The Irish Times - Friday, August 6, 2010
Liverpool seek proof and intent
ANDY HUNTER at Anfield

ENGLISH PREMIERSHIP: LIVERPOOL HAVE told all prospective owners to prove they have the funds and intent to buy the club from Tom Hicks and George Gillett as they attempt to conclude a takeover before the transfer window closes.

At least four different parties have reaffirmed an interest in buying the club in the last week but none, as yet, has made an official offer to buy a club €421 million in debt and needing a new stadium. Kenny Huang, the businessman believed to have secured backing from the China Investment Corporation, has held talks with those conducting the sale and hopes to win majority approval from the Anfield board to usurp Hicks and Gillett as owners next week.

Yahya Kirdi, a Syrian former footballer with business connections in Canada, has claimed to be in advanced negotiations with Gillett. The Rhone Group, a private equity firm based in New York, and the Kuwaiti billionaire Nasser al-Kharafi have also returned to the process. Yet no one has made the first formal move to gain control.

Any recommended investor will be subject to the Premier League’s new owners and directors test – the prospect of the Chinese government buying Liverpool will not be a problem for the league, it is understood – but Anfield officials are anxious their choice has the resources to fund long-term aims, not simply buy the debt from the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Huang made his interest known through RBS rather than the American owners, who cannot prevent a sale if outvoted by their fellow directors Martin Broughton, the Liverpool chairman, the managing director Christian Purslow and the commercial director Ian Ayre.

Gillett has reopened talks with Kirdi, but the board’s criteria will be to sell to the party who can prove they can clear the debt and attract the backing required to build the stadium on Stanley Park.

While there has been dialogue between Huang and Liverpool the talks have not reached a stage where the club are certain of his backers’ identity. The Chinese approach appears the most likely to succeed, although Liverpool will still be under American ownership by the time their league season begins on August 15th. The Premier League requires 10 days notice before any takeover can be completed.

I have just read through the last few pages. And the irony is very amusing. With regards to lakes, it takes no effort at all to jump on the guys back. If he puts up something that is something that he has heard, he is shot down. He is ridiculed, he is mocked, he is taken for a joke and yet anyone else on any other forum who puts up what they have heard are posted on here. It is taken as gospel, lakes knows nothing yet on the other forums, they know more. They are important, they have "contacts" or as the press are fond of "sources".

Talking of press, do any of you lot look back after ridiculing lakes for his rumours, then post up a journalists opinion, and still feel justified in your criticism?

This thread is full of utter cack. In fact it belongs in the rumour mill bit as a lot of what is posted here are just rumours. And what will happen when new owners come in? A new thread will be created, Benny has already started a "what if" one.

FFS, please keep the anti-china sentiment to yourself. Typical westerners always enjoy imposing your ideologies on other countries and cultures... look at the mirror first before criticising.

I don't give an F what happens in their country's social system as long as Liverpool is run better than what the 2 American idiots are doing now. It's all about football and finances.
Anyways, rumours surface, rumours squashed... let's just sit and wait and like what SOS says, keep the pressure up on RBS to force T&T to sell.

Lakes, go away please. That has NOTHING to do with football. Check the tags on your clothes and give them to oxfam if they're made in China..... Nah, didn't think you'd do it. For the sake of being controversial, deary me get a life!
Football is a relatively simple game and Roy knows it ;)

Wow. That has to be the most ignorant post of the year. On any forum, anywhere in the world.

Lakes is more annoying than Bono

Liverpool have told potential bidders for the club that they have until the middle of next week to prove they have the cash. The Times has also learnt more details about the leading bid, backed by the Chinese Government.

Martin Broughton, the Liverpool chairman, set the deadline yesterday. The club could change ownership as quickly as next Friday with the consortium fronted by Kenny Huang, the Hong Kong-based entrepreneur, remaining in pole position.

China Investment Capital (CIC), the investment arm of the Chinese Government, holds a significant stake in the bid, as revealed by The Times yesterday. It has now emerged that the man responsible for raising cash for the Chinese consortium is Dr Yang Guang, the executive vice-president of Franklin Templeton Investments, one of the largest global investment fund groups.

The New York-based Guang has acquired finance from a number of sources, including significant investment from banking institutions, but CIC would hold the majority stake in any takeover. However, CIC will not invest directly in the Merseyside club, but into a new company created specifically to push the deal through.
Guang joined QSL Sports Limited, Huang’s company, in May and has been a conduit for Chinese investment in the West since the early 1990s. The Harvard-educated financier has strong links with the Chinese Government.

Despite reports to the contrary yesterday, CIC has not denied its involvement in the Liverpool bid. Officials at China’s investment fund have assessed the business plans for the club and believe that CIC will make a considerable profit by pumping money into Anfield.

The decision to attempt to invest in Liverpool was taken purely on money-making potential and sources close to the deal were keen to distinguish CIC’s intentions from the takeovers at Chelsea and Manchester City, which came down to the decisions of rich individuals — Roman Abramovich and Sheihk Mansour respectively — to buy the clubs.

Unlike the owners of Chelsea and City, CIC would have little input in the day-to-day running of the club. Decision-making at Anfield would be left to executives with extensive experience in the Premier League, with new positions created to exploit Far Eastern markets.

Huang has already told Barclays Capital (BarCap), the investment bank brokering the sale, the Premier League and Broughton that he has the backing of CIC. BarCap needs proof that bidders are good for the £300 million plus required to buy the club before they can pass through to a final round of the auction.

Supporter reaction to the idea of Chinese-led ownership was generally favourable yesterday, with the majority of fans keen to see the back of Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr, the present co-owners.

The two other bids that remained on the table yesterday are thought to be from the private equity group, Rhône Capital, and the billionaire al-Kharafi family of Kuwait.
Further pressure was heaped on Hicks and Gillett to finalise a swift sale when an American court ruled yesterday that Hicks’s creditors can attempt to seize his assets.

The judge handling the bankruptcy of Hicks’s baseball team, the Texas Rangers, said lenders — who are still owed $525 million after the Texan defaulted on loans — can pursue his other companies for the money. One of the Rangers’ creditors is Alex Rodríguez, the former player and the youngest baseball player to hit 600 home runs.

I rest my case.

Lakes is annoying with his rumours followed by a published rumour.

For gods sake give me strength.

right i just wanted to put something straight regarding this.

and i'm not saying i agree with any of it in the slitest

but the pics you have posted up there of the executions are not just for nothing, i have seen these pics before and they where executed for DRUG trafficking which is punishable by death in there country and at the end of the day they know if they get caught this is what will happen.

i do not know why they like to do it in public but they do!!

again the first lot of pics you put up i have seen before and come with a lot more pics, lots showing huge crowds watching the traffickers being shot, i'm not sure how true it is but i was told they sale tickets for this??

i just wanted to say that so that people didn't think those were for people just speaking out, as you said

I was not going to post anymore about it but your post stands out and i feel i must say something about it.

yes most are for DRUG trafficking ...well thats what they report them for, but in most cases its for doing something a lot smaller like using the internet or sending a letter , our talking bad about someone, if the real reason was given all the time then the world world be even more on their backs.
the say its for DRUG trafficking but its not, one pic of a lady that was shot is about her standing up for the Tibet, the line of men with cards were killed for saying words about the deaths in Tibet.

yes i would love our club to have money buy it will leave a bad taste to were that money has come from.
