Blackburn Rovers close to £300m takeover
Blackburn Rovers have moved a step closer to a £300 million takeover that could transform the club’s fortunes after entering formal takeover negotiations with Western Gulf Advisory, a Bahrain-Swiss-based investment company.

As exclusively revealed by The Daily Telegraph last week, WGA’s owner, Ahsan Ali Syed, has targeted the club as part of a broad strategy of investing in the UK.
On Monday WGA will begin a four-week exclusive negotiation period with the club and their owners, the trustees of Jack Walker’s estate, which is expected to conclude in a full takeover.
Under the deal WGA will clear the club’s debts of around £20 million, pay the trustees a consideration for their equity and invest in players, the club academy and other infrastructure “so it can become a title contender once again”.
It is unclear whether the deal will release immediate funds for Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce to spend on new players before the transfer window closes at the end of this month, but in the medium term he will be guaranteed funds to spend.
In a statement confirming its interest, the company said: “WGA will explore the financial situation of the club. Over this four-week period WGA has been granted exclusivity which means no other bidder can buy the club or look into Blackburn’s books.
“WGA has earmarked approximately £300 million to acquire the club, cover its outstanding debts and provide the necessary capital to buy new players and invest over the longer term so it can once again become a title contender.”
Syed has targeted Blackburn because he believes the club represent a better investment, and have more potential, than Liverpool, their North-West neighbours involved in a fraught sales process.
The Indian-born magnate is understood to have looked at Liverpool but decided against becoming involved.
WGA will use internal company money to fund the takeover at Ewood Park rather than relying on external investors, a factor that gave it a decisive edge over Saurin Shah, another Indian businessman who had expressed an interest.
The club have effectively been for sale for two years after the Walker estate made clear that it was no longer in a position to underwrite the club indefinitely.
Steel magnate Walker bankrolled the club to the 1994-95 Premier League title and — under the terms of a 1987 settlement — his family trust undertook to continue investing in the club. That money has now dried up and chairman John Williams has been leading the search for new investment.
The promise of such a wealthy new owner would transform Blackburn’s prospects and lift them from the annual struggle to remain in the upper half of the Premier League and to balance the books.
Last season the club made a loss of £6.5 million on turnover of £50.9 million, largely because of a wage bill that accounted for 90 per cent of revenue. Despite this, Williams predicted Blackburn would return to being a “trading” club rather than a “net seller”. With a takeover imminent that now looks to be assured.

Would they make such an announcement on a Friday night? I suppose it would be a big morale boost going into Sunday knowing we have been sold.

The Liverpool FC Board has reviewed a number of proposed bids for the club at a meeting held today.
The Board will continue to act in the best interests of Liverpool Football Club and its supporters, doing all that it can to ensure that the Club is ultimately sold to a buyer who has the resources and real commitment to give it a long-term, stable and secure funding position for its plans.
The sale process is continuing. However, its timing and outcome remain uncertain. In the meantime, we will not comment on rumour and speculation.
