LIVERPOOL FC owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett appear to have lost control at Anfield – even before the likely sale of the club before the end of this month.

The unpopular Americans are unlikely to have the final word on who replaces them in the hot-seat as club owners, the Daily Post can reveal.

Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton is understood to have received assurances from both Hicks and Gillett that they will not stand in the way of his recommendation for new owner.

The Americans will accede to the wishes of Broughton as long as he has the joint backing of the remaining two board members, managing director Christian Purslow and commercial director Ian Ayre.

In reality, their three board votes would defeat the Americans’ two, if they took a joint stance.

That appears to make it ever clearer that Hicks and Gillett lost full control at Anfield as soon as Mr Broughton arrived on the board in April this year with a remit to sell the club.

It has always been denied that Mr Broughton was appointed at the behest of Liverpool’s chief creditors, Royal Bank of Scotland, but what is clear is that they are fully behind the sale process being overseen by the British Airways chairman.

A source familiar with the situation said he enjoys the “confidence” of RBS.

Six bidders are being analysed by Mr Broughton and his team to see which offers the best long-term deal for the club.

One of those is Chinese businessman Kenny Huang, who is offering around £325m – far short of the £600m-plus price tag the Americans would like to sell for.

The club has a total debt of around £350m, with £237m of that owed to RBS. Any successful offer from Mr Huang is likely to have to involve paying off the total debts.

Yesterday, more details of Mr Huang’s business dealings emerged.

Widespread reports that he owns 15% in the NBA basketball side Cleveland Cavaliers are wide of the mark, but he is heavily involved in the commercial rights and advertising in China's National Basketball League.

His company, QSL Sports Limited, also has the “exclusive contract to promote, reform and manage NBL in collaboration with the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA)”.

It is not believed a deal on LFC is imminent as the due diligence process being overseen by Mr Broughton is not straightforward.

He has made it clear it is not simply a matter of accepting the highest bid, but rather assessing who is involved in the different consortiums, where the money is coming from, how much is being borrowed, and how much cash will be available for players and the crucial new stadium.

Do we want to open that can of worms? If we do we will be going around in circles all day.

The USA 65 years ago this week, dropped TWO atomic bombs on Japan and neutralised 60,000 Japanese (mainly civilians) in one go. And lets not go there with Iraq and Afghanistan and sweat shops.

And Britians Human Rights, protects terrorists, Peadofiles and murderers.

Guys lets be clinical here. Why do you think the Chinese are buying LFC when they have a 1.5 BILLION people home market?

They want to learn the model from the inside.

They want to learn how the best league in the world operates, how the top clubs operate, how teh media operates, how teh media rights are handled.

They want to learn how UEFA works, how CL works, how clubs prepare differently for cups compared to leagues, how teh media rights are handled.

In 5-7 years time they will create their own leagues, their own CL then their league will be the big money spinner and the EPL will revert to equal status with the other european leagues.

The Chineses aren´t buying LFC because they like Torres or Gerrard, or because they like our city.... they´re here to learn, suck us dry then go back and replicate it back home. Can you imagine with a 1.5 BILLION people market!

Wow, that is a conspiracy theory.

They'd virtually have to become a democratic society to do that. Media you say...

BTW they already have their own "Champions League" in Oceania.
Football is a relatively simple game and Roy knows it ;)

I dont think so mate because the letters to RBS were saying 'T&T are bad owners, sell the club'.

A letter to Purslow would be too specific 'sell to kenny' when we as fans, outside the process have no idea how suitable any of the bidders are etc... and we could just make fools of ourselves.

Its no conspiracy its common sense!  Theres 1.5 billion chinese with improving disposable income, its a no brainer, learn how european footy works then go home and replicate it!

And if in the meantime we get a 70,000 seater stadium, a squad to win the league again and a coupla' more CL´s then god bless the Chinese!  :buttrock

The Chinese are just like T&T, they have to sell before they can buy!

I thought these guys were RICH?

that's what worries me slightly. I look at Pompy and all of their 'rich' owners who took over, and now look at them.

I'm not saying it's the case here, but we have to be careful.

There was an article posted up that indicated a very high percentage of CIC reserves are tied up in low risk, low yield assets, companies, businesses, resources etc. So they may not be as CASH rich as you'd like but they have an awful lot of money.

The more I read about the Chinese idea the better it looks - even more so it seems it's the bid that Broughton Ayres and Purslow like and the Syrian bid is only liked by the yanks and the only reason is because it gives them profit - three people like the Chinese bid because it looks good for the club - trying not to get ahead of myself but all the noise is pointing towards a vote in the board wih the Chinese winning - great news if that happens .

Reg I think the Chinese bid come about due to us being twinned with Shanghai theres all sorts of representation of Liverpool happening now to do with Shanghai World Expro 2010, not sure if you have read up about it but it attracted over 400,000 visitors.

"Liverpool was a must, not only because it is twinned with Shanghai, but also for its place in maritime activity past and present, important architecture, and major contribution to our country's music and sporting scenes.”
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

REST IN PEACE PHIL, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.

Take this statement here and apply it to everything that has (and will be) been written on the subject in the last 48 hours.

Luckily for me i'm off to Turkey on Monday coz I don't think I can handle another 2 days glued to the SSN/Internet and this place!

Mate, I can't imagine for one minute that there will be a deal on the table from the Syrians that give Hicks/Gillette a profit and that that will gazumped by one from the Chinese that gives no profit. I suspect  the two c...u...n...t...s will get their money no matter what. Still, at least it will be no where near the amount they were originally hoping for.

Indian billionaires Mukesh Ambani, Subrata Roy pitch for Liverpool Football Club ownership

The battle for Liverpool Football Club’s ownership became hotter on Thursday with Indian billionaires Mukesh Ambani and Subrata Roy jumping into the fray to buy Liverpool.

Mukesh Ambani, who owns Reliance Industries Ltd, India’s largest company by market capitalization, and Subrata Roy who owns Sahara Group that sponsored the Indian cricket team, have submitted their bids to buy the team, popular tabloid The S*n reported.

The move comes nine months after their reported failure to buy a 51 percent stake in the Anfield outfit, which Ambani had denied.

Indian billionaires will now face the Chinese government in the battle to buy the Reds, joining at least four other interested buyers including Chinese sports tycoon Kenny Huang.

Huang, who is backed by the $332-billion Chinese Investment Corporation, held talks to buy Liverpool’s $286 million debt off Royal Bank of Scotland and Wachovia.

However, the report said Huang, who is backing the new Reds boss Roy Hodgson with a $180 million transfer kitty, has emerged as the favorite to replace unpopular Yank owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

The Anfield auction is now wide open, the report said.

"Some potential buyers have declared their interest but haven't tabled a bid, whereas Ambani and Roy have put their money on the table. At this stage Liverpool are happy to let everyone compete against each other to squeeze out the best possible deal," the report quoted an unnamed insider as saying

Ambani, 53, was buoyed by the success as a franchise owner of a cricket team in India that played at the popular annual cricket tourney Indian Premier League. He is valued at around $19.86 billion and is rated India's richest man.

Ambani's fellow billionaire Roy, 62, is head of Sahara Group, a sprawling conglomerate worth more than $7.94 billion, who is also sponsoring the Indian hockey team. He won the franchise bid recently to own another cricket team that will play in the next year's Indian Premier League cricket tournament.

Hicks and Gillett valued Reds at $963.46 billion after Huang's interest emerged.

Meanwhile, new Reds boss Roy Hodgson insists he would be more disappointed if his old chairman Mohamed Fayed had not put the boot in when he left Fulham, the report said.

The report also quoted Fayed as saying that he will take Liverpool downhill to which Hodgson was quoted as saying: "His comments were pretty jocular. I'd have been disappointed if he said 'we didn't want him anyway'. It's more flattering than if he'd said 'who cares'."
