Why RBS looks set to own Liverpool FC
Robert Peston | 08:43 UK time, Thursday, 23 September 2010

For those interested in owning Liverpool FC, the important calculation is this one: do they want to pay a premium and buy the club and business now, for something between £420m and £600m, or do they want to wait until it is in the hands of its banks, in the hope of securing Liverpool for more-or-less the £280m value of its bank debt (which includes £40m of penalty fees)?

Many would say that harsh commercial logic dictates only one answer.

With the 15 October deadline looming for Royal Bank of Scotland, Liverpool's main creditor, to decide whether to take control of the club, most bidders would surely prefer to wait for the fire sale.

Which is why it looks increasingly likely that Liverpool will - before too long - be the property of Royal Bank of Scotland and the US bank Wachovia (which provided around 25% of the bank debt).

There remain big imponderables, however.

One is whether Royal Bank of Scotland can take control without the business falling into administration - which would lead to a nine-point deduction for Liverpool to its Premier League tally (and, right now, would leave it with an interesting minus four points, which is a bit surreal).

As I understand it, lawyers are beavering away on behalf of RBS to investigate whether the bank can take control while avoiding administration.

Also, for the avoidance of doubt, RBS wants to own Liverpool like Superman craves kryptonite. If, in mid-October, RBS does end up formally in charge, its plan would be pass the club on to a new owner as quickly as humanly possible.

Finally, here's where those figures of £420m to £600m come from for the price tag if you want to buy Liverpool before the fire sale:
• £600m is what the two US owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett would like for the bank debt and their equity. It would value their equity at more than £300m, providing them with a handsome profit.
• £420m would recoup for Hicks and Gillett the £140m odd they've put into Liverpool's holding company, Kop Holdings, via their Cayman Islands vehicle. It would, in essence, give them their money back without a profit.

There may be some Liverpool supporters who feel it is worth paying Messrs Hicks and Gillett somewhere between £140m and £320m to spare Liverpool FC the humiliation of falling into the clutches of its banks - although the evidence of the fans' blogs and websites appears to be that most supporters would in fact rather stick pins in their eyes before handing a profit to the US duo.

I doubt, however, that any of those supporters have a spare £500m lying about that they don't need right now. Which is why it's a pretty fair bet that RBS will end up owning Liverpool (for a bit).

If (and it's a BIG IF) the lawyers can negotiate a clause that means we don't go into administration as a result of the bank taking us over then me it sounds like the best route for us now is to fall into the hands of RBS.

- Yanks would be out by default
- Price to buy club would drop
- LFC would be more attractive to potential buyers

However the worry for me is; would the existing board (who I believe have the interests of the club at heart) remain in place and be able to negotiate a deal with a prospective buyer or would, as it reads on the article, it literally become a fire sale whereby RBS would take the best price from anyone. Then we end up getting sold to some f*ckin idiot like the ones who have bought Pompey over the past 2-3 years  ???

I believe the new "fit and proper owners test" initiated and overseen by the Premier League was introduced to prevent another Portsmouth.

Whether the test goes far enough is another question but it will at least scrutinise the owners and provide some transparency.

But it looks like someone has took it up. I'm not sure whether it was my exact idea but it certainly looks like it could of been. I had a response from Kyle Percy thanking me for my suggestion and inviting me to a meeting.

Good on ya Roberto!

According to a person familiar with the incident, the younger Mr. Hicks spotted Mr. Eljarrah—identifiable in his red-and-white Liverpool scarf—and told a nearby cop: "This guy is trouble."

As the police officer intercepted Mr. Eljarrah, he says, he waved his sign and yelled, "Get out of our club!"

Thats what you want to read isnt it? Someone trying keep control of the club and referring to a fan of the club he is trying to keep hold of as "trouble".

PS: Yes I know its the younger one but he would be re-employed if daddy did get to keep his mitts on us.

PPS: Mr. Eljarrah deserves a free season ticket for what he has done. Outstanding protest and dedication to the spirit of LFC.

I don't know but people are now contacting more news outlets in America, one in Dallas particularly doesn't like Hicks so that would be a good start ;). And it seems emails are being sent to sky and bbc to make them aware, check out RAWK if you want to find out the details.

lets not get our hopes too high. they might have other sources who may be dumb enough to give them a loan. alot of focus has been on the American and European banks. what about the ones in Asia? those buggers might have connections there.

JUST READ THIS FROM SOS

.

Tomorrow should be a game where we are looking to get back on track on the pitch. Instead, we will be fighting for our Club, to get it back on track in the boardroom. We, as supporters, have a duty to protect the future of our Football Club. Tomorrow is the continuance of a campaign to fulfil that duty. During, and after the Sunderland game we will protest.

Today we have seen and heard what the manager has had to say about protests. Our message remains as clear as ever - we will do what we feel is necessary. As supporters we don't want to be protesting. We want to be talking football not finance, we want to be talking left backs not leveraged buyouts.

Instead, circumstances dictate that we must do all of this - the protesting, the campaigning, the pushing to have new owners. Over three years ago, this "group of people" were watching new signings such as Torres and Mascherano, looking forward to a 'spade in the ground' in 60 days that would see us with a brand new stadium, competing with the best in the world, and built in time for Jamie Carragher's testimonial.

This "group of people" has over 50,000 people supporting what it is trying to achieve, with countless more supporting the campaign for new owners. We are very much anti owner for one clear and unequivocal reason - they have lied.

This "group of people" will protest and will continue to protest, because we have a bond, an unbreakable one with our Football Club. We can't just walk away. This Football Club is part of who we are, it's part of who our parents and grandparents are and were, and it's part of who our children will be. It's an emotional attachment that cannot be ridden roughshod over by businessmen in the pursuit of greed rather than glory. It's an emotional attachment that means we will do whatever it takes, regardless of whether it makes things more difficult or not, to save our Football Club.

This "group of people" will always support the position of Liverpool manager. We will continue to demand that the resources of the Football Club are directed towards assisting him in his job rather than being squandered on servicing unsustainable and unnecessary levels of debt.

The protests will continue. To those who say it affects the team performance, our argument is simple and honest - massive debts, crippling interest repayments and lying owners are what is affecting the team. If you don't believe us, read the accounts. Or ask the players who have recently spoken of the need for new owners. Or better still, ask Roy Hodgson.

It's our duty, our responsibility, and our desire to bring about change at our Football Club. To rid it of men with no honesty, no integrity and no concern for the Club's future. Tomorrow, we will carry out that duty.

I've just spent the best part of the last hour messaging people the email list to send out. I'm doing my bit :D
All round the fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and could he play!)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
'Bout the glory, round the Fields of Anfield Road

TOTALLY,TOTALLY, WITH YOU NAN, as i said in the puslow thread, that interview he gave on LFC TV sumed it up for me, he is a fecking tw1t & tw@t puppet! he has no "passion" for the club, he's in it for what he can get & the sooner the club is sold, the sooner we get rid of filth like him aswell!

i can't wait to see what happens tomorrow in alot of ways,i sincerly hope that the lifeline of our club the ones that really matter & that have real, true "passion" for the club ie - the fans & the players both shine & make a statement on & off the pitch to get our season & future back  where it belongs!
