Money spent on players in current first team squad: £112,900,000

When he arrived he declared that his first priority was to solve the right side problem, 4 years later we still have problems with the right side, exacerbated by the fact that we have had problems with the left side for almost as long due to Kewells injuries.
Josemi, Kromkamp, Zenden, Gonzales, Pennant, Leto, Voronin even Garcia and Babel never quite managed to fill the positions to the standard we need.

Rubbish s@int, Benitez had right mid sorted until he let Nunez go![]()
In all seriousness, it is a bit beyond the joke how we haven't sorted the wings out yet. I don't think Babel is ever a wide midfielder, but in this 4-2-3-1 where the wide forwards don't have so much defensive responsibilities I think Babel could be good enough with a bit more experience and if he can be a bit more consistent. We certainly could do with adding one real top quality winger this summer though.
The more I think about it the more I think we should take a punt on Joaquin. I think he'd be priced more reasonably these days and getting out of Spain could give him a new lease of life - the media always seem to be on his back over there. He's got pace, he's got quality and he's direct, I can see the Premiership suiting him. The problem with him has always been end product though which is my only reservation.

Benitez' signings for the wings...Nunez, Garcia, Zenden, Gonzalez, Pennant, Babel, Anderson, Leto, Benayoun. 9 wingers Benitez has brought in and he still hasn't found a proper world class winger.
Judging on other transfers in other positions, it's obvious he spots talent, so why he can't find and play a decent winger is beyond me. Hopefully next year we'll see Paul Anderson given a run in the side.
