No bids yet, reveals Broughton

July 1, 2010

Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton has admitted that the club have received no bids as yet but he is hoping interested parties will be submitting their initial offers later this month.

Liverpool are currently in limbo as they search for a buyer, with co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett desperate to sell the club.

"There have not been any offers at this stage,'' he said. "There haven't been any offers to turn down and I wouldn't have expected there to have been at this stage. There are a number of interested parties but there's no specific deadline on it.

"We are looking to the middle of July-ish for the first round of bids but that's not a final stage - that's a first entry through. We're hopeful - and I wouldn't put it any stronger than that - that a deal can be done by the end of the transfer season.

"That was always from the outset a hope rather than necessarily an expectation, because these things can take time. We are on course, pretty well, with where we would have expected to be.''

Hicks had been quoted as suggesting the asking price for the club could be as high as £800 million and they would hold out for the best offer. However, Broughton revealed they could not veto a sale and no acceptable figure had been set to sell.

"The process is well under way. The owners have stepped aside, stepped down. I'm overseeing the process and Barclays Capital are running the process,'' he added. "The owners can't block the sale of the club. I read all too frequently numbers being floated about in the media, normally associated with Tom Hicks' name. I would like to make it clear there is no number. There is no base line.

"This is a willing buyer, willing seller auction. We will do a deal with what we consider to be the best bidder. The best bidder may not be the highest bidder. It's about more than just money. It's about stadium development, the team and the whole piece. Once we've been through the process, the best bidder gets it.''

Shows you that ALL and ANY talk of buyers in the frame is untrue. His message is targetted at reassuring any vaguely interested potential buyer, its not a progress statement to fans for example.

But i believe without a shadow of a doubt.

Broughton has the majority on the board, H&G cant block him. The price tag on LFC is 330 million quid. First person to offer that, gets the club. H&G say they've put 140 million cash of their own money into the club, the debt is 280m. H&H will get their 140 back and the debt will be reduced to 100mio, ie repay 180 of proper, recognisable debt. 140 + 180 = 340 million asking price. RBS/BarCap have decided H&G will not make a penny out of their aquisition.

The problem is Sandra, NO ONE , repeat NO ONE is talking to the club. The club has NO potential buyers. No Indian, Chinaman or Arab. hence the Fan Share scheme is trying to push ahead. Apparantly the financial chaos has frightened everyone away.

THIS IS WHAT ME AND REG ARE REFERRING TO . POSTED A WEEK AGO. Seems its spot on

I like these comments. These are the things I want to hear.

Do I believe them?

Well we can't know anything for sure, but to be honest I do - I've heard/read this several times before and it appears to make sense. I'm not saying that Broughton isn't using his role to line players like Yossi or Torres up with Chelsea, I think he probably is but I still think the above quotes are true. And if they, it's a very good thing.

Also, watched the Hodgson interview - clear simple thinking, calm and intelligent. I think we could have done worse TBH. It's certainly good to have a manager again. He said he was meeting Stevie and Carra today. Stevie knows he underperformed last season - if he can inspire him to stay and get him back to his best, keep most of our other players ( I think we'll loose Masch and keep Torres) we could improve next season.

I reckon he just gave as honest an assessment of the situation as possible: nobody has yet bid; he hopes they'll receive a first round of bids in mid-July; there are no guarantees as to when it will finally be sold but they hope it's done by the end of the transfer window.

Which leaves me feeling very cautiously optimistic.

So do I mate however reading between the lines, my belief is they are trying to encourage parties who 'would like' to be owners but dont think they have the capability because of loud mouth Hicks. What he´s saying is, come talk to us and if you're the right kind of owner, this is a better risk for the banks than an Indian/Chinaman or Arab. I dont think the banks want to sell out to non-football cultured people, they´ve just had a very bad experience with H&G and the next one could run the club into the ground.

My hunch is those comments you highlight are for smaller British would-be buyers to step forward, restore the football culture. The banks will sell for the GBP 330/340 million already mentioned and then give further soft loans to build the stadium.

British owners take note: this is your opportunity to buy into LFC at a fraction of what those idiots offered the Glazers to buy MUFC.

Buy at a discounted price, steady the ship then after 3 years float off 40% to the fans to repay the cost of the stadium and Bad Bobs your uncle, Ciggy´s yer aunt and the club is viable again.

Broughton is not a bad man, he´s prepared to give someone an excellent deal - we just need to make sure its the RIGHT person who steps up and not another conman. In other words NOT Purslow fronting another leveraged buy out with MidOcean partners.

All you're doing is repeating his words, behind them there is a message and thats what you have to decifer. Whats he actualky saying? what signal is he sending out. If he hadnt said we was expécting a proposal by mid-july it would be THE most dpressing statement possible! Ever seen a poker player mid hand admit he's got feck all? :eyebrow

Hope your right about that Reg, really think you might be.

I think we need to continue to press via SOS until all the above is achieved, I'll be interested to hear the details of their credit union scheme.

He clarified three things for everyone; that nobody had submitted a bid, that they were looking at receiving initial offers in mid-July, and that the owners couldn't block the sales process. He also reiterated a message he has previously made and that is that he is looking for the right buyer - who may not necessarily be the highest bidder. There's no hidden meaning to decipher and there is certainly nothing to imply from these comments that he's trying to specifically tempt a British owner. Nothing at all.
