Aiming high is good but realistic is important for target setting as well. If the target is too far-fetch, he may take lots of risk to speed up progress so that he may have slight chance to make it. However shd it fail. All is lost and we will be going backwards. With the new style of play we are expected to play under BR, i say our current crop of players will need alot of adapting to do.

I say Reina, Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Enrique, Lucas, Henderson, Gerrard, Borini out atking left, Downing atking right & Suarez up top.

hard to say how much pressure he'll be under to be honest. If he can spend this season implementing a style and show signs of progress then i think the majority of the fans will be happy to give him time as the squad develops.

Exactly... I'm not going to come out and say I think we should be aiming for 4th or even 5th or 6th. I just want to see us playing a better brand of football on a consistent basis. If we can do that then the results will follow in time. I just hope Rodgers get's what he needs in terms of financial backing in order to implement that style.

Henry didn't set CL qualification as the goal for BR. It all shows he is a reasonable guy. Why? BR will not have another 120 million to spend on players he'd like to bring in but Kenny did last year. If as an owner you gave your manager 120 million, of course you'd expect much more than with limited funds that BR has now.  We are now a club that has to sell in order to spend. IMO BR will be given a 1 year probation on this job and I am sure by next summer (if he hasn't been fired), Henry will demand CL football from him.

I'm wondering where Downing fits in with Rogers.  I suppose he could work well in his system.  I know I'm one of the 7 total Liverpool supporters left that still believe Downing could play a big role at Liverpool, but for some reason I still feel like he will be  a player for us.  Even after last season I just never completed doubted his ability.  I saw a lot of times in a lot of games where I felt he was playing really well, and that he was judged off of his stats too much.  Obviously there were games where he just wasn't doing anything for us, but every player has those games.  I don't know why I've just got some strange random faith in him.

I guess we'll see next season where Downing fits in and what he can do.  At this point I feel he'll be a consistent starter since we've lost a couple players who can play out wide, and have only brought in Borini.  Even if we were to sign another attacking winger, he could play in any of the 4 wide positions in a 4-3-3, as could Downing.

Sorry buddy I am not one of those 7 people. Having watched Downing for a full season I am fully convinced he will never do the job he has been asked to do. Not 1! assist in the league all season, I can't remember anyone scoring from one of his crosses. His most critical stat's go almost blank last season. Think a player trade might be on the cards in the future...

I think he wanted to take some pressure of Rodgers by saying CL football qualification isnt a target. Everyone connected to the club will be expecting it.

Dossiers and the like are all well and good but on the evidence of yesterday against Tottenham BR has a long way to go to turn this squad into a creative free flowing team capable of matching the best.

We are dealing with a young manager who has some great ideas but is unproven at the top of the game. it's not just what we see in pre-season, the entire season will be a footballing experiment. To suggest that there are expectations of us finishing in the CL spot this year, is quite simply setting yourself up for disappointment even before the season has begun.

Players who have been used to a different style of football of their life cannot suddenly adapt to a short-passing game within a period of months. A number of them, as we will find out this season, aren't cut out for that type of football.

The owners know this, it's just really down to the fans to accept that if BRs gamble pays off, it will be a case of 1 step back first and then 2 steps forwards.

rodgers deserves a knighthood if he gets us top 4. you have to assume united, city and chelsea will take three of the spots because of the squads they have. arsenal, spurs, newcastle will all be strong. first and foremost i expect our results to improve greatly, especially at home where we were wasteful beyond belief last season.

it'll be interesting to see how we approach the europa league games the further we go in the competition. i expect a mix and match early on but the further we progress i shall be interested to see if we put all our eggs in one basket by concentrating on the league or really go for the europa aswell.

top 4 would be some achievement in his first season especially with that squad as it stands.
if he gets them ticking and builds the confidence of a few certain players then i see no reason why we couldnt at least push for 4th till the wire.we could do with losing a few and if we lost 3 more and replaced them with 3 better players then who knows what he could do with them.he could very well surprise us all.he needs to be shrewd like pardew and sign players who turn heads in their 1st season with the club.
our home form and results have to improve and its unnaceptable that bottom clubs are coming to anfield and taking points where they should be getting nothing.that has to be nipped in the bud this year.
players want medals and for rodgers to be a success in the game then he needs trophys but hes is in a situation where the owners want top 4 and not cups so id reckon he'l make the league form his priority and if a second string side can progress to a semi final then he'l go out to win it but ultimately priority will lie with the league.
it will be interesting to see whether spurs look to exit stage left as soon as possible or genuinely be interested in winning it also.

Brendan Rodgers awaits snowball transfer effect for Liverpool FC

“I ANTICIPATE it may take one or two moves to spark everything off.” As Brendan Rodgers spoke these words from the bowels of the Central Stadium, perhaps he had Alberto Aquilani’s impending move to Fiorentina in mind.

Perhaps not.

But as the Italian finally broke away from his ill-fated spell at Liverpool he could be the catalyst for new arrivals into Anfield that the manager requires.

Rodgers continues to work hard in his pursuit of Swansea’s Joe Allen and other, as of yet, unidentified targets.

True to form, the Ulsterman chatted freely of how he intends to bolster the Reds for the new Premier League season and how exploring the European loan markets is central to his plans.

“There is nothing imminent just yet, not that I am aware of, but hopefully things will progress over the next couple of days,” Rodgers said in the wake of Liverpool’s win over FC Gomel in the Europa League on Thursday night.

“I want players in sooner rather than later, it is important to get the group together as quickly as possible, but if not we will just have to be patient.

“I’d be happy as long as we have some in before the end of August.

“I have also looked at one or two loan deals from abroad.

“There are some quality players in that market that I have enquired about and spoken to the European managers on. “The make-up of the group will change before the season starts and that will change the dynamic of the team also.”

Aside from Stewart Downing’s wonderful winning goal, there was little to excite in Belarus on the night when Rodgers took charge of his first competitive game.

Though admitting Liverpool are still some way off where he wants them, Rodgers found reasons for cheer in the low key performance.

The display of Jamie Carragher on 700th appearance for the club was chief amongst them.

“It was a terrific game for us,” said Rodgers.

“They are 15 games into their season so physically, they are in a good moment.

“The atmosphere was terrific and hopefully the two 90 minutes in this tie will prove very worthwhile for us because we had people in competitive state on Thursday night.

“I was proud of the players because a lot of them haven’t had much game time.

And playing in that heat as well. It was very, very warm out there.

“We can’t be fluid and dynamic in every game we play and you have to be able to win in different ways. We won the game and showed glimpses of real quality.

“It was a case of finding those players who were physically capable of playing the 90 minutes. you’ve got to manage a nurture through these players.

“Look at Jamie Carragher. 700 games, 34 years of age and he played like it was his first game. I thought he was incredible as was his game management.

“To play that many games as a professional is incredible but to do it at a club of this stature, tells you everything you need to know about the man.

“The players were probably a little bit tired towards the end and we couldn’t quite get the intensity we’ll want them to but that will come over time. And that will only improve so it was a real pleasing night.”

I suppose a lot depends on the quality of these proposed loan signings ,its no secret Rodgers has a lot of contacts
in the Spanish game ,so lets just wait and see which players he has earmarked for the reds new dawn .

B Rod says we are broke.

Rodgers open to big Agger bids
Brendan Rodgers has warned Manchester City they will have to dig deep if they want to prise Daniel Agger away from Liverpool
.

The Premier League champions have been heavily linked with Agger as Roberto Mancini grows increasingly impatient at the lack of new faces this summer.

City rate the Denmark defender in the £18million bracket.

However, Rodgers, whilst admitting he does not want to lose Agger, acknowledges that everyone is for sale if the price is right.

And in Agger's case, that price will be big.

"Every player has a price and top centre-halves are at a premium," said Rodgers.

"Thiago Silva has left AC Milan for PSG for £40million.

"He (Agger) is one of the leading players in European football, so it is going to be a big valuation.

"Is he a player I want to lose? No. He understands how I want to work and can play a real pivotal part in how I want to play.

"But I am a realist. If someone comes in with a massive bid and it is in the best interests of the club, whether it is Daniel or any other player, you have to look at it."

Rodgers' words merely underline the brutal reality of life at Liverpool.

The club are heading towards a third successive season outside the Champions League, a tournament they won as recently as 2005.

And owner John Henry has made it clear he simply will not fund the kind of massive signings splashed out on during Kenny Dalglish's ill-fated 18 months in charge.

"The reality is we don't have the money that was here," he said.

"I don't have a bucket load of money to go and get in a load of players.

"We have to be strategic."

Rodgers confirmed talks with Cardiff are on-going over Craig Bellamy, who wishes to move back to south Wales for the final stages of his career.

"I would think he would be leaving," said the Liverpool boss.

Somewhat more confusing is the status of Andy Carroll, who has been the subject of interest from West Ham but is only keen on returning to former club Newcastle.

"Between now and the end of the window there are going to be players feeling a little bit unsure and insecure," said Rodgers.

"There is a new manager and more players to come in.

"But Andy has been terrific. He knows exactly where he stands.

"I understand Andy wants to play games but he has to fight for their position. There are not many clubs you could go to and be a guaranteed starter.

"The point is when that transfer window shuts everyone has to be totally focussed about being here.

"There can be no regrets about not going if you had the chance to on loan or not."

Thus far, Rodgers has been unable to strengthen and refused to confirm the status of his obvious interest in Swansea midfielder Joe Allen.

It is all rather unsettling ahead of tomorrow night's Europa League return with Belarus outfit FC Gomel.

Liverpool head into the Anfield encounter a goal ahead, which at least means that the Northern Irishman should be able to enjoy his first home game in charge.

"Anfield is so inspiring," he said.

"You see the flags and scarves and there is so much tradition and heritage at the place.

"That is the draw. That is why I came here.

"It is a club that can really go forward.

"There will be no prouder man than myself tomorrow night."

erm....well.......yeah.

if he has to sell his best players to raise funds to strengthen the squad then he doesnt stand a chance, how is he expected to compete with the ferguson`s, wenger`s and mancini`s with one hand tied behind his back.
