united and chelsea can spend that sort of money on 5 PLAYERS.

I have no complaints really about how much he has spent and think on the whole he has made very good signings. My only real complaint is that he has never solved the problems that were apparent when he arrived. Namely the left and right sides of the team.

When he arrived he declared that his first priority was to solve the right side problem, 4 years later we still have problems with the right side, exacerbated by the fact that we have had problems with the left side for almost as long due to Kewells injuries.

Josemi, Kromkamp, Zenden, Gonzales, Pennant, Leto, Voronin even Garcia and Babel never quite managed to fill the positions to the standard we need.

To be fair 2 Rafa though if it werent 4 the board & namely Parry diverein we probally would have had Alves 4 around 6mill yrs ago, Simao if wed raised r price by a couple of mill  & Mancini (ditto) now

I can see why Rafa complained 2 Hicks i would 2 hes useless

Rubbish s@int, Benitez had right mid sorted until he let Nunez go

In all seriousness, it is a bit beyond the joke how we haven't sorted the wings out yet.  I don't think Babel is ever a wide midfielder, but in this 4-2-3-1 where the wide forwards don't have so much defensive responsibilities I think Babel could be good enough with a bit more experience and if he can be a bit more consistent.  We certainly could do with adding one real top quality winger this summer though.

The more I think about it the more I think we should take a punt on Joaquin.  I think he'd be priced more reasonably these days and getting out of Spain could give him a new lease of life - the media always seem to be on his back over there.  He's got pace, he's got quality and he's direct, I can see the Premiership suiting him.  The problem with him has always been end product though which is my only reservation.

Benitez inherited the following team (roughly):

Jerzy Dudek
Paul Harrison
Chris Kirkland
Patrice Luzi
Markus Babbel
Igor Biscan
Stephen Warnock
Jamie Carragher
Steve Finnan
Stephane Henchoz
Sami Hyypia
Jon Otsemobor
John Arne Riise
Djimi Traore
Gregory Vignal
Bruno Cheyrou
Salif Diao
Steven Gerrard
Alou Diarra
Dietmar Hamann
Harry Kewell
Anthony Le Tallec
Danny Murphy
Richie Partridge
Darren Potter
Vladimir Smicer
John Welsh
Milan Baros
El Hadji Diouf
Neil Mellor
Michael Owen
Florent S Pongolle Striker
Djibril Cisse

From the initial sales he recouped about 11 million getting rid of three players in the squad plus 6 million from Heskey sold prior to him ariving and he spent about 23 million once you take off sales.

Assuming we stick to the 1 or 2 quality players a season rule people are obsessed about I wonder how people would have done things differently, especially when only 7 of that team remain and a few were out of contract.

PS: This isn't an excuse for a certain few to start throwing in ridiculous names and suggestions we should have signed instead.

Benitez' signings for the wings...Nunez, Garcia, Zenden, Gonzalez, Pennant, Babel, Anderson, Leto, Benayoun. 9 wingers Benitez has brought in and he still hasn't found a proper world class winger.

Judging on other transfers in other positions, it's obvious he spots talent, so why he can't find and play a decent winger is beyond me. Hopefully next year we'll see Paul Anderson given a run in the side.

 I had forgotten about Nunez John.

I think Joaquin would probably be around £8/10million now, and would be a bargain at the price. My only concern would be about his attitude, as he doesn't always look as if he is fired up to do his best. When on form he seems to beat defenders for fun and looks almost unstoppable.

I haven't seen much of him in the last year or so but would certainly have him on my list of possibles.

Agree with st mike , chelsea are the largest culprits , 30 million on a 30 year old striker , silly money and he was a flop but do they mind?

I read today that they are interested in sergio ramos and a 50 million bid has been sent to madrid and they also want riberey

Stats that matter :-

Money spent : millions
League titles : zero
Never buy from PC World, product quality is poor and their 'customer service' is even poorer
