new platform for spreading the word and getting the message across.

This became especially apparent as supporters of Liverpool FC prepared for today's demonstration against the club's American owners -- Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr.

With the club falling further and further into debt and risking a takeover by the banks, the fans unleashed a full-out barrage on the pair, rallying sympathizers around the world to participate in the protest in some capacity.

In New York City, a Liverpool fan held up a derogatory sign as he waited for Hicks outside a major bank. Hicks, the fan found out from Twitter, was attempting to refinance the club's debt, buy out Gillett and assume full ownership before the banks foreclosed. Within a matter of hours, the bank executives were being bombarded with emails from other Liverpool fans, pleading with them to reject Hicks' proposal.

Emailing bank bosses seems to have become the weapon of choice for disgruntled Liverpool supporters. Hicks and Gillett have until Oct.15 to repay their £237-million debt ($384-M Cdn)to the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), and Hicks is frantically searching for new financing as the deadline approaches. If he and Gillett cannot take the club out of debt by then, the RBS will be forced to take control of Liverpool.

With that in mind, the Spirit of Shankly group -- a supporters union named after the legendary Liverpool manager and founded with the sole purpose of ousting Hicks and Gillett -- published the mailing and email addresses of RBS Managing Director Richard Holliday, and is encouraging its members to contact him and voice their opposition to Hicks' intentions.

While the contact information is available on the Spirit of Shankly website, it has also been posted on a blog belonging to one of Liverpool's biggest daily newspapers. For any Liverpool fan with a bee in his bonnet, effective protest is just a click away.

Spirit of Shankly has also used its website to mobilize protesters ahead of today's match. It advises fans to "make their feelings known towards the ownership, using banners, flags and songs," and encourages them to remain in the stadium after the match for a sit in.

The union doesn't publicize the names or numbers of its membership, but its Facebook page -- which carries the same messages as its website -- has over 33,000 followers.

The email campaign has already been something of a success, as at least one bank recently admitted to having considered the displeasure of Liverpool fans before deciding against financing Hicks.

But Hicks and Gillett have shown no signs of surrender, despite their unpopularity. And that begs the question: Can email and social networking sites actually topple an ownership regime? Can fans, using technology as their primary vehicle for opposition, affect change at the highest levels of professional sports?

It sure would be something. A new era indeed.

I don't thinkit was a pre-requisite that the bloke we got in didn't "kick off", but it is quite refreshing to see the ownership issue not used as an excuse every time we lose.

You know if the lads had been putting some great dsplays in so far this season I would have agreed with that but the truth is that performances havnt improved since Roy came in, a great number of our 1st team squad are still underperforming, and in the case of players lke Babel have somehow managed to get worse, which having watched the lad at times last season I wouldnt have thought possble. I stll maintain that it was Benitez distractions off the pitch that ultimately lead to last seasons vast underachievement - I couldnt see how his focus could be maintained when he was butting heads with the board room every 10mins. Whether players are sharing these distractions is a matter for debate, personally I think the players focus should be on playing and not whats going on in the upper echelons of the club as long as they get their handsome paycheck every Friday.

We're going to find out an awful lot today come 5pm when we see how the management and players respond to the last weeks results and heavy criticism. Hopefully Roy will show some positivity and a willingness to adapt his tactics that in most of our eyes havn't been working thusfar

I cannot be bothered to work out which it is, because I think much more important is the connundrum of why our fans would slavishly lap up the words of a journalist who says we limped to surrender when we came back from 2-0 down and eventually got done 3-2. How the feck can you limp to surrender when you get done 3-2? Answers on a postcard.

How the feck can you praise up such a journalist and then accuse me of rejecting it because it doesn't "represent my train of thought".

I reject it because it is sh!t, and I support Liverpool so resent people talking sh!t about my team, not for any other reason.
