Liverpool's major creditor, Royal Bank of Scotland, on Monday denied they were in talks with a Chinese businessman over the sale of the Premier League club.

But a source close to Chinese businessman Kenny Huang told Reuters talks to buy Liverpool's 237 million pound ($374.7 million) debt with RBS were under way as a first step towards a purchase deal for the 18-times English champions.

British media have widely reported that Huang, a Guangdong-born U.S. citizen who already has interests in Chinese baseball and U.S. basketball, had approached the bank as part of a scheme to eventually acquire control of the club.

But an RBS spokesman told Reuters: "We are not in talks with any bidder about the sale of Liverpool football club."

Asked about the denial, the source insisted Huang wanted to buy the Anfield club, who were put up for sale by unpopular American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett in April.

Huang, chairman of the Hong Kong-based QSL Sports Group, has not commented on the deal but appointed a British media relations firm to represent his interest in the five-times European champions.

Liverpool's owners, who bought the club in February 2007 from former owner David Moores for 218.9 million pounds, instructed Barclays Capital to find a buyer in April and appointed British Airways chief Martin Broughton as chairman to oversee the sale.

Barclays Capital refused comment on Monday.

The American duo have faced intense criticism and hostility from Liverpool fans, with frequent demands for their removal, after loading the club with huge debts.

Huang issued a statement in March denying comments attributed to him in the British media about the future of then Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez but declining comment on his interest in purchasing the club.

He also owns a minority share in the U.S. basketball team Cleveland Cavaliers.

Media reports have linked Syrian businessman and former international footballer Yahya Kirdi with a deal for Liverpool, who suffered a dismal campaign last season, finishing in seventh place and missing out on a lucrative Champions League spot.

I suspect at least 5 of those bids are spoof ones from the Tex@n Tw@t who's had Plan B ready for a few months.

The first bid comes in just like on eBay, the Tex@n Tw@t throws in a couple of spoof ones to run up the price.

Broughton should be able to sort the serious ones out from the likes of me and 7 Kewll fairly quick though.... :eyebrow

we've had so many false downs in regards to takeover and i'm not getting sucked in until its done and dusted. Hope this is all true, but not believing anything until its offical.

According to the BBC it's not his money he's using but the Chinese Government's. He represents various Gov't owned investment companies.

Looks like they've back-doored G&H and I wouldn't give the other mysterious bidders a cat in hells chance against the Chinese. Can't see them putting up with anything less than us being Champions again. Could be a great move for us.

Can't quite believe there are 6 bids on the table considering the quotes coming out of Broughton's mouth only a couple of weeks ago. Great if it's true but I really can't see it somehow.

WE ARE LIVERPOOL FC.. this ain't know joke club scotty.. we are a worldwide phenomenon, I believe there will have been at east 6 bids.. when it was announced last month that the club hoped to finalise this situation before the close of the transfer window.. I sensed something was bubbling...

lets hope now that we get the right owners.. it won't be a bidding war, it will be about whose plans fit with the club and city's hopes.. Player investment, new stadium - leased by the city council as part of their contribution to the regeneration of the Anfield area.

Lets hope Huang buys the debit, then tells G+H to repay it. They cant he gets the club for free and they walk with nothing.......I can dream

Your probably right there Reg. 6 genuine bids does seem excessive for such an expensive club.

Our fate lies in the hands of a Chelsea season ticket holder.

Huang is a clever little bloke ent he.

He was actually linked with us about 5 months ago but he 'denied' it. He has obviously waited until now on purpose because he knows RBS are the ones who call the shots now so he doesnt have to meet the yanks' massive asking price.

I dont see why RBS wont accept this. Its a win-win sitution for Huang and RBS. RBS get the debt they are owed, Huang gets the club and is owed £270 odd Million by them two. So really the only ones getting f.ucked in this deal are the yanks

The one thing that I worry about though is that the whole thing about 'RBS being the people who now decide who buys the club' might have been another lie by the yanks just to keep us a bit more quiet. If the descision is down to them then they will obviously reject the bid because it's miles off their asking price.

Its quite bizarre that the Americans put such a monster price tag on the club in the notion that somehow an idiot would knock on the door and pay it. Its obvious that any interested party would wait until the last possible moment and deal with RBS once they call in the loan and take control of the situation. Quite frankly you wonder how these two ever managed to gain control in the first instance and how on earth the powers that be fell for their :censored:

and bull story. Its almost beyond the realms of possibilty, however depsite all of that it does now appear we are close to a resolution that will hopefully see the football club moving in another direction.

Saw that earlier. Could all be a PR stunt nan, but to be honest I don't know enough about this guy to make a judgment. Hopefully Broughton has an idea though.
