Hart had a good tournament to. I thought Terry was okay (Italy apart), and Johnson had a good tournament. Other than that, the rest of the team were s.*i*e and ARE sub-standard players.

Gerrard played very well in the three group games but I think he was knackered last night. He disappeared in early into the second half.

Finally, England has a worthy captain...pity it took this long before he got the nod, full time.

Now get rested lad, there's a new season on its way....

For me...looking at gerrard's performance as a CM...i just don't think he can cut it there at the top most level. Don't get me wrong. I am not saying he is awful there. He is just extremely average when he plays there.

Every team england played against in the euros were controlling the midfield. Even with parker alongside him......

In fact gerrard only looked awesome when he moved to the right flank. Just look at all his assists. All of them came from the right flank.

If he just lowers his ego and opts to play in our right wing, we would have a great player next season. If he sulks and insists to play in the centre...we can expect average performances from him.

Just my take.

I'm a bit disappointed that Stevie seems to be going to continue his England career (maybe not to the point of Benny :p )  .  In order for him to play in CM he really needs outlets to make cutting passes to.  Something that was completely devoid in the England squad.  Milner, Young, Parker and Welbeck, were awful for England so it really was a man alone on an island for Gerrard.  The tactics also didn't help him much either.  Asking a 32 year old to be the driving force offensively and also asking him to be a large defensive presence in front of the back four was unfair to him.

I'm not saying he should have no defensive responsibility, but as shown, the dual responsibility ended up being far too much for him.  There have been suggestions that as he ages he should be moved deeper (deep lying playmaker, even some daft suggestions that he could be made into a Center half).  For me I think he should actually be moved further up the pitch.  let him play as a CF, a free role like Suarez would probably suit him best at the advanced stage of his career.

I won't celebrate Rafa going........ but I will be over the moon if Dalglish comes in. League within 2 years if he gets the job, AND YOU CAN QUOTE ME ON THAT.

I agree good yank, he should be allowed a free role behind the striker, which i think has always been his best position.
But i think we all know with Roy's strict 4-4-2 policy it's not going to happen.

Does Rodgers trying to bring in Sigurdsson mean he doesn’t see Gerrard playing as the most attacking of the 3 midfielders? Maybe he will play alongside Lucas or as a right sided forward?

I think it shows that if Gerrard gets injured we have no one else that can fill in for him. BR probably wants back up

First goal Stevie G scored for LFC. Highlights the gulf of difference between the quality of the youth that we buy and this lad.

It will be interesting to see if Rodgers has the balls not to play Gerrard as one of the “two controlling midfielders”. He was awful their today and we almost always look a poorer side when he is asked to play in that position. Has to play as the more attacking of the three in midfield or as a wide forward.

He was definitely out of sorts with the simplest of play being fu'cked up
Maybe it just takes longer nowadays for him to get into his stride?

to be fair to the lad he has only played 30 mins of football since the Euros.  Its still preseason and the oppostion, no matter how poor we think they are, are 13 games into their season at the moment.  This was never going to be a walk in the park for anyone, especially those players that have only been back intraining for a week
Our job is simple, to support the club, not just parts of the club that are easy to support, but every one who plays a part, that includes ALL players.  We are stronger when we are all walking in the same direction. Walk On

I don't know what's happened to the Stevie G who used to win us games late on in games, the chap who'd never get his head down and just keep playing ridiculously well.

Stevie G hasn't lost his game as much as he has lost his mental strength IMO. I'm really disappointed, we really need him to be a leader now more than ever.

i've said it before he's a great player but not a great captain. he was awful today.

oh and he shouldn't be playing in midfield. put him in the front three in downing's place.
