Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Either Moores and Parry were :censored:wits at valuing the club at only £220 million last year or Hicks and Gillet are insane to value it at over £400 million now. How in the hell can it have doubled in value in one year, especially when it is now loaded with debt, I don't understand that. It's also especially weird since the economy of Uk and America is just about to enter a recession.
I think this deal will go through, why would Hicks and Gillet not sell? I can guarantee that if they don't then the club will be worth a hell of a lot less in a few years time when we are fighting a relegation battle and about to go into receivership.

Our job is simple, to support the club, not just parts of the club that are easy to support, but every one who plays a part, that includes ALL players.  We are stronger when we are all walking in the same direction. Walk On

Premier League - DIC deny deadline on Reds deal
Eurosport - Tue, 04 Mar 12:34:00 2008
Dubai International Capital have denied a "timeline" has been put on any offer for Liverpool.

More StoriesLiverpool team page
The company's spokesperson Jehad Saleh refused to comment on reports DIC have tabled a £400 million bid for the club.

However, Saleh insisted reports DIC had given Liverpool co-owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks a deadline of midnight on Tuesday night to accept an offer were not correct.

She said: "No figures have been (publicly) mentioned, and talks are ongoing. No timeline has been set on the talks."

DIC chief executive Sameer al-Ansari, a lifelong Liverpool fan, had earlier confirmed he is in talks with Gillett and Tom Hicks.

Saleh refused to confirm that Al-Ansari is currently speaking to both Gillett and Hicks, but revealed he was in Dubai.

Reports on Merseyside claimed the deadline had been imposed on Hicks and Gillett to accept the bid.

The offer would give the American businessmen a profit of £25 million each on their investment in the club.

The reported bid follows confirmation from DIC, the investment arm of the Maktoum royal family, that talks had taken place between the various parties but were being held up by the valuation of the club by one of Hicks or Gillett.

"It's no secret that we have been in discussions with the current owners," said Al-Ansari.

"It's not easy because the owners are in dreamland about valuations at the moment."

Al-Ansari later clarified that one of the club's owners "had come out of dreamland", without giving further details.

Other reports indicate Hicks, who has insisted he is opposed to a sale, has been trying to raise the capital necessary to buy out his partner.

But Hicks has described such speculation as "premature".

The US tycoons are believed to have suffered a breakdown in their relationship since taking over Liverpool last year.

The offer was reportedly made to the pair by Amanda Staveley, a senior partner of London-based investment firm PCP and who represents DIC.

Only last week, Texan billionaire Hicks denied reports he had invited DIC to inspect the club's accounts in preparation for a takeover.

Frustrated by Hicks' stance, DIC turned their attention to Gillett, who is thought to be much keener on a sale.

However, neither of the co-owners is able to cut and run without the other's consent, a point Hicks was at pains to make last week when he told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram: "Not only am I not going to sell, my partner cannot sell without my approval."

Also, DIC are thought to want a controlling stake at Anfield, meaning they would need to convince Hicks to relinquish part of his 50% of the club as well as buying out Gillett.

It appears clear the main problem preventing a takeover is the price DIC are willing to pay.

It has been nowhere near the amount of money Hicks has been asking for - he would want to make a substantial sum out of selling the club.

Another hurdle to overcome is that the refinancing package announced on January 25 has loaded £105 million of debt on to the club.

Of that, £60 million is earmarked to kick-start the new stadium development plus £45 million for future player transfers and to meet the club's working capital needs.

The takeover talk is being driven by the refinancing deal, believed to only last for 18 months, and so Hicks and Gillett are soon going to have to start renegotiating the debts.

Furthermore, they are shortly going to have to go back to the banks to ask for a further £300 million in loans to finance the rest of the new stadium at Stanley Park.

I don't know why people struggle with this concept, but just to reiterate.

Once one legitimate news source runs with a story, many other legitimate news sources then tend to run with a report quoting them.

Example, this from Metro...

"The £400m (offer for the English club was turned down, a source involved with the negotiations told the Associated Press."

And this from MSNBC...

"Liverpool co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr. have rejected Dubai International Capital’s bid for the Premier League club, The Associated Press has learned."

The fact that a million news outlets run with this doesn't make it any more true, it just means that they've read the AP piece as well. In fact, the reason they go out of their way to attribute the source of the "news" is a way of distancing themselves from it in case it turns out to be b*llocks.

The Press Association and Reuters haven't touched it incidentally, which is normally a good yardstick for an unsourced quote. They'll be all over this story, and the fact that they're ignoring AP's "scoop" leads me to believe that they don't trust the source.

Oh, and here's a bit from SSN's coverage...

"However, reports now suggest that Gillett and Hicks - who took over at Anfield in February 2007 - have rejected the approach."

They're making no claims to the news being true, they're just reporting the fact that it's been reported elsewhere. The avoidance of quoting AP is a common trait of all the Murdoch news outlets incidentally - they often go out of their way to avoid mentioning any of their rivals by name.

Setanta Sports:

Liverpool co-owner Tom Hicks says he HAS NOT formally rejected an offer from DIC.

But remains unwilling to sell.

My heads banging.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

From PA (which is where Setanta will have got it from)...

Liverpool co-owner Tom Hicks has not formally rejected an offer from Dubai
International Capital but remains unwilling to sell his share in the club, a
source close to the American has told PA Sport.

If you read my post, the report doesn't reiterate previous reports. It is a DIC spopkesman saying that an offer has not been rejected, and that DIC have not imposed any time limits.

No struggling with concepts at my end. :rasp
