Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Reg » Thu Jul 01, 2010 10:41 pm

LFC2007 what I was insinuating is that the hint of a lower sale price might tempt a local buyer to come into the market who had previously been put off by the image of competing with cash rich Arabs, Indians or Chinese, ie its an open market again, thats all.

That said, we also need to consider the global economic situation: I get a number of reports ona  daily basis and this one today is fairly reflective of why people dont want to buy a cash draining football club:
"The stock and general financial markets have finally succumbed to the pressures of the next down leg, confirming the corrective nature of the preceding move that took us to the recent highs. In terms of fundamental drivers, the Eurozone unsurprisingly remains at the eye of the storm, with the ECB announcing plans to bring an end to the special financing programme put in place a year ago. The removal of this vital source of liquidity is seen as something of an acid test for European banks. Liquidity support has been in place in some form or other for a long time now, and questions remain as to the market’s ability to survive without it. Despite reports that only EUR132bn was taken at the ECB’s latest auction for 3 month funds (vs. EUR300bn expected), risks clearly remain for the Eurozone and the banks operating within it.

These ongoing risks bring us conveniently to another key driver of asset prices at the moment: China. Sovereign credit risks in the Eurozone have made any move in benchmark EUR interest rates untenable for the time being at least. This draws capital to economies experiencing faster rates of growth, particularly those economies with fixed exchange rates like China. Continued capital inflows into China will result in increased foreign exchange reserves, a good portion of which will end up back in European and US bond markets, which in turn will keep interest rates relatively low in these markets.

If Eurozone economies are going to be as fiscally austere over the next few years as they claim they will be, the US will represent the only real demand for Chinese exports. Sustainabilty here relies on the activity of the US consumer."

Europe is trying to reduce defecits and curt back, as a result liquidity is affected. Lower bank liquidity, less money for borrowers. The above also mentions bank industry risk (of failure??) so again, its not a time for buying football clubs from either borrower or lenders point of view.

I wouldnt be surprised to see LFC swing round Hicks' neck for some time to come, not because he cant get 800 million, but because there is simply no one out there........  Lets hope LFC breaks him......

Fair enough, reg. I suppose by reiterating the point that a deal is dependent on a long-term commitment to the team, stadium, surrounding area etc.. and not just how much cash they offer, could have the effect of drawing in local buyers. It sounded like a pretty rudimentary comment to me, though.

BTW, if Hicks and Gillett can't block the sale of the club then I presume that the final say on whether - and to who - the club is sold is either entirely in the hands of the banks; or that together with the banks, the owners agreed a price range for BARCAP to work within, leaving Broughton - as overseer - to have the final say?

Picture a company in receivership, the executor decides the sale value and the split of the proceeds. From what I understand the formula is very simple, T&T will recover the physical money they have invested, the debt will be reduced to a manageable 100 million so whatever the combined value of that investmnent plus debt reduction is = the sale price.

Right, according to Broughton, it'll be the board (T&T occupy two positions from six) who decide and they are committed to accepting "any reasonable offer" for the club, once of course the auction is complete. That's a clarification I was glad to hear. It means that Gillet and Hicks cannot hold up the sale of the club and surely means we'll be sold by the end of the year if the sales process Broughton outlined is anything to go by.

Agreed, as long as someone comes forward able to raise the finance and risk the current financial downturn and worrisome outlook and willing to put a proposal to the board.

It also means that the interested parties - are expected t tabel bids and the sale is expected.

This is important news.

Its nothing new though, Broughton stated that when he was first appointed - by BarCap, not H&G.

We know that the club has been up for sale for nearly three years . We know that there has always been interested buyers at the right price . We now know that the club is more or less in informal administration . Now is the time for the supporters to be pushing to havea stake in the club . July 4th will be the offical launch of a supporters trust , with the sole intention of fan ownership of LFC . Do not let any other :censored: being spouted by rumour mongers or the media distract you from the truth of what is really going on at our club .

Wow the timing?

A few days before the 4th? Message says nothing at all stop trying to hoodwink us it wont work. Clearly there is no one interested if there was why appoint Roy? a new board will want thier own man? Which means more :censored:.

Option one.

New owners come in, roy is a dead man walking limping us home for a season all the time waiting for the bullet from our new rich owners.

Option 2

No one buys us and Roy can try and do his best with limted funds.

Option 3

New owners are more or less in place ALA the 15th and they wanted Roy in.

I will go for option 2

Sorry, pinched this from RAWK. Pretty much sums up how any negotiations would have gone with Hicks and other interested parties - http://www.xtranormal.com/watch/6729257/ :D

FFS There are people here writing-off Roy Hodgson before a
team's been picked !!!

Jesus H - Give the guy a chance.
I was just a lad at the time
but I'm friggin sure me Dad didn'tknow much about Shanks
when he signed and I didn't think for a minute that Bob Paisley
was going to be as successful as he was when he took over.

You never know with these things but to be writing Roy off at
this stage is absolutely stupid.
